Black Scenes Inspired/Copied from The Miracle Worker

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie Black does open with a dedication to Hellen Keller and her institute for inspiring. But it does not say that it is based on her life or her autobiography.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali said this. “‘But it is not “The Miracle Worker”. It is the life of Helen Keller. Her life has a timeless quality. It can be expressed in any form – a play, a TV series, a film from India or Hollywood. If a director interprets Helen Keller’s life in his own way it does not mean he is copying another film on the subject. If a director makes a film on Gandhi it does not mean he is stealing incidents from Richard Attenborough’s film.” Link

The Miracle Worker was the screen adaptation of the stage play which was based on Hellen Keller’s autobiography. It was nominated for five Academy Awards and won two awards, Best Actress for Anne Bancroft and Best Supporting Actress for Patty Duke. Anyways it depends on what one wants to call this – adaptation/inspiration/homage/tribute/plagiarism.

Black has a scene where Amitabh disciplines Ayesha Kapoor. Here is the original scene from The Miracle Worker.

There is a scene from Black where she learns to say Water. Here is the original scene where she learns to say Water.

There is a scene where Amitabh says that he wants to take complete charge. Here is the original scene where Anne says that he wants to take complete charge.

There is a scene where they find out that she is blind and deaf. Here is the original scene where they find out that she is blind and deaf.

There is the scene where Shernaz Patel tells that she wants to talk like everyone else. Here is the original scene.

Yep. That helps and many people like me are not fond of black and white movies. Last one I saw was The Artist but in real sense was To kill a Mockingbird.

ps – I think Indian movies of40s- 50s copied the drama and acting (loud as if the person in front of you is many miles away) style from hollywood movies. Sadly Hollywood changed but we kept the style of acting and presentation till now!

I did not like Black and The Miracle Worker either. Since The Miracle Worker is adapted from a stage play it is like someone recorded the stage play – the acting is loud and theatrical.

I did not like To kill a Mockingbird the first time I saw it. I thought that the kids were being given too much screen time and did not like the little girl. I saw the movie again a few years later and liked it the second time around. The problem was that I was looking from the adult’s point of view instead of the kid’s point of view who was the narrator.

When I watched Black i was blown out by their performance… I liked each and every character of the film and the child artist was such a wonderful actress. Just WoW. Watched 2 times. I don’t know whether i will like it or not if i watch it this time around.

Not sure if this is a official Turkish remake of Black or plagiarized from Black. Thanks to CilemaSnob

Apparently its not a official remake. They are plagiarizing Black. Its Karma.
