Chennai Express derails two Pakistani films
India Today Online August 7, 2013 | UPDATED 17:47 IST

There is much hype around Shah Rukh’s Chennai Express that is the solo-festive-release this Eid. We know that no one in B-town wanted to compete with King Khan by releasing any film but even in Pakistan two films’ release have been postponed due to Chennai Express.
According to reports, the makers of Pakistani films Main Hoon Shahid Afridi and Waar have delayed the release date in order to avoid clash with Chennai Express which is all set to release in Pakistan on Eid after an import ban on release of any Indian film on the festival was overruled.
The writer of the film has reportedly admitted that the tough competition from Chennai Express is a reason for the delay.
Chennai Express was suppose to release a week after Eid in Pakistan. Directed by Rohit Shetty, the film also stars Deepika Padukone.

Chennai Express Chases Ek Tha Tiger, Ra.One and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
    Thursday 8th August 2012 10.00 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

The first three days at the box office decide the fate of all big films today and the release date of Chennai Express has fell perfectly for the film to have the possibility of creating a record for each of the first three days.
Ek Tha Tiger holds the day one record with 30.75 crore nett, Ra.One has the best second day at 22.75 crore nett and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani tops on day three with 22.50 crore nett.
The last two opening day record holders Agneepath and Ek Tha Tiger have all opened on a major holiday before Friday and faced a major 50% fall the next day but this will not be the case with Chennai Express as it has Saturday as day two which is also a major holiday in parts of India.
If Chennai Express even matches the records for the first three days it would mean an unbelievable 76 crore nett total and if we had potential of paid previews the figure goes over 80 crore nett. The three day record at the moment is 62 crore of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and it will be a surprise if this record is still standing after this weekend.

Bollywood review: Deepika Padukone outshines SRK in ‘Chennai Express’
Rohit Shetty’s s(h)tyle of romance relies heavily on buffoonery and will be applauded mainly by Shah Rukh Khan loyalists
    By Sneha May Francis
    Published Thursday, August 08, 2013

A scene from the film ‘Chennai Express’.
Boarding ‘Chennai Express’ comes with its own set of challenges.
Firstly, it’s tough to overlook a filmmaker’s real intentions, despite a disclaimer about not intending to mock a community, when his jokes are entirely focused on just one region.
Secondly, he unapologetically relies on Bollywood stereotypes, where South Indians speak in a twang that’s over-the-top and completely incomprehensible even to South Indians.
Thirdly, director Rohit Shetty is unable to differentiate between neighbouring South Indian states Kerala and Tamil Nadu. In one song, he plugs the dance forms of one state even when it isn’t pitched there.
Fourthly, there’s a famous track on the ‘lungi’ dance, even when none of the characters ever dress in one. Instead, they wear the traditional ‘mundu’ (a white sarong that’s respectable men’s attire).
But, logic isn’t something that we’d associate with this breed of comedies, but, despite these obvious slip-ups, Rohit Shetty’s ‘Chennai Express’ manages to chug along.
K Subash’s story starts when forty-something Rahul, who finally sets out to live his life, abruptly bumps into pretty Meenamma.
She’s from the South, born into a highly influential criminal family, while he’s from the North, born into a rich family that feeds off a sweets business.
Their unplanned train journey forcefully ends at her notorious hometown.
What begins then is a madcap adventure as he tries to escape from the clutches of the gangsters, and she from a marriage she doesn’t approve.
Rohit plays to the gallery and lifts many iconic Bollywood situations and invests immensely in buffoonery. He’s even got writers Farhad and Sajid pen numerous inane one-liners that mock his and Shah Rukh Khan’s earlier movies.
The method isn’t novel, but is definitely chuckle-worthy. At least, some of it is.
But Rohit’s uneasiness is evident when he’s forced to restrict his trademark action thrills to a few scenes, and focus on the funnier escapades instead.
He even changes tracks mid-way, hoping to ride on SRK’s famed romantic image, and prompts him to crinkle his nose, flaunt his dimples and directs much attention to his legendary gaze, but with so much madness going around it’s tough to take anything serious.
That said, it’s Deepika Padukone, who manages to overshadow SRK with her incredible beauty, cute dimples and a consistently over-the-top accent.
Despite being given a character that could easily turn into a caricature, she manages glamour and comedy well. That’s an incredible feat considering she’s just a few films old.
That said, Rohit obviously gives Shah Rukh immense attention, allowing him to display his vintage antics, and spread his arms in his trademark style at many occasions. Evidently these are crowd-pullers, so SRK loyalists won’t be disappointed.
It’s notable how Rohit even allots space for Tamil dialogues that are spoken with just as much earnestness as Hindi. That’s surely a first in a Bollywood frame.
In fact, Rahul would be Rohit’s first hero who doesn’t possess superhero powers, and instead cowers when instigated to fight.
It’s endearing at times, but the jokes are repeated so often that they lose shine.
Rohit’s carnival-like comedy coaxes some laughs, but can leave you exhausted. Make no mistake, ‘Chennai Express’ is fun, but the kind that Rohit endorses.

The review that Boxofficecapsule posted, their critic rating is 7/10 and business rating 9/10.

    Chennai Express movie review

Star- Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Sathyaraj, Nikitin Dheer; Director- Rohit Shetty; Music- Vishal & Shekhar
The comedy along with the action is rarely served with equal entertainment in today’s cinema. We discern Rohit Shetty for his mass leisure which includes cars fluttering from the unknown corners and comedy which isn’t slapstick but works.
What is amusing here is how Shetty keeps these two triumphing facets at the forth and submerges it with Southern touch along with SRK’s trademark romance in ‘Chennai Express’. Though for some it might sound a mix and mash of numerous odd ingredients which might produce a sour recipe in the end. But here is where Rohit excels in. He carries the intriguing premises with responsibility without exploiting or hurtling any regional sentiments.
He brings out the regional diction out of Deepika (who chews the words and deliver it with finesse) so brilliantly that one might mistake her as South actress, though we know that she will be star opposite Rajinikanth soon.
Rohit Shettyy has shot Kerela beautifully. He allows his cameraman to zoom into the attractive hilly locales like Meeshapulimala, Devikulam Lake, Kannimala and Wagavara. Letting the intoxicating beauty prevail, Rohit wastes no extra duration to bring forth his business of combat which shifts the focus from the blooming romance of Deepika-SRK to the initial avenge.
It begins when Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) a well educated man from North India is on a vacation. He boards in Chennai Express by mistake where he meets Meena ( Deepika Padukone) a south Indian girl whose father is a well known don. Some goons kill the ticket checker of the train whose sole witnesses are Rahul and Meena.
Meena takes Rahul to her city until the matter calms down. The duo fall in love and decide to run away to marry each other. How they get out of the murder drama and deal with situations is what the story revolves around.
With an army of heavy assailants and a big queue of sedans, the screen never looks light-weighted. With characters like Durgeshwara, a don in Tamil Nadu (played by Sathyaraj) and Tangaballi (Nikiteen Dheer) the battle looks one-sided but Shah Rukh’s tricks (action resembling Karan-Arjun) balances it all.
If we consider SRK’s performance he is back as a charming Rahul who is a romantic feat action hero. His screen presence is delightful which none could replace. He tickles your funny bone, makes you emotional at times and when it comes to action he doesn’t exploits but takes the punch and delivers the same with full strength.
Deepika playing his lady love after ‘Om Shanti Om’ is surprisingly amusing. Her Southern dialect sounds cute and she looks innocent and beautiful.
The veteran star Sathyaraj leaves a desired effect with his villainous act and this would surely bring him more glory. The muscular Nikitin Dheer is good.
Music by Vishal-Shekhar is great. However, before its release the music wasn’t the high point of the flick but there is some vitality which you can’t ignore and would love to watch the songs on Youtube. Kashmir se Kanya Kumari and Tera Rasta tracks are my favourites.

Chennai Express all set to create new record for Paid Previews
By Joginder Tuteja, August 08, 2013 – 11:41 hrs IST

While one waits to see if the Rs. 202 crore total of Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots would be threatened by Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express, it is pretty much expected in the trade that at least one record held by Ace Khan is set to be broken. This evening UTV is all set to bring the Rohit Shetty directed affair on a record number of prints, hence giving it the hugest Paid Preview release ever in the history of Bollywood.
This also means that 3 Idiots record of approx Rs. 2.5 crore, which it had earned a night before its full-fledged release, is all set to be broken.
“While typically Paid Previews arrive at 3 or 4 shows on a Thursday night, it is at least triple or more for Chennai Express. It is a huge exception that has been made since Shah Rukh Khan is looking at making the best use of the platform that is available for it. All major multiplex chains are screening 10-12 shows from Thursday evening itself and a huge inflow of moolah is expected,” confirms a source.
While 3 Idiots stays on to be a record holder, recently Bhaag Milkha Bhaag too made a heady kick-start by accumulating more than Rs. 1 crore in Paid Previews. Prior to it some of the other notable films that have managed to strike a fortune a night before official release are Ghajini, Singh Is Kinng, Rock On and last year’s Jism 2. Incidentally, the film that started it all was Shah Rukh’s Don which had seen a modest, yet notable, Paid Preview release for itself.
Now the least that Chennai Express is expected to gather on Thursday is Rs. 5 crores, which would be double of what 3 Idiots had scored. However, few in the trade are pegging the number to be much higher.
“It makes sense though for him to arrive big this Thursday since Friday is a Eid holiday,” comments leading distributor Girish Johar, “For families it becomes all the more easy to plan for a Thursday night show as they don’t have to worry about Friday being a working day. Chennai Express is following a right strategy to make good amount of money from Thursday itself.”
Given the fact that majority of footfalls are anyways from evening onwards for any regular release, the fact that the party begins earlier for Shah Rukh Khan makes a statement around his confidence in the product.
“Of course there is always fear of something like this backfiring,” comments an exhibitor on the condition of anonymity, “If a film is rejected on Thursday itself, especially in the world of social networking where audience is the biggest critic today, it is tough for a film to stand back on its feet. This had happened with Kites which was marred by poor word of mouth before its full fledged release. However, considering the fact that Shah Rukh has been in the business for long, he must have taken a well calculated risk here.”
However, the general mood in the industry is jubilant, what with talks of many records in the offering.
“I won’t comment on which film’s record would be broken but I can confidently say that Chennai Express is going to create many records for sure, starting with Paid Previews,” says Girish Wankhade, Head Marketing, Cinemax and PVR (West), in a tongue-in-cheek tone.
“We are glad to screen 10-12 shows on Thursday itself for two reasons. First and foremost the buzz is very high and it makes sense to capitalize on that. Secondly, there is no other blockbuster in the running that can’t be moved. If we have slots available and we can bring a much awaited film like Chennai Express on Thursday evening itself, why won’t we do that”, he adds, “From Friday onwards there would be an average of 20 shows at all our major properties.”

CHENNAI EXPRESS REVIEW by Martin Kuruvila
August 8, 2013 · by Editor · in Movie Review

    chennaiexpress

Are you ready to get on the Chennai Express this weekend?

Get ready to meet Rahul and Meena in the very same place. Rahul (naam toh suna hoga) is none other than the superstar Shahrukh Khan and Meena Lochni is played by Deepika Padukone. The lucky pair is back after 2007 blockbuster Om Shanti Om.
Rahul is a North Indian boy in the film, who plans for a Goa trip with friends, to become Naughty at 40, accidentally boards the Chennai Express and there he ends up meeting Meena, who is a South Indian girl. This accident by Rahul happens to make him reach his actual destination which is nothing but love. The movie is based on a 40-year-old bachelor Rahul, who lands up in a totally unexpected and hilarious journey that makes him realise the importance of love, life relationships and sacrifice.
Riding on Rohit Shetty-created Chennai Express, the Bollywood Badshah made to woo his fans with the potboiler, which is opening in both multiplexes and single-screens on the home turf. This is one of the biggest releases of 2013 with over 3,500 screens in the country, 700 screens abroad.
It looks like SRK movies are only getting bigger. Chennai Express is said to be the first movie to be released on such a large scale in overseas market. Although Shahrukh khan brings back Rahul in this movie, it’s a different Rahul here.
The movie is produced by SRK’s Red Chillies Entertainments and UTV Motion Pictures, under a budget of 90 crore and expecting a minimum business of 135 crore. Rahul is a North Indian bachelor who stays with his grandparents in Mumbai. Rahul couldn’t get married to anyone because of his over-loving and over possessive Grandfather who cannot live without him.
Rahul accidentally boards a train that not only takes him to his destination, but also makes him realise the power of true love. Meena, played by Deepika Padukone is very fondly referred to as Meenamma by her loved ones. She is a South Indian lady who stays in Komban village with her huge family. She lost her mother when she was a child and want to run away from this village to get rid of the bad guy Tangaballi.
Mr. Dugeshwara, played by Sathyaraj is a very well-known don in Komban village. He is Meenamma’s father and is very protective about her. He plays a good role with the presence throughout the movie. Tangaballi, played by Nikitin Dheer is a don of another village. Meenamma’s father is very fond of him.
Chennai Express is a hard-core commercial film with a perfect blend of romance, comedy, action and family emotions.
The movie is an Eid celebration entertainer. Rahul plays a good role looking young and energetic, praising Tamil a lot hence the movie is surely to be a hit amongst Chennai masses. Deepika too looks superb as usual matching up to SRK.
Priyamani’s dance adds to the colour element and the movie is an Eid package with excellent dance numbers, good music, brilliant camera work and perfect editing.

Verdict: A perfect Eid package for the full family.

The Rohit Shetty film’s first half does not impress our film critic
Our critic Deboshree Ghosh who is watching Rohit Shetty’s Chennai Express right now in the theatre says the film is unbearable. Coming from a Shahrukh Khan fan, we just couldn’t believe her. According to her, the script has let the film down. Deepika Padukone is good with her Tamil accent, though.

Read what our reviewer texted us, “Chennai Express awful, Shahrukh is overacting to the core. Deepika does a good job with her Tamil twang…it (the film) is unbearable. The script is super shoddy.”

Chennai Express Paid Previews Draw Bumper Response At Multiplexes
    Thursday 8th August 2013 20.00 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Chennai Express paid previews drew a bumper response at multiplexes as shows started at around 6pm. The results were always likely to be excellent as the next day is a national holiday and teh evening shows before a major holidays tend to record good collections.
The film will easily set a record for paid previews simply due to the fact that no film has had a such a major release in paid previews. The film has 10-12 shows at multiplexes. There is also paid previews at single screens with 1 or 2 shows but the response is less there as it is not the norm at single screens.
The top paid preview collections till date are as follows and Chennai Express will be top by leaps and bounds.

    1. Three Idiots – 2.75 crore
    2. Kites – 1.75 crore
    3. Ghajini – 1.65 crore
    4. Jism 2 – 1.40 crore
    5. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag – 1 crore

Chennai Express Creates Its 1st Record At The Box Office | Paid Preview Report
    by Koimoi.com Team

Chennai Express as expected made its first record at the domestic box office. Collecting whooping 6.75 crores from its paid previews i.e. on Thursday, the film has kick started with an overwhelming income. Chennai Express, starring superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, has already began with a stellar business with its preview shows.
Shah Rukh Khan in Chennai Express Movie Stills

Shah Rukh Khan in Chennai Express Movie Stills

The film has beaten the previous records of 3 Idiots which held the best fare amongst the films with paid previews. 3 Idiots on its preview day made an earning of 2.75 crores which was so far the best collection record by any film on its preview day. The film has already beaten the flocks of those with good preview day box office numbers which also includes films like Kites that earned 1.75 crores, Aamir Khan’s Ghajini which raked up 1.65 crores, Jism 2 that made 1.40 crores and more recently Farhan Akhtar’s wonder film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag which made 1.05 crores at the box office.

Chennai Express can easily be expected to swish past older trends of the box office and create its own space. Rohit Shetty and King Khan’s deadly combo doesn’t falter!

Chennai Express Sets A New Record In UK Box Office | Paid Preview Overseas Report
    by Koimoi.com Team

Chennai Express began its overseas box office run on a good note as the film did great business in popular global circuits. Being a Shah Rukh Khan film, whose fans cover a larger part of both hemispheres, the film received a brilliant response on its Thursday previews.

In Australia, the film earned Australian $ 38,315 and in New Zealand the film made NZ$ 8,058 which is magnanimous given only selected Bollywood films fare so well at their box office!
Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in Chennai Express Movie Stills

Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in Chennai Express Movie Stills

In U.K, the film has set new record, which is another SRK stronghold region. The film on its preview day earned £ 142,220 which beats the opening day records of his previous Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, Aamir Khan starrer 3 Idiots and Salman Khan starrer Ek Tha Tiger in the circuit.

As per early estimates, this Rohit Shetty directorial made a business of over 3 crores in U.A.E.

However, the data from the crucial circuit U.S.A is still being compiled but going by the collections in other important circuits, trade expectations are immensely high!
