Best of 2010 (Actors)

5. Arshad Warsi (Ishqiya)- As a crude thief Arshad had sparkling screen presence. His rowdiness was very effective and at same side he also does a marvelous in the scene where seduces Vidya Balan. It’s a riveting act from Arshad and he remains one of the best things in the film.

4. Hritik Roshan (Guzaarissh)- In a depressing and not so happening film there was a silver line in the film and the face saving element of the film and that is the protagonist Hritik Roshan who packs himself as a paralyzed illusionist. His anger, his fun side, his wittiness and most importantly his pain, everything is so perfectly displayed that you cannot ignore him for a second in this film.

3. Salman Khan (Dabangg)- In my books this has been Salman Khan’s best performance of his career and there’s huge difference between his this one and the runner-up performance by him. Right from his look to his movements, Salman Khan did a perfect job. The major reason for such a surprise act by Salman according to me is because he has enjoyed himself while acting and has been quite candid with whatever he has done. And it was a role which no-one would have done it as efficiently as the Khan does.

2. Shahrukh Khan (My Name Is Khan)- The role SRK plays in this film is the most challenging and demanding role in recent times. SRK is in sync and he excels in every second. Notice him in the scene where Kajol agrees up to marry him- his shy, his happiness, his joy everything is outstandingly enacted. His dialogue delivery was another master stroke. This one is SRK’s best no doubt in his whole career. Bravura!

1. Ronit Roy (Udaan)- As a stringent dad, Ronit Roy has done his work honestly. Terrific in a word! He does his work so amazingly that he creates a violent feeling inside the viewer against him and that’s exactly what was required to get the film on right track. Ronit Roy’s confidence was clear and he seemed very much in the character. Two big thumbs and It did not really took me time to choose the best one.

Special Mention- Raghubir Yadav (Peepli Live) as nattha’s brother, Rajat barmecha (Udaan), Hritk Roshan (Kites), Manu Sharma (Phas Gaya Re Obama), Ranbir (Raajneeti), Manoj bajpai (Raajneeti), Ajay devgn (Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai), Rishi kapoor (Do Dooni Chaar)

Top5 Actors of 2010(not in any order).

    Hrithik Roshan(Guzaarish)

-One f d most underated works of SLB…Potrayed beautifully on screen in a Nolan/Tim Burton sort of way.
The movie suffered due to ultra high budget, zero promotions and very high class treatment…HR had also suffrd wid Kites.

HR was magic on screen..Totally fab…My heart went out to him wen drops of water fell on him and he couldnt do a thing abt it all night…Also dat scene at d end where he locks the lawyer inside d box to explain his condition.

2010 was not a great year for performances.I didnt any of the above qualifies for a great performance.Salman in dabangg was just a poster boy.Hrithik in Guzaarish and srk in MNIK were very OTT and pretentious.yes ronit roy was decent in udaan but again nothing special.not seen ishqiya.actually ajay in OUTIM should have been in top 5 instead of hrithik and srk.

  4. Serenzy 12 years ago

    -Salman Khan(Dabangg)
movie was good but Chulbul Pandey was iconic…One f d BEST EVER characters of Indian Cinema…
The ‘craze’ f the movie is still unmatched…Truly an ATBB.

    -Shah Rukh Khan(MNIK)
Again a mediocre but good movie but the amazinggg amazing Rizwan Khan overshadowed evrything.

Hammed in parts but won my heart in the 2nd half & the mature but cute Love Story of Rizwan & Mandira

    Ranbir Kapoor(Rajneeti)
-truly India’s answer to Pacino’s Michael Corleone,
Ranbir was a scheming, rich, smooth talking vulnerable but tactful Joker of the pack as Samar Pratap.
Overshadowing Nana,Ajay,Bajpayee,Rampal single handedly is no joke.

Jha’s 2nd Best Work till date wid Ranbir’s gtting the potrayal of Arjun/Michael spot on.

Serenzy- Good to know you have loved Guzaarish. For me it was 2.5/5 and thanks to three excellent performances- hritik, Aishwarya, Shernaz Patel (Hritik’s friend). The film lacked passion by director’s view. This is my feeling. At some stage I got bored. First half was engaging but the film just fell apart post intermission. And yes those two scenes you mentioned were best scenes of Guzaarish. But Guzaarish didnt have anything else IMO.

  7. Serenzy 12 years ago

And the BEST ACTOR OF 2010 WAS WITHOUT A DOUBT,

    Ajay Devgn for OUATIM.

Saw the movie 2 times in theatres…Enjoyed it to d core.
Sultan Mirza makes me go Krazzzzy and the Awesomely Perfect foil provided by Emmy’s Shoaib to Ajay’s Sultan are stuff, legends are made up off.

Music,**Dialogues**, my Kangy, my lovely Prachi!!!

    But over them Devgn towers.

See d intesity in dat scene where he says, “Patrick, shehar saaf chahiye” wid an angry look to d ‘bad boy’ Emmy.

    Superb.

Baba Ji I would like to know which performances impressed and not with how many you disagree with me! 🙂

cr7- Wow too many names which are in contrast of mines. Farhan was good in KCK but the level set by performances that year was too high IMO. And he is Pradhuman Singh and yes he was amusing as Laden 😀 Good choices!

Serenzy- Yes Dabangg was entertaining because of chulbul. MNIK was a terrific film over-all. 4/5 from me for MNIK. Raajneeti was smart and it achieved what it had to!

sanket – As i said ,2010 was an ordinary year performance wise.May be ajay in OUTIM would be my choice.I will list 3 films i liked in 2010:

      OUTIM , Robot, BBB.

Serenzy the craze of OUTIM is too high in Mumbai circuit. My friend calls it the best film ever made in Indian history. When i ask him if he is sure, he retorts “without doubt!”. OUTIM was really good and thrilling. After Ajay it was Randip Hooda who impressed me with his act! Emraan was good and so was Prachi. Kangana had nothing to act for! If it was not for Arshad warsi in Ishqiya, Ajay would’ve skated at number 5 in my list!

  10. Serenzy 12 years ago

    -Other memorable ones(Actors only),

Rishi Kapoor as Prof. Duggal(Do Dooni Chaar)…Unmatchable!!

    Ranveer Singh as Bittoo Sharma(BBB)

    (my darling)Emraan Hashmi as Shoaib(OUATIM)

    Manoj Bajpayee(Rajneeti..Mind Blowing…”karaara jawaab”)

    Ronit Roy(Udaan..FANTASTIK) _/\_

    Raghubir Yadav(Peepli LIVE)

    Arshad Warsi’s Babban(Ishqiya)

    Naseer Sahab’s Khalujaan(Ishqiya)

    Salman Khan(Veer)

    Ajay Devgn(Aakrosh)

    & God himself
    “RAJINIKANT in Robot”
    😀

    sanket porwal 12 years ago

Serenzy, ranvir Singh in BBB was good but it was Anushka’s show all the way. In Aakrosh, paresh rawal excelled IMO. And there was nothing like performance by rajnikanth in Robot, it was all about his charisma 🙂

  12. cr7 12 years ago

forgot to mention ranveer for bbb and ajay for ouatm..both were good

  13. Serenzy 12 years ago

    Oye Sanku,
Rajini is God…Uske khilaaf kuch nahin!!
    😛

Yup,fell in Love wid Anushka Sharma aftr BBB mahn!!

Paresh was a knockout in Aakrosh man…Totally blew me away…I mean i literally hated him…Superb Acting!!

Abhimanyu Singh in RC was out of this World.

  17. narad_muni 12 years ago

    Sanku,
Gud to c something other than BO 🙂

I hv nt seen Guzarish and dont intend to do so either. Bhansali is one director whom I dont like at all – he has an eye for beautiful sets and picturization but goes overboard with it. His films are full of OTT melodrama which is similar to our age-old ‘jatra’ rather than feature films. I dont even like his acclaimed works like HDDCS and Black.

Now coming back to the post, here are some of the performances from the lead actors which I liked –

Sallu – I dont like Sallu but Chulbul Pandey is absolutely iconic. Dabang was at best an average film which created mass hysteria just bcoz of Salman’s portryal of Chulbul. Munni added to the craze but the film belongs to Sallu n Sallu only.

SRK – Arguably one of his best performances … the role required histrionics and so some scenes might seem OTT but SRK portrayed Rizwan Khan in a really commendable manner. The film did not work for me as it fell flat in the later portions. Also, the film did not have enough masala to entice the audience. But still, it is one of the biggest grossers will a gross collection of 200 Cr only due to SRK’s performance.

Ajay – He fitted the role of Sultan to the T..his dialogue delivery and body language was spot on. A very nice film but I expected more hard-hitting gangster movie rather than romanticising the topic.

Ranbir – Contrary to popular belief, I found him convincing in his portrayal of the desi Pacino avatar. I also like Arjun’s performance in the movie

On a side note, I find Udaan a highly overrated film. But Ronit Roy’s performance was truly a highlight .. not sure if it qualifies as the leading role or not/
And as Serenzy mentioned, the villain in Raktacharitra was played with such venom and brutality that it will manage to scare the viewer…awesum mind-blowing performance.

Shilac- 🙂 I love to discuss films more than BO.

Well even i dont like Bhansali’s film. Black was good and Guzaarish was fine but rest none were even average. Devdaas and Saawariya both were horrible for me.

Agreed Abhimanyu singh was the rockstar of RC-1.

Serenzy- LSD was highly over-rated according to me. I mean there was no creativity. The camera moves were its heroes. 2/5 for some audacious scenes depicted by Banerjee. But i love banerjee’s film-making and genuinely awaiting shahnghai 🙂

Nice post Sanket. Detailed Comment in few hours!

  20. sputnik 12 years ago

    Good post Sanket.

Arshad Warsi was good but it still had a Circuit hangover with one liners and being a sidekick to Naseer.

I did not like Hrithik or the movie Guzaarish. I would have posted a link to my review but many of you may not like it 😉 You guys should watch Whose Life is s it Anyway? (1981) and Mar Adentro aka The Sea Inside (2004) from which Guzaarish is inspired/copied.

I am one of the few who liked Dabangg and I liked Salman a lot. I think he was in character throughout the movie.

MNIK was good till it went downhill with that Georgia track and hurricane scenes. But SRK was excellent in it and he was the best that year in leading roles. When actors do roles like these and pull them off there is no question of anyone else being the best actor that year even in Hollywood. (Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man, Daniel Day Lewis in My Left Foot, Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump).

Ronit Roy was excellent too but to me he was in a supporting role and he deserved all the supporting actor awards that he got.

Ajay was very good too and I liked him here more than in Company but it was a similar role and even the mentor protege thing was similar. Moreover I though the movie and his character ended abruptly with his getting killed. After his confrontation with Emraan there should have been more tussle between them. I did not like Emraan in it that much. I never liked Emraan – he does the same/similar cool guy roles. But I liked him in the trailers of Shanghai and I am hoping I will finally like him.

I did not like OUTIM much – it was just dialogue baazi and everyone was talking in one liners. It was just style over substance. As narad said it was romanticizing the whole 70s gangster era based on movies from that era – it should have been gritty and hard hitting. RGV portrayed the gangster flicks realistically with satya and company and Milan took it back to the way they used to be glamorized.

Liked Vivek Oberoi in Rakta Charitra too. Yes Abhimanyu Singh was excellent but he again was in supporting/negative role.

Did not like Ranbhir in Raajneeti – he was not convincing to me – too bland and expressionless. I liked Arjun the most in it followed by Nana. Manoj Bajpai was too theatrical – did not like him. Worst was Ajay.

Liked Ranveer a lot too in BBB – definitely the best debut of the year. Pradhuman Singh was the best comic performance of the year in TBL.

  21. narad_muni 12 years ago

Sputnik, you summarized it brilliantly …could not agree more.

“Ajay was very good too and I liked him here more than in Company but it was a similar role and even the mentor protege thing was similar. Another point where I agree with u is that Arjun Rampal was the best performer in Rajneeti..

I am curious to know what u n all think about Udaan. I saw the movie a long time after the release and had very high expectations but the movie failed to meet those… am I the only one who thinks it to be overrated?

    Milu, waiting for your comment….

  22. Serenzy 12 years ago

Yes, OUATIM & Company have similar tones and IMO, Company is a tad better film than OUATIM.

But as far as potrayal goes, Devgn’s Mallick is easily mauled by Devgn’s Sultan…

Mallick was all brooding & not as powerful and impacting as Sultan…Sultan had an aura/dominating power kinda feel wid dose Rajaat Arora dialogues.

Even Chandu(Viviek) overshadowed Devgn’s Mallick in Company.

But as hard as Emraan tried his Shoaib cud not beat Devgn’s Sultan at all.

Company though, remains the Better Film of the two.

Sputnik- Actually i haven’t categorized with Supporting/negative/comic role. In whichever roles the above mentioned names are, they have been very good for me irrespective of is he was a sidekick or in negative. But yes i wont mention the one who has impressed but he has 2-3 scenes to do.

And hey we would like to know your reviews. I had read few of your reviews…you found ra.one good one, if i am not mistaken! You hated Rockstar…please correct me if i am wrong! I had read few of your reviews. not recollecting another few i had read.

Yeah i know Guzaarish was very highly inspired from a english film. thanks for the name. Agreed with ranvir singh and Pradhuman singh. but i feel best debut was Rajat Barmecha for Udaan.

    Thanks for your views.

MILIND- Thanks. Waiting for your views!
