Boldest Scenes in Hindi Cinema

First things first : When I talk about the boldest scenes in Cinema, I am not going to post nude and rape scenes. 😉 These scenes can disturb/shock a person but cant shake him from within. The most sensitive aspect that touches a person instantly is their religion and films that question the beliefs held by them are the ones that ruffle their feathers the most.

1) Lajja is one of the lesser talked about films in Santoshi’s career. He is a director known for giving strong roles to his heroes but it is rather ironical that his Lajja, a strong woman oriented film is never talked about on forums which probably is the boldest film he has made to date. Check this scene from Lajja, a Ramayan play in which Madhuri questions the attitude and ego of Rama towards Sita during Agni Pariksha. The arguments/dialogues are really bold and is a point to pander about. I was not surprised when I could not find a good quality video of this scene. Not many will have the stomach to debate on this topic.

I never liked what supposedly Ram did during this incident. It was very sexist and cheap to ask Sita to do an Agni Pariksha just because Raavan kidnapped her and took to Lanka. Somewhere our tradition of suppressing women comes from this incident where always a woman has to prove herself but never the man. And even after she passed the fire successfully, she is abandoned by Ram when she is pregnant citing the reason that he is not sure whose kids they are. This is the worst thing a husband can say to his wife.

Somehow I don’t feel this is a true incident. I think its manipulated by male chauvinistic writers over the years and they have concocted this entire episode .

2) OMG Oh My God Climax:

Its another powerful film not talked about at all on forums, inspite of my repeated efforts to engage a conversation probably due to its extremely strong content. The boldest Hindi film ever made. Questions a lot of beliefs and superstitions and is sure to make many uncomfortable. Paresh breaks idols and daan-petis and Akshay as Lord Krishna smiles and approves the act. When was the last time you saw such a scene in a Hindi film?

I was surprised how it even worked so well at the BO? When was a last time someone called a religious place as “dukaan” and people had no issues! Its also a good sign that atleast some people have matured. It gives me special pride that a Hindu star and a Hindu director made this film, hats off to them.

3) Khuda Kay Liye:

This scene exposes all the fake mullahs out there. “dadhi mien deen nahi, deen mein daadhi hai” dialogue is epic. Naseer’s arguments are brilliant. He questioned lot of beliefs among Muslims from the way they dress to the rights of women. I am sure it makes many hardcore fanatics uncomfortable and those who manipulate Islamic laws to suit their agenda.

4) Suhaag Intro scene of Akshay

When was the last time an established lead actor had the audacity to make an introduction in mere speedos and danced like there’s no tommorrow? He also does the Ninjutsu cat leap over the sofa not even worrying what if the towel would come off. Very bold even by today’s modern standards.

Ok the last one is a joke, so take it easy 😉

Finally, happy diwali to all members/visitors on TQ. Don’t light crackers and cause noise and air pollution. Light diyas and share sweets 😀

Good topic Baba..I like your choices too.. However, I am surprised you missed one more scene from Lajja.

There’s a candid conversation between Madhuri and Manisha, where Madhuri asks Manisha to take a piss on the street…and then goes on to say, that when Men can do it, so why can’t we…Its a fun scene but I liked the audacity and courage of Madhuri’s character.. in that one scene.

    Ramlila scene is good too.

completely agree with you on the OMG Oh My God scene..one of the boldest films ever made in India

Here’s my pick..the scene that came to my mind the moment I read the topic and its content…there are about 100 more scenes in this movie..that redefine boldness.

The two boldest movies in India ever made– Bandit Queen and Matrubhoomi.

    • Baba 10 years ago

bandit queen is bold even for today. i love that film and the gang rape scene in it was very disturbing.not seen matrubhoomi.

agree with you on the candid convo of madhrui and manisha over pissing, it was a great realistic conversation that two such characters would have had. the story involving mahima is also very good. it is about dowry.

regarding OMG, real credit goes to you . if not for your 10/10 review, i would have never been curious to watch this film. I never expected such a film from the promos

    • Baba 10 years ago

the matrubhoomi scene is very good. will try to see ful film

    • Anjanpur685Miles 10 years ago

Saw this Matrubhumi scene just now.

John Galt – yes its very bold – the initial scene when he kills the baby girl.

But later on “khaneme goo” etc and the item song made me think its OTT type of film to the core. Not realistic. I think its a general problem with Bollywood films.
(Regional films in some regions like Kerala, Marathi, Bengal are far more realistic on social issues.)

Excellent post Baba and very good choice of scenes.

You had me thinking on what the 4th scene would be. Good one LOL

  3. Tulmul Memender 10 years ago

Not seen anyone of those movies save OMG and I am yet to see Boldness in OMG

Have someone here seen 1st unedited version of RTGM ???? That movie had real bold scenes along with Bandit Queen ( Theme itself was bold)

    Nice Post Baba 🙂

Boldness is always Context driven and relative So some real bold scenes in old movies seem normal to us now and same will happen to present scenes…

Even RK another movie starring padmini and rishi had bold scene on widow marriage among rajputs and that was also edited …

    • sputnik 10 years ago

Yes RTGM had some bold scenes and dialogues. There is a scene where Mandakini asks for some water to drink before she can breast feed but the woman refuses saying its Ganga Jal. There were some dialogues about Ganga and purity in the climax which were very bold from what I remember. But unfortunately the movie became titillating and is remembered more for the nudity.

Have not seen Prem Rog but remember watching a scene on TV where a widowed Padmini is being forcibly taken to be tonsured.

    • sputnik 10 years ago

Found the scene from Prem Rog. Watch from 5 min 21 sec.

      • Anjanpur685Miles 10 years ago

        @Tulmul and Sputnik

The above scene tries to be bold but then Mr Kapoor succumbs to the demand and the widow has to shave off her hair.

I would say Mangal Pandey scene of Toby Stephens was more bold than this where Britishers opposed the “Sati pratha “.

It was a real good part of the film and it made film very balanced historically.

It was very bold and remarkable for the director (and also for the audience who perceives that britishes did all wrong etc) to show that – Remarkable because ..even if its based on Mangal Pandey – it showed this good side of Britishers and what they taught us through Ram Mohan Roy …

        • Anjanpur685Miles 10 years ago

Oh yes Tulmul, I realize that you mentioned that it was “edited” in Prem Rog.

        • sputnik 10 years ago

Prithviraj Kapoor gives up but then Tanuja who is from her in-laws family comes and stops it saying she is our daughter-in-law now. So it is still progressive.

Have not watched the movie but there is another scene where Prithviraj Kapoor had a widow get remarried. Watch from 1:54

Can you tell me the exact time for that sati pratha stopping scene.

    Good Post.

@baba, go to Khuda Ke Liye video URL and see comments there .. these comments prove that mindset is not easy task to change .. 🙂

    • Baba 10 years ago

thanks yakuza 😀 well ppl dont change their mindset on the fav star or fav films , how will they change it on religion? but then a pakistani thought of making KKL . so hope is there.

  6. saurbh 10 years ago

    @john galt
i hv seen matrubhumi nd was quite amazed by the script nd shocked to see some scenes. Saw some 3-4 years ago so forgot many scenes, but one i remember was guy f***ing a cow after watching porn.

Agree on bandit queen too. I love the way how shekher Kapur maintain reality too, as i m frm same area which the movie shows. It was disturbing to see child sex scene.

omg is really a bold movie. Though (nt in the same manner as subject of this post), guide also shaken my belief or rather change my belief. Imo guide bd omg are two good movies by which u can understand religion more nd in best way.
still dnt know y omg ws nt even properly nominated in various awards. Loved Mithun acting in that, it ws perfect for me.

agree on khuda kay liye, the court room dialogue says it all, i loved the way naseer’s dialogue were not filmy rather perfectly religious nd true. Ws very informative to me.

dnt agree on ramayan’s scene. I hv read ramayan. Actually teaching was ram was following his duty as king, nd ramayan is all about how king should be. He always knew sita was pure, but he has to do because people of kingdom may doubt. So he did agnerpariksha, nd after hearing washer man’s comment he expelled sita, because a king’s duty is to listen to his people nd that’s all Ramayana about. People misunderstood it without reading, ad they misunderstood religion, caste system nd santoshi falls to same category.
abt lazza’s bo it was lengthy nd boring too. I didn’t like it at all. Though agree strong women character movie generally dnt work.
    good post baba.

    • Baba 10 years ago

“he has to do because people of kingdom may doubt”

the Lord / king makes the rules/ethics for society or its subjects? why didnt he do an agnee parishka himself? after all he was also alone for that time period without sita .who is he/public to question sita’s character? what is the guarantee that he is clean? just bcos he is a man/king?

  7. saurbh 10 years ago

U r now also misunderstanding my comment nd ramayna. He Ws nt hving any doubt on sita first thing, it was people only.
ND he Ws nt alone/ with some female/with someone people didn’t know. so people had no doubt. moreover people generally doubt female character first. So he didn’t do any agneepariksha.
    He knew sita was pure.
He did all the things so people would hv no doubt abt sita.

he made every rule for its people. A king’s duty is towards its kingdom not towards its family. If people doubt then philosophy is he should do everything to clear people’s doubt.
ND pardon me but people can doubt anything they want. When u hav doubt on Ramayana then people (at that time)can have doubt on sita.
its not about male rather its abt king’s duty.
moreover writer want us to think about this male thing. He could hv easily shown ram is going against people, but he didn’t do it. Rather he shows wat a king should do nd by showing sita’s pain he tried to change normal people’s perspective towards women.

but if u doubt ram character or Ramayana itself like why he didn’t do agnepariksha or why he expelled sita then may be its Lil deeper nd may spritual reading or guru may clear doubts. Or a reading of ramayna itself.
in childhood i also had doubt like killing of Bali nd sita thing, but cleared after reading things.

moreover i cnt discuss this thing after this.

    • Baba 10 years ago

shame on such ppl who doubt the female’s character but not the man and shame on the king who is so paralysed by the pathetic laws of the society that he ironically rules.no justification can be given for that incident

  8. Shalu Dhyani 10 years ago

Very well written. I love the Lajja and KKL scenes. OMG had many hardhitting scenes and my personal pick would be the courtroom scenes where Paresh Rawal takes all the religious leaders to task.

  9. Anajanpur685Miles 10 years ago

    Great post Baba.

Tum aage badho ..hum tumhare saath hai 😉

    • Baba 10 years ago

thanks ritz .pls share some bold scenes in films that you have come across. and also your views on agni pariksha if possible 😀

  10. Reddemon 10 years ago

A scene from ‘Hindustani’ where Kamal Hassan kills his own son because he was corrupt. I knw many films had this ‘sacrifce of family member’ angle but this one had a lot of impact on me.

    • Baba 10 years ago

i think mother india might be the first hindi film where a parent kills its child

  11. Anajanpur685Miles 10 years ago

@Baba, I perfectly agree on what you said about Agni Pariksha and Ram.

I will share my views on other films in coming days …

  12. cr7 10 years ago

    Great post Baba .

  13. Anjanpur685Miles 10 years ago

    @Baba,

About your post – I love the Khuda Ke Liye scene and I have all the lines by-hearted 🙂 .. It holds special place for me.

About OMG – well, it was very good movie. But I have seen lot lot better in regional languages which are way more bolder in the same genre and which are very realistic and way less filmy than OMG was.
