Contagion Review by Sputnik

When Beth Emhoff (Gwyneth Paltrow) returns to Minneapolis from business in Hong Kong, what she thought was jet lag takes a virulent turn. Two days later, she’s dead in the ER and the doctors tell her shocked and grieving husband (Matt Damon) they have no idea why. Soon more cases are reported as the virus begins to spread. Researchers mobilize to break the code of this unique biological pathogen as it continues to mutate. Deputy Director Cheever (Laurence Fishburne) tries to allay the growing panic despite his own personal concerns, and must send a brave young doctor (Kate Winslet) into harm’s way. As the death toll escalates and people struggle to protect themselves and their loved ones in a society breaking down, one activist blogger (Jude Law) claims the public isn’t getting the truth about what’s really going on, and sets off an epidemic of paranoia and fear as infectious as the virus itself.

Some scenes are so spine chilling like the scene where Beth dies or the scene where Mitch returns home to find his stepson dead or the scene where Dr. Mears finds out she is infected too. With the prevalent Coronavirus many scenes seem so topical and realistic. Conspiracy theorist Alan making money of the virus is similar to people who have profited by selling Sanitizers and masks during present crisis. The best scene of the movie is the final scene which shows how the virus originated.

Matt Damon is good as Mitch. Gwyneth Paltrow is good as Beth in a small role. Jude Law is very good as the conspiracy theorist Alan Krumwiede. Kate Winslet is very good as Dr. Mears, an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer. Jennifer Ehle is very good as Dr. Hextall, a research scientist with the CDC. Laurence Fishburne is good as Dr. Cheever. Marion Cotillard is good as Dr. Leonora, an epidemiologist with the World Health Organization. Bryan Cranston is good as Rear Admiral Lyle, United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.

Background score by Cliff Martinez is excellent. Steven Soderbergh’s direction is very good. Contagion is so topical with the prevailing Coronavirus. Contagion is excellent and is a must watch for everyone right now.
