Tanqeed Movies yes i remember it very well .. madhuri was in real terms superstar .. aaj ki superstar actress are nothing ( kat n Kareena) .. beta , raja , HAHK … madhuri walked away with all applause .. though when we talk abt movies we used to talk abt yaar uss hero ki movie aisi thi but yeh 3 movies especially were dominated by Madhuri so much that ppl used to speak abt madhuri more than hero while discussing movie .. Its a truth that many wont belive but sachchai yehi hai

  2. Shalu Dhyani 11 years ago

This is actually true. Madhuri used to eat up her co-stars in any film that she had a strong role in. Ironically, she got overshadowed by Karishma in DTPH! The brightest hour of Karishma’s career it was.

    • Baba 11 years ago

madhuri looked out of place in dtph. she was finding it hard to look fit and young like karishma and matching steps in western dance.her awkwardness was showing in her acting.

I wouldn’t say she got overshadowed in acting. Karisma was bad acting wise. But Madhuri did look fat and those skin tight costumes made her look worse. Karisma looked better.

I think Madhuri was pissed off with all the talk of being overshadowed by Karisma though. When she won the Filmfare for Best Actress she made some comment like this should close all talk of getting overshadowed.

I clearly remember at least for Nagina, Mr. India, Chalbaaz, Beta, Hum Apke Hain Kaun and Raja … where Shri devi and Madhuri left much more impact than their respective heroes. Though HAHK and Raja was Madhuri’s biggest and last stroke .. by then she was entering to her 30’s which is retirement age of an actress.

Well never knew that she was considered for Ishq .. though being Indra Kumar movie, it was obvious. And very true .. she was pairing with likes of new comers or relatively lesser stars post HAHK … Raja, Mohabbat, Mritydand, Mohabbat, Wajood, Arzoo.

btw which movie she did with Aditya Pancholi ??

    • Author
      sputnik 11 years ago

There may be some truth in this story about top heroes refusing to do movies with Madhuri. SRK did do Koyla, DTPH and Devdas later with her. Anil did Rajkumar and Pukar with her after HAHK so don’t think Anil was scared of getting overshadowed by her – I think both Anil and Madhuri were excellent in Pukar.

Sailaab was 1990. So may be the Aditya Pancholi movie did no take off.

  4. yakuza 11 years ago

Got it .. It was Sailaab.

  5. Bored 11 years ago

Only co-star that Madhuri completely ate up was salman khan in HAHK, no other star faced such embarrassment.
HAHK made such a pussy out of Salman that he had to resort to steroids for self confidence.
It took 15 yrs before India could accept his ‘mardangi’ again with Wanted.

    • Baba 11 years ago

actually salman was overshadowed in sajan too as the article says. he was reduced to second lead by sanjay dutt. much like shashi kapoor in amitabh starrers.Mostly due to salman himself. he was a little too casual in his approach to all his roles. he acted like a”supporting ” actor in those films 😉

  6. Kabir 11 years ago

Don’t agree with your views, it was madhuri who was new to the combo of already successful rajshree and salman combination. and HAHK was primarily love story of Prem and Nisha where Salman Khan was there from right first shot to the end. and as far as madhuri’s dominance is concerned it applied to every film she was doing at that time as mentioned in the above article.

  7. Kabir 11 years ago

P.S HAHK was the ONLY ATBB madhuri gave in her WHOLE CAREER. Thanks to Salman Khan and Rajshree.

  8. Anjanpur685Miles 11 years ago

I am not aware if madhuri made such talk in awards …but Karishma was really very pathetic in that film – very irritating as much as SRK level.
Ofcouse madhuri was not at her best in that film though.

  9. Anjanpur685Miles 11 years ago

……And for that I hold Mr Yash Chopra responsible …..he made his heroines look like paper clones….and madhuri tried to fit into that (due to pressure from industry) but somehow didn’t fit because of her Strong personality.

    • Baba 11 years ago

fully agreed, I think madhuri was too strong a woman to fit into the yash chopra world of cheesy heriones. She was very awkward in dtph. Katrina Kaif is no madhuri but even she was looking ill fit in JTHJ in that kiddish role. She had no clue what to do

  10. yakuza 11 years ago

DTPH plus points were chartbuster songs, choreography and cinematography. Rest all departments from story to acting movie was disappointing .. I remember I was in hostel and was so disappointed to read its review on Sunday TOI .. TOI gave 2.5 to it.

  11. yakuza 11 years ago

you forget Rakhi in Kabhi Kabhi ?

  12. Anjanpur685Miles 11 years ago

For me most strong point was music in DTPH…and in that esp lyrics…

    Rest all was lame….

  13. ank_16n 11 years ago

Agree MADHURI Overshadowed every of her’s co-actors in movies like HAHK,DIL,Anjaam,PremGrabth,Hum Tumhare hai sanam..!!

All were only Madhuri movies her Acting Style, the way she connects with Audience through her performance was , is and will be just Awesome…!!

Updated the post with Salman Khan interview about Saajan and HAHK. LOL on the Gaytime Ad.

  16. Dhamaka 11 years ago

well on topic … i dont buy this theory that madhuri over shadowed amir in DIL or salman in HAHK or srk in ANJAM. All stories were balance in favor of both and they gave satisfactory performance . if one has to discuss about her dominance over heroes then discuss her films like prem partigya, yaarana, dil tera ashiq and raja etc.

but we dont discuss those movies just because they were not huge grossers instead we normally discuss her huge grossers just to take away credit from heroes of these respective films.
another thing ppl usually say on these online forums that she over shadowed sanjay and salman in Sajan but as far as i remember sanju was the only one who gained alot from that movie. infact the momentum he got from sajan continued till khal nayak

After HAHK the public and media perception was that it was a Madhuri film and that she stole the show. I would know since I saw the movie thrice in theater.

Lot of Salman fans who were not old enough during the 90s don’t want to accept this as it takes away credit from Salman for his biggest blockbuster. The other little fact is that Salman did not have a single hit since Saajan in 1991 to HAHK in 1994. Every movie of his that released between these two movies was a flop.

Sanjay got the maximum credit for Saajan’s success followed by Madhuri. Raja did well solely on Madhuri’s star power. Anjaam was anyways a woman oriented movie. Have not heard Madhuri getting sole credit for Tezaab or Khal Naayak.

Even for Maine Pyar Kiya Bhagyashree walked away with all the credit. Here is Salman’s Interview where he says that Bhagyashree walked away with all the credit and he had no movies for 6 months. He says his father had to call GP Sippy and he announced a movie with Salman and then people came to sign him. Thanks to Shetty for this.

After HAHK the public and media perception was that it was a Madhuri film and that she stole the show. I would know since I saw the movie thrice in theater.

Media was anyways against Salman that time because of his rash attitude. i saw this movie in muscat and still not understand the greatness of this movie being a action movie lover it was a yawn worthy experience for me.

I was around 18 when HAHK released 🙂 and was not a salman fan at that time and still i am not that fond of his acting but like his style and mannerism.yes you are right many salman fans are not ready to accept it but to me he was fine in that film to me he got totally side lined in dil tera ashiq and this has nothing to do with box office. yes i remember that was the worst phase of his career and he was giving film like jagruti’s and nischay.

about sanjay yes he was on all time high after sajan …..

unfortunately i am not able to open this link because of ban on you tube here in pak.
This is really surprizing for me that bhagiasree walked away with all the credit where as here that movie was well received only because of its theme

The movie did well because it appealed to the women folk with the whole Madhuri Renuka sisters thing and the sacrifice and all. I know lot of men hated HAHK because it had no action scenes. Some called it a wedding cassette.

I have not seen Dil Tera Aashiq. My friend who was a Salman Khan who used to watch all Salman movies. He came back from DTA and said he liked it and it will be a hit but it was not.

How credible these articles are? Same question will be asked after 10 years…Posting old articles out of magzines is nothing different from posting new articles from new magzines. if you have watched the movie with your friends and family then you would know how reliable the article is. Its opinion of few people and same goes with feedback of few people around you. There is no point in posting these articles in order to prove something that cannot be proved at all.

I believe Hema Malini to be the first female superstar and not Madhuri Dixit. Hema Malini’s success rate is fabulous and she also held her own in all films she did.

Madhuri IMO used to copy Madhubala a lot in terms of looks and expressions and she was mainly popular for her dhak dhak type dancing in masaledaar songs. Even in a family film like HAHK her most popular song has her shaking her behind and showing off her back to the camera.

I don’t think she used to overshadow all her co stars except for a film or two like HAHK and Dil. Likes of Tezaab, Khalnayak belong more to the heroes than her!

She was a total misfit in DTPH and looked old and jaded. She was nothing extraordinary in Devdas. Koyla and Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam are trash films anyway. I think Manisha Koirala and even Rekha were more effective than her in Lajja.

She’s given some memorable films and more memorable songs (for obvious reasons! 😉 ) but I find her overrated.

    • Anjanpur685Miles 11 years ago

Ankur, you can criticize Madhuri in any way but please dont compare and insult by comparing to fat duck called Madhubala who had no grace whatsoever.

    • Baba 11 years ago

i dont think too highly of hema malini a below avg actress who doesnt stand anywhere close to madhuri. in terms of looks, i prefer the classy parveen babi and zeenat aman anyday. If you dont believe me, watch the dance duel in burning train featuring them both.hema looked like an aunty. also dont agree on manisha in lajja. she was the weakest part of the film with some really bland acting.

  21. Anjanpur685Miles 11 years ago

Yes Baba – Parveen Babi and Zeenat are most underestimated ladies in film discussions. They were classy and had terrific grace in moves / dance / the way they carried themselves in those western clothes.

  22. Anjanpur685Miles 11 years ago

Hema was the first ‘plastic face’ of Indian dancing heroines. No expressions on face ..just a plain blank smiling face and doing bharatnatyam /classical dance moves – missing the very essence of the dance.

Updated the post with one more scan of Salman’s Interview where he talks about how Bhagyashree got all the credit for MPK and how he had to sit at home for six months. He says that media was good but its the public and the film Industry which thought he couldn’t act well. He also says that Baaghi and Pathar Ke Phool did not do well.

    • Baba 11 years ago

salman is saying the truth there but one has to be really dumb to say all this on record. Its one thing to be honest and aware of yourself and another thing to be so stupid. He probably had a low self esteem and never saw himself becoming big. That explains his casual approach to those roles.

      • ank_16n 11 years ago

Baba u are somewhat right during 2000-2009 when SALMAN career was almost finished due to Un-countable Flops…
he maybe had realised that HAHK,MPK and HSSH were more of Monish behl,Madhuri or Bhagayashree movies….

That’s why during Dabangg Promotions(which was a make or break situation for Salman’s Career) he even asked people to watch his movies if they don’t want him to RETIRE…!!

  26. yakuza 11 years ago

And yes .. Glad to see mention of Shahenshah VHS record sale .. I remember it was released in 2 VHS, probably first and last time for any movie. Both VHS have tons of ads .. and its rental was like 80/- for 3 hours in initial few weeks … when ticket prices were merely Rs 4/- Even before movie finish, guy waited on door to pick the copy ..

  27. Kabir 11 years ago

Lol here on some people trying to put films like mpk or Hahk as heroine overshadowed films. It was only Salman Khan who had made the character of Prem iconic. Whenever these films are talked about its mainly for salman khan the prem character he played. Moroever these scans can’t be said authentic as it can be easily edited or can be made out anyways salman khan has been always like this humble and gentleman in his interviews. its just ridiculous some people here trying desperately to steal credit from him. 😀

No matter how some slimeballs try fact is and will remain both HAHK and MPK are Salman khan’s Solo ATBB’s. Through both films he had made the character of prem iconic and one of the most memorable characters in the history of bollywood. 😀

Maine pyar kia in 100 best films of all times filmfare

    [img][/img]

    Maine Pyar Kia

Maine pyar kia was single handedly responsible for the video cassete boom in india. Every school or college going girl in indian metros had a VHS copy of Maine pyar kia. And the Single reason was Salman Khan. There was something about Salman’s prem that made him the guy every girl wanted to take home for various reasons.

    Salman Khan: Bollywood’s resident Prem

Debut film: Biwi Ho To Aisi (1988)

The journey begins: Salman’s first leading role was in Sooraj Barjatya’s blockbuster Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) as Prem became the boy every girl wanted to meet. Later, he went on to act in films like Baaghi (1990), Patthar Ke Phool (1991), Kurbaan (1991), Love (1991) and Sanam Bewafa (1991).

Turning point: Salman’s return as Prem, again in a Barjatya film, saw Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994) become a blockbuster hit. He went on to work in multi-starrers like Karan Arjun (1995), Jeet (1996) and Auzaar (1997). In 1999, he was again cast as Prem in Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1997). Next, Salman went into action and comedy with films like No Entry (2005), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), Partner (2007, again as Prem), Wanted (2009), Dabangg (2010), Bodyguard (2011) and Ready (2011).

Comeback: Sooraj Barjatya’s Bade Bhaiya in which he will play Prem yet again.

good to know you subscribe to the opinion of filmfare,I am sure you also admire their choices for best actor over the years .srk has won 9 times , salman – 0 😉

      • ank_16n 11 years ago

        hahaha…..

        Don’t dare u say that….. 😆

  29. Kabir 11 years ago

Obviously the character which he is allowed to repeat in SO MANY films in his whole career (and just not repeat ) each one of them being successful in a way with 100% success rate most of them huge successes infact solo ATBB’s BIGGEST HIT OF THE WHOLE DECADES only indicates how much loved and popular prem is made by salman and during MPK and HAHK .families nationwide specially girls and aunties were enamoured by him in every household. Whether his jacket or caps/clothes he wore in MPK/HAHK or dialogues or songs everything related to prem became popular making it the biggest hit of the whole decade so much so that prem became synonym with rajshree films it was the character of prem mainly around which rajshree film revolved without salman one cant imagine any of these rajshree films. no wonder salman went on to carry forward his image of character prem in his so many other films which again became higly successful without making the character iconic with biggest of blockbusters (MPK/HAHK) of indian cinema it would not have been possible. 😀

Prem for salman is what vijay was for amitabh.

    • Baba 11 years ago

“Prem for salman is what vijay was for amitabh.”

and what jadoo was for that creepy alien in KMG 😆

  30. Kabir 11 years ago

Lol i have also posted one hindustan times link related to salman and prem that doesn’t mean i will subscribe to everything they post. 😀

Its not about filmfare or hindustan times particularly (there are many other links which i could have posted) i was just stating how its ridiculous of some people trying to steal credit from salman for his solo ATBB’s films like mpk and hahk which essentially became huge hits because of the lead character prem he played around which these films mainly revolved.

all these Rajshree films were combo of director sooraj and salman as prem. actresses didn’t mattered they were uncommon link for all films. it was combination of salman-sooraj who gave such biggest hitsino wonder for both madhuri and bhagyashree it was the only atbb they had in their career. 😀

Its like saying karisma overshadowed srk in dtph for Dil to pagal hai (yrf-srk) or katrina overshadowed akshay in namstely london (vipul shah akshay) or kareena overshadowed ajay in g3 (ajay- rohit shetty) 😀

  31. Kabir 11 years ago

and as far as filmfare awards are concerned everyone knows in last decade or so how much they have degraded with all other new indian film awards

but when they had some value way back in 1989 only film awards at that time Salman Khan had won BEST DEBUT ACTOR award 1989 for MPK and in the same year for female actor it was Juhi chawla for Qyamat se qyamat tak. 😀

else Salman khan has always been like this too humble always praising and giving credit to others. 😀

    • ank_16n 11 years ago

Qyamat se qyamat tak released in 1988
      while MPK released in 1989…

Bhagyashree won best Actress award for MPK …!!!

  32. yakuza 11 years ago

YES .. Prem is iconic character .. made by Prem Chopra, so much so that people stopped naming their kids as “Prem” .. And no other Prem in history of Bollywood able to change this mindset till date.

      hahahaha…..

prem naam hai mera prem chopra…..
what an Dialogue…….true PREM was iconic only bcoz of this..!! 🙂

  36. I.One 11 years ago

Well, since I have been watching and understanding movies, came across the following actors whom I consider female superstars – Sri Devi, Madhuri Dikshit, Kajol ….. Vidya Balan!

Rest, who got credit more than whom are all relative concepts and cannot be objective, but the perception counts and perception says Madhuri was the biggest highlight of HAHK.

  37. Reddemon 11 years ago

The main reason for HAHK being a monstrous HIT is its marketing imo. This film is the example of smartest marketing for me.
First releasing the full movie, forcing cinema owners to upgrade their theatres, making the movie short by 45mins and than adding it again.

    • I.One 11 years ago

I disagree. The movie was not marketed better than any other movie and its opening was not great either. It was a decent one. It was supposed to be a family drama and which it delivered. But the whole wedding coverage and its songs just blew the audience, both family as well as youth. It was only after few days that cinemas started to have a houseful boards. The WOM was just amazing and the additional scenes were included due to heavy public response. . I still remember how we school kids decided to have a watch together as a group. Went with parents 2nd time and 3rd time again with few relatives. The WOM for a genuine family entertainer and blockbuster songs made it one of the biggest hit.

      • Suprabh 11 years ago

Agreed. It was only after a few days that it picked up big..It was probably my very first movie in a theater and I remember watching it with my family in its second week in a late night show that was added because of its popularity , The show started at 10:30 or something and some people sat on the steps inside the theater because of housefull crowd.

      • Author
        sputnik 11 years ago

I think the marketing was very different from what was common practice then. Movies used to show full songs before release on TV but I think HAHK had a 30 second or 1 min teaser of Didi Tera Devar Deewana.

Movies used to release in 21/25 theaters in the first week at my place and it released in only one theater – the best theater in the city and they did not expand the release even after months. It still played in only theater. Later they had a morning show in another part of the city.

I think it opened well from first week itself and it was very hard to get tickets because it was playing at only one theater. Back then movies used to have good print video cassettes out by Tue/Wed of next week but there was no such case with HAHK. A bad print video cassette came out after a few weeks and it did not have the full movie. So the families had no choice but to go to the theater to watch it.

Movies used to play 4 shows and the timings were odd with the 3 hr 40 min duration so they cut it to 3 hr in the second week or so. They added the 40 min much later – pretty much at the end of the release.

Yes WOM was great and it attracted the women and families most.

More than any anything the big deal was the confidence that Sooraj had in his product. If the movie had not done well he would have lost all or most of the money since it released it on very few prints.

      • hithere 11 years ago

Even in Kanpur they released it only in one cinema hall which was renovated. Typically they use to release a bigger movie in 2 or 3 cinema halls (not suggesting that it was not marketed).

      • Reddemon 11 years ago

Sputnik has put my views aptly.

Not taking any credit from the movie, But WOm could have taken the movie to 50-55cr. Movie collected extra 15cr due to its unique marketing and sort of Rerun.

  38. Serenzy 11 years ago

    70cr in 1994.
    Amazing Blockbuster!

    .

I am one of those ‘unlucky’ few who has Not seen HAHK in theatres.
But I have rewatched it(and many times in parts) like 15-20 times now.

The ‘Epitome’ of all movies in the family drama genre.
One of the Best’s in Indian Cinema for me! 😀

    • Baba 11 years ago

“I am one of those ‘unlucky’ few who has Not seen HAHK in theatres”

you have company serenzy.and when i finally saw the film on tv, didnt think it was worth the hype. that goes to show marketing played a part in the gross. somehow the makers positioned it as a must-see in theatres as sputnik explained.

  39. rajesh 11 years ago

Well, there was a huge craze for the movie though I was not able to understand why, I didnt find the movie that great. I belong to a small town and there was no cinema hall at that time, my parents and many other relatives went to a wedding in a bigger town and they took time from busy schedule of wedding to watch this movie.

  40. yakuza 11 years ago

HAHK was huge craze .. released in Aug, 1994 we bring in our town on December, 1994. For first 8 weeks it was completely packed. Due to cinema upgrade we double up the ticket price from 8/- to 16/- (Balcony) .. after 8 weeks it was back to normal 8/-.

Few interesting terms which was fulfilled to get prints :

    1. Upgrade the cinema to match their quality parameters.
    2. Disco lights around the screen to be installed which lights up during songs.
    3. Minimum 25 weeks run and even after that we can not remove movie till minimum returns per week at 35000/- Nett.
    4. One antipiracy person will be hosted in town to take care of prints, his accommodation and food was taken care.
    5. Security was deployed for first 10 weeks to control crowd, on exhibitor expense.
    6. Box tickets will be given only to ladies.
    7. Canteen menu would be quality passed.

All this was because families almost stopped coming to cinema by that time .. and going for movie with family was become embarrassment. Every one from Aditya chopra to Karan Johar should salute to Sooraj Bartajya every morning, for this revolutionary change. DDLJ would have been floating at 15 Crore max if HAHK didn’t happen.

We played HAHK for 28 weeks .. first 8 weeks were almost packed, next 8 weeks were good .. after that it was just floating and was formality to run because of terms and condition. In comparison DDLJ ran for 16 weeks ..

“1994. For first 8 weeks it was completely packed. Due to cinema upgrade we double up the ticket price from 8/- to 16/- (Balcony) .. after 8 weeks it was back to normal 8/-.”
In Kanpur they increased from 15-16 to 26 and it never dropped. And other cinema halls also increased the ticket price in no time.

Salman Khan & Sooraj Barjatya Interview on 20 Years Of HAHK

    • Baba 10 years ago

its always good to see old teams come back together. i liked salman in mpk and hahk though i dont think much about both the films but he was likeable/sincere. but a lot has happened since hahk. i doubt if salman now can fit into barjatya world. he was somewhat out of sorts during hssh itself with cases of blackbuck etc. that innocence/bholapan is long gone.

Good interview. But I stilll cringe while watching all his films. MPK was best.
