TV presenter causes outrage after posing with lion she killed

An American television presenter has prompted outrage by boasting online that she had killed a lion in South Africa

Melissa Bachman after her “Incredible day in South Africa” Photo: TWITTER

Melissa Bachman, a keen hunter who makes programmes on the American outdoors, posted a photograph on Facebook and Twitter of her holding a rifle and smiling beside the corpse of a male lion.

“Incredible day in South Africa,” the self-styled “hardcore huntress” said of her pursuits at the Maroi Conservancy, adding: “Stalked inside 60-yards on this beautiful male lion … what a hunt!”

A furious online reaction led Bachman to deactivate her Facebook and Twitter pages within hours. It also prompted an online petition asking the South African government to bar her from returning.

Bachman has posted many pictures on her Twitter feed of animals she has killed (TWITTER)

“She is an absolute contradiction to the culture of conservation this country prides itself on,” said Elan Burman of Cape Town, the author of the petition, which quickly gathered 3,000 signatures.

“You, lady, are what is wrong with the world,” said Richard Robinson of Maryland, who was among the signatories. “Take with no consequences. Shoot, kill, consume, destroy.

“You didn’t kill a lion, you stood behind a machine and pulled a little trigger, you pathetic, sad excuse of a human.”

While the African lion is rated “vulnerable” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List, it is not officially an endangered species. “The main threats to lions are indiscriminate killing,” said the organisation.

The photograph was in keeping with Ms Bachman’s past activities. Her official website displays pictures of her posing beside dead alligators, turkeys and bears among other quarry.

She was axed as a contestant on the National Geographic programme Ultimate Survival Alaska last year after 13,000 people signed a petition protesting against the inclusion of a “heartless trophy hunter”. Ms Bachman could not be contacted for comment on Friday.

Ricky Gervais, the British comedian, shared Ms Bachman’s comment “what a hunt!” on his own Twitter feed, adding: “Spot the typo”.

I am not at all interested in weather BJP or Congress or AAP wins next election. What is needed is leader like Indira Gandhi for the wild life preservation – absolutely blunt and determined. What she did in 60s is exemplary. We have wild life only because of her in India.
Even like Sonia or Maneka. With Sonia we had interconnecting parks with Ranthabore – an essential bloodline for forrests and tigers. Sonia had major hand in approving it. And Maneka is a legend – all know.

No matter how much one curses Congress, or its corruption. What Indira/Sonia/Maneka or Jawaharlal did for India in terms of wildlife preservation or Technology (respectively) could not have been done by anyone else. Period !!

Salman, Poachers or these villager(s) – If law treats everyone equal, then these villagers are as guilty as Poachers or Salman.

Ignorance of law is not an excuse, Salman did for his pleasure, poachers do it for earning money, these villagers did it for some other reasons (poors basically, but still crime is same).

Very very sad by this incident. Strict action must be taken.

    HOw ill-informed are our courts:

A division bench of the court had then seconded the opinion of Dr. Asad Rehmani, director, Bombay Natural History Society and a member of the standing committee of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL), that there is no valid reason why lions shouldn’t be introduced into Kuno. The bench was of the view that both the tiger and the lion can co-exist without affecting the other.

What the court failed to take note of at that time was the possibility of lions using the shared corridor to enter Ranthambore. Dr Divyabhanusinh Chavda, another member of the standing committee, however, did insist upon creating a second home for the lions.

This is info abt NBWL. If this is not going to change – i.e. Prime Minister being the chair person; then I dont think Lions in Kuno will stop. (given the lack of knowledge and close association of Gir/asiatic lions with our current PM).

And that will be very bad for Tigers as well as Lions.

“Composition of NBWL The National Board for Wildlife is chaired by India’s Prime Minister. Minister of Environment is its Vice-chairman.

Maharashtra PCCF and MLA Kore trying to keep the poor Sunder in capitivity. Look at how media is reporting that the Mandir and Bhakts will oppose Sunder’s move. (for those who are not aware of the issue search “#freesunder on twitter)

In short, let me explain as many ppl will not be able to understand marathi.

Sunder, an elephant which is donated by an MLA Mr Kore in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra – to a temple called Jyotiba. The elephant is in captivity and has severe injuries due to the fact that he was tied in such a way that he was not even able to sleep properly on ground. PETA raised this issue in 2007 based on some bhakt’s complaints (bhakt’s of jyotiba) – and the fight has been going on since then. Then PETA approached court, now even Keralite vets and forrest officials have checked the elephant and they say his mental condition and wound is very bad.

SC has ruled that Sunder be moved in rehabilitation center by 15th June.

There have been efforts to put / attract him in a truck which will transport him to Bangalore rehabilitation center (Bannerghatta national park)
The Mandir ppls (Jyotiba) and ABP reporters are telling that Sunder does not want to move to a new place. Whereas the fact is (as stated by PETA) the animal is scared by loud crowd and the Mahut (caretaker).

ABP news is continuosly showing that how bhakts and people will be affected and how Sunder himself does not want to go and showing clips of him eating Prasad from bhakts like Tomatoes, Bananas and concluding the news like – “when the elephant is enjoying here, why pressurise him to move to a different location?”

I am totally pissed off by this. If forrest officials in Maharashtra also think (PCCF) that this is true and Kerala Forrest officials dont know what they are doing; then its a pity.

Its nothing but game being played by some ppl in blind faith in the name of God / Temple !!
