Best Death Scenes of Bollywood

Most Bollywood movies avoid any of the lead actors dying because they want to have a happy ending. Many believe that movies with the lead actors dying won’t work at the box office. But death scenes have made many movies memorable and many of them have worked great at the box office too contrary to popular perception. Death scenes also give the actors a chance to show off their acting skills. Sure some of these scenes are over dramatized and involve a bit of hamming but hey its Bollywood. So here are some of the Best Death Scenes of Bollywood in mostly chronological order to the best of my knowledge. Please post your favorites in comments.

Starting with the iconic Rajesh Khanna death scene from Anand which has Amitabh desperately trying to save his friend’s life till the very last moment. Amitabh returning to see Rajesh Khanna dead and demanding his over talkative friend to speak and Rajesh Khanna’s voice playing from the tape telling him how ephemeral life is.

Sholay was the movie which made me a movie buff. Amitabh sacrificing his life for Dharmendra is a great scene from Sholay and I think it was a major reason for my becoming a Amitabh fan back then.

The iconic death scene from Deewar with Amitabh dying in his mother’s arms.

The lovers dying scene from Ek Duje Ke Liye which has been repeated in so many different movies since then.

I could not find Nargis shooting Sunil Dutt scene from Mother India online. Dilip shooting Amitabh scene is similar to that and also to Shashi Kapoor shooting Amitabh scene from Deewar which can also be said to be inspired from the Mother India scene. It still is a good scene with the father not wanting to shoot his son but still having to shoot him.

When I was a kid and I saw this scene on TV I liked it a lot back then but I now feel that there is a bit of hamming involved. It still is considered a very iconic scene by many. But the bad thing about the scene is that it is so true to life even after so many years.

Kumar Gaurav trying to protect his brother Sanjay Dutt who tries to flee but ends up killed by the cops from Naam

Jackie Shroff taking revenge for his younger brother Anil Kapoor’s death by killing Nana Patekar from Parinda.

Baazigar has two very good death scenes. The first one is Shilpa being killed by Shah Rukh which I had posted earlier as Scene of the Week. Here is the final death scene which is inspired from Amitabh’s dying scene from Deewar. Even Shah Rukh’s acting and dialogues are similar to Amitabh’s from Deewar.

Salman and Shah Rukh getting killed from Karan Arjun.

Chakravarthy begging Urmila to open the door and him being getting shot in front of a scared Urmila from Satya.

A scared Sanjay Dutt who has lost his mind being killed by his mother Reema Lagoo to free him from his misery.

Here are death scenes from the Bimal Roy version of Devdas and the new SLB version of Devdas. I have not seen the older Devdas but I think the death scene in it is more natural whereas the death scene in the new Devdas is more operatic.

Akshay Kumar being shot by Aishwarya Rai from Khakee which I don’t think anyone expected back then.

@Aryan, Omkara scene i like it. Also Maqbool last sequence when Tabu dies is great.

Great selections by Sputnik too. Barring 1-2 scenes most are my fav. I mentioned Dev Anand monologue in Guide in other comment. I find it similar to American Beauty monologue – which had another great death scene (though not from bollywood)

“I have not seen the older Devdas but I think the death scene in it is more natural whereas the death scene in the new Devdas is more operatic.”

@Sputnik, yaar when you get time try to watch Bimal Roy’s version πŸ˜› . I know Telugu one was good but Bimal Roy and Dilip was more authentic. Dilip as a loser in life was more authentic. Anyways I have said this manier times earlier πŸ˜€

Sunil Dutt scene in Mother India is iconic as you mentioned. Vaastav is great one too from his son.

PS: The Guide had so many errors in editing. Now I notice it. It could have done better with editing. (leaving apart Dev Anand as an actor)

      Thanks @Ritz

I have not watched the Telugu version of Devdas either πŸ™‚ I have just watched some scenes of it too.

But I will definitely watch the Bimal Roy version of Devdas. I know its on youtube. The other day I had downloaded Jewel Thief from youtube. I might watch that first. If the print seems good I might download Devdas from youtube too and watch it.

undoubtedly, the death scene in ANAND, must rank as the most poignant in this genre.
of course, thereafter, this duo that also gave NAMAK HARAAM, just went separate ways
Amitabh supplanted Kaka as numero uno
also, Rajesh Khanna played many roles wherein he dies, with his mom always lamenting that fact.
When he succumbed to a liver disease, it was life imitating art.
and, that probably, is what makes the death scene (and the one in SAFAR) so touching!

Nice collection. I would like to add a few more to the list.
    1. Om Prakash death scene from “Sharaabi” (superb acting by Amitabh).
    2. Rishi Kapoor death scene from “Raju Chacha” (death scene made alive by Rishi Kapoor)
    3. Rohit Roy calling his family before death from “Shootout at Lokhandwala”
    4. Manoj Bajpai killed by Govind Namdev from “Satya”
    5. Shilpa Shetty death scene from “Baazigar” (one of the most unexpected twists in Hindi cinema)

      Thanks.

Manoj Bajpai getting killed by Govind Namdev from Satya was a very good scene.

I had mentioned Shilpa Shetty death scene from β€œBaazigar” in my post. Had posted it as Scene of the Week before. Will still add here as you said it was one of the most unexpected twists in Hindi cinema though its copied from a Hollywood movie A Kiss Before Dying.

Will check out rest of the scenes you mentioned.

I still remember the scene from anand which i saw in childhood, not knowing if this a great movie. But I started crying.
I loved death scenes in Sholay too (crying again).
    Deewas scene is excellent too.
Shakti scene was excellent too, as properly commented by Sputnil. Dilip Kumar acted that conflict in a sincere way.

Loved New Devdas scene too, it gave me goosebumps as it was sincerely a great scene though its operatic and not authentic but then In SLB world its not about realism,..
Old devdas scene is authentic and dilip kumar is excellent in the movie which itself is excellent but i didn’t feel much sadness just because of just death scene. Whether in New Devdas my feeling of sadness got multiplied because of Death scene.

Vastav scene is good too, bit philosophical.Similarly Mother india one.
Satys’s both death scenes are good too, specially Manoj’s scene is shocking and full of irony as in the previous scene Bheeku says “Mumbai ka king kaun” and here you can see that he got killed by a politician in few second.

Amitabh plays death scene excellently. He is very sincere.
Bazigar 1st scene was shocking but second scene as told by Sputnik, it feels similar to Deewar.

Karan arjun scene is also excellent because i really felt terror in that scene and Amrish kappor was very terrifying. I think not many people recognize that performance but I really felt most terrifying of him in Karan arjun. Mogembu and General Dong were like lil entertaining. you don’t feel terror because of them. Even in DDLJ i felt more terror of him than in these two movies.

    Omkara scene is also good.

    Dayawan scene was also good.

Will add more in list as i remember..

    Dayavan death scene
