I really do love this photo series. My personal favorites are Seth Rogen in North by Northwest and Emile Hirsch and James McAvoy in Strangers on a Train. Those two both look great with the new actors and are just well-shot scenes as is. Hopefully Vanity Fair puts out some more awesome photo sets like this again in the near future.

The latest issue of Vanity Fair includes a set of photo spreads featuring today’s Hollywood actors recreating classic Hitchcock scenes in an article titled The 2008 Hollywood Portfolio: Hitchcock Classics. These photos are as good as anything Annie Leibovitz has photographed, which is amazing to say, and are quite a cool set to browse through. Everyone from Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow to Naomi Watts to Emile Hirsch and James McAvoy to Scarlett Johansson and Javier Bardem are featured in this set. Whether you love Hitchcock or whether you love A-list actors, you need to check these out. It’s rare that we feature anything like this, but these are just too cool to pass up.

Thanks to the ohnotheydidnt blog for scanning the photos and to SlashFilm for showing us the way. For full-size versions, pick up a copy of the March issue of Vanity Fair on newsstands now. Otherwise, enjoy the photos below!

The Seth Rogen picture seems odd – hard to imagine him in that role. The rest are good.

Explore Hitchcock’s obsession with eyes in this supercut

Alfred Hitchcock is most often remembered for his use of suspense, his cameos, and his icy blonde female leads, but a new video offers up another Hitchcockian trope: eyes. Visual essayist Kogonada—who often highlights directors’ stylistic choices—illuminates Hitchcock’s fascination in a new video for The Criterion Collection.

Titled “The Eyes Of Hitchcock,” the video pulls examples from Psycho, The Birds, Vertigo, North By Northwest, and plenty of other Hitchcock classics. In film after film Hitchcock frames medium close up shots so that his actors’ eyes are near the center of the frame and look directly into the camera, thus drawing the audience into the mindset of the character.

There’s an almost comedic energy to Kogonada’s video because of the way it repeats short shots on a loop. But given that Hitchcock’s films often blurred humor and horror, that feels like an appropriate technique with which to celebrate him.

Sony has now officially pulled The Interview out of theaters. Its ridiculous that they caved in because of a threat. How is it standing by your filmmakers when you are giving in to some threat and cancelling the screening?

“In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film The Interview, we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release. We respect and understand our partners’ decision and, of course, completely share their paramount interest in the safety of employees and theater-goers.

Sony Pictures has been the victim of an unprecedented criminal assault against our employees, our customers, and our business. Those who attacked us stole our intellectual property, private emails, and sensitive and proprietary material, and sought to destroy our spirit and our morale – all apparently to thwart the release of a movie they did not like. We are deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie, and in the process do damage to our company, our employees, and the American public. We stand by our filmmakers and their right to free expression and are extremely disappointed by this outcome.”

This is a cowardly act .NK makes ridiculous threats all the time . They are not to be taken seriously . And even if it is you can’t surrender to terrorists .Next time another group will find another movie offensive . I would understand if it was a serious movie .Its a Seth rogen comedy for God’s sake . We all know it is stupid .

          Like a Boss .
“The level of corporate cowardice here astonishes me. It’s a good thing these guys weren’t around when Charlie Chaplin made THE GREAT DICTATOR. If Kim Jong-Un scares them, Adolf Hitler would have had them s**tting in their smallclothes.”

Agree. Even Obama blamed Sony for cancelling the release.

“We cannot have a society in which some dictator someplace can start imposing censorship here in the United States,” Obama said. “If somebody’s able to intimidate folks out of releasing a satirical movie, imagine what they start doing when they see a documentary they don’t like, or news reports they don’t like. Or even worse, imagine if producers and distributors and others start engaging in self-censorship because they don’t want to offend the sensibilities of someone whose sensibilities probably need to be offended.”
