Hi, tanqeed members. Although I have been visiting tanqeed for almost 2 years now, this is my first post. I have a habit of making best and worst lists at the end of every year on my blog, and would like to post my 2013 list as my first post on tanqeed. Looking forward to some interesting discussions. 🙂
As 2014 begins, it is time to list out what appealed to me most and what repelled me in 2013.
Movies I absolutely loved…
Kai Po Che – Delightfully heartbreaking tale of friendship and ambitions stymied by fate!
Raanjhanaa – Wonderfully realistic and irrational love story that ends as tragically as it begins
Raam Leela – A brash, colorful take on the bard’s eternal love story accentuated by spirited performances
Madras Cafe – A hard-hitting docu-drama that takes sides but reveals enough while doing so
Lootera – A slow, yet impactful retelling of O. Henry’s Last Leaf with melodious music and beautiful frames
Movies that were flawed but watchable…
Special 26 – A trying-to-be-smart film, which has its monents but which goes a tad too far in trying to swindle the viewers, not to mention the damage done by unnecessary songs and a tame romantic angle
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag – An at-times gripping biographical with unnecessary songs and bravado scenes to live out the fantasy of Milkha Singh
B. A. Pass – Faithful translation of Railway Aunty that focuses more on the lurid and less on the emotions
Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns – Interesting story brought down by the hammy Mahie Gill and the underwhelming climax
Aurangzeb – Interesting take on Don and The Devil’s Double that is a little stretched and often underwhelming
Bombay Talkies – A couple of fantastic stories (Star, Murabba) marred by a couple of cheesy ones (Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh, Sheila Ki Jawaani)
Movies I thought were overrated…
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – A coming of age film that focuses too much on long legs and pretty visuals and delves very little into the subject matter
The Lunchbox – A pretentious and boring film with some good moments
Shuddh Desi Romance – Unrelatable yawn-fest, where you lose track of who wants what as quickly as the characters in the film
Ghanchakkar – Too underwhelming for its own good
Movies I hated…
Grand Masti – Unfunny, boring and lame
Zanjeer – Ghastly!
Chennai Express – Squanders some interesting ideas to deliver a stereotypical unfunny comedy with a hammy SRK in every frame
The Attacks of 26/11 – Terrible attempt at homage to the dastardly acts, punctuated with irritating background music, pathetic camera angles and deliberately bad acting
Chashme Baddoor – Bad remake of a really funny film, even Dibyendu Sharma couldnt save this one
Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara – Yawn-inducing soporific film about clowns who happen to be gangsters
And now for the awards….

Skimmed through it. Will comment in detail later.
Thanks Sputnik. Looking forward to your comment.
Good post shan. Agree with first two category but the third category of yours will also fall in first category of mine, movies I liked.
Best actor should go to Rajkumar Yadav for Shahid & Supporting should go to Zeeshan for Ranjhana.
Best actress is Off course Deepika for CR/YJHD/Ramleela & supporting actress should go to swara Bhaskar for Ranjhanna.
Best song – Sun raha haina tu
Best Singer male – Amit Trivedi for Ghanchakkar babu or Arjit for Tum hi ho.
Best singer female – Sona Mohapatra for Ambrasiya
Best Director – either lootera or Madras cafe
Thanks FS. Unfortunately, havent seen Shahid yet, so cannot comment.
Zeeshan was fantastic in Raanjhanaa but I feel he did not have enough footage and as a resultant, could not make enough impact to get the nod ahead of Rajkumar Yadav. Same with Swara Bhaskar.
Music category is an open field this year with so many fantastic songs! It is hard to pick only one 🙂
Best director is a tough race too, but I feel Abhishek Kapoor did really well to convert the very filmy Chetan Bhagat book into a very likeable and gripping film. That has as much to do with the script as with direction. Then again, to each his own. 🙂

Thanks for sharing, Ritz. Agree with most, except Dhoom 3. Although I didn’t hate it like most people here, I found it to be very average (at times even below average) and not worthy of any nominations.
I don’t have list of movies but only one as best of year can only be one.
Ranjhanaa.
Lately not seen such terrific jugalbandi or sometimes triplebandi in any movies as displayed here by Dhanush – Zeeshan ( Terrific) – Swara Bhaskar and thn icing on cake was wonderful wonderful dialogues…
distant second will be S26.
Tried to watch both YJHD and KPC. couldn’t complete both, later was very mediocre novel by CB and movie didn’t engage me. Tried my best.
Completely agree on Raanjhanaa, Tulmul. It is almost a masterpiece. Loved it when I watched it first, loved it even more on the second watch. The triplebandi is just awesome! Dhanush brings in a lot to the table and I feel without him, this film wouldn’t have been so effective. Of course, the direction is good too, but Dhanush elevates the film to a different level altogether.
Good choices .
