Best Indian Pop Songs from the 90s

The early 90s started a new trend of Hindi Pop Songs or IndiPop. These pop songs became very popular on the music countdown shows. 90s was a great time for Indian pop music and for a while it appeared that pop music would take over Hindi film music but unfortunately it did not. Anyway here are some of the Best Pop Songs from the 90s. I have tried to avoid any remixes of Bollywood songs.

Starting with Baba Sehgal’s Dil Dhadke from his album Thanda Thanda Paani. The song starring Pooja Bedi used to come a lot on MTV.

Pari Hoon Mein beautifully sung by Suneetha Rao.

In the 90s MTV broke off with star TV and MTV started playing for a few hours everyday on DD 2. This song Stylebhai by Stylebhai starring Ashwini Bhave used to come a lot on MTV.

Alisha Chinai’s first music video De De from the Album Bombay Girl. Made in India released later became a much bigger hit.

Dooba Dooba by Silk Route which had a excellent music video too. Mohit Chauhan the lead singer of Silk Route is a very famous playback singer now.

Shweta Shetty with Johnny Joker.

Even Amitabh had a hit pop song Eer Bir Phatte.

Daler Mehndi had a quite a lot of hit pop songs. Saade Dil Te Chhuriyan Chaliyan.

Daler’s brother Mika Singh made his debut with this pop song Sawan Mein Lag Gayee Aag starring Gulshan Grover.

The lovely O Sanam by Lucky Ali.

For a while Anaida was a rival to Alisha with Oova Ova.

Chhuimui Si Tum Lagti Ho which introduced the beautiful Preeti Jhangiani.

The lovely Maeri by Euphoria.

Duniya by Raageshwari was a big hit too and used to come a lot in the song countdown show Superhit Muqabla.

Ho Gayi Hai Mohabbat sung by Aslam and Shibani. It had a beautiful music video.

And there was Suchitra Krishnamoorthi too with Dole Dole.

Colonial Cousins which had Hariharan and Leslie Lewis had a bunch of hit songs like this one Sa Ni Dha Pa.

Sonu Nigam had a hit pop song Tu starring Bipasha.

Gur Naal Ishq Mitha by Bally Sagoo starring Malaika Arora.

Mehndi Ki Raat by Models

Aryans had a few hit pop songs like Ankhon me Tera hi Chehra, Yeh Hawa Kehti Hai Kya and . Here is Ankhon me Tera hi Chehra starring Shahid Kapoor and Hrishita Bhatt.

Falguni Pathak had a few hit songs. Chudi Jo Khanki Haathon Mein by Falguni Pathak

Breathless sung by Shankar Mahadevan and written by Javed Akhtar and directed by Zoya Akhtar.

Chandni Raatein by Shamsa Kanwal

Na Jaane Kahan Kho Gaya Hai by Nitin Bali featuring Channel V vj Ruby Bhatia.

The Ghazal singers Jagjit Singh and Pankaj Udhas had quite a few pop songs/Ghazals too. Chak Jigar Ke by Jagjit Singh

Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein by Pankaj Udhas

    Please post pop songs that you like in comments. I included only one song per artist. Please don’t post pop songs which were remixes of Bollywood songs. I am planning to make a new post for that.

    Good post . I liked dooba doobha,maeri,ankhon mein tera hi chehra .Never seen the breathless video before .I used to think breathless is from a movie .

      Breathless music video was very popular in India back then and Shankar Mahadevan became quite famous because of that song.

    Nice post yes in 90s lots of pop albums and new male and female singers made debut with excellent songs/albums.

      Yeah Aryans had another hit song Yeh Hawa Kahti hai kya too. Pankaj Udhas and Jagjit Singh had quite a few hit songs.

      I missed Tanha Dil by Shaan.

      I left Lift Karadey because I think it released after 2000.
