    Its about time ; bollywood kicks these so called singers (Z grade copies of Rafi) who utter / pronounce words like “Pechane” for (pehchane)

    Pathetic singing

      This feb I had a chance to experience a live concert of Sonu Nigam from just about 80-100 m away. He is a legend. The things he did on stage for 3 hrs. If he is not a good singer, I don’t know who is. The man is simply a genius if there ever was one.

        @Piyush, its about pronunciation.

        Btw Sonu also says he is a legend. 😉 He RT’d this:

        “Vo to hai… RT @NinaLuck: @sonuniigaam Your voice and @iamsrk on screen is magic…Legends!!”

    @Ritz
    Good observation here is one more word DO KADAM Instead of DO KHADAM.

    Talking about pronounciation, here is one song in which Lata always goes “Paila” (for Pehla) whereas Mukesh always goes like this..

    While Mukesh first says paila and then goes pehla .

    Its not an accident. Its intentional – he does that more than 4-5 times in the song… pronouncing “Pehla” clearly. but I think he goes “Paila” as it goes with the tune with first line of the song. and he repeats “paila” as well always.

    I was bit harsh on Sonu Nigam here – not only because he is pronouncing in wrong way…but I find anyone pronouncing Hindi words in “Hinglish” way plain irritating. If it goes with the tune, its fine.
    Besides, Sonu sometimes now sounds like he considers himself to be “almost there”. He sounds like he doesnt mean what he is saying // kind of aloof from lyrics and in love with his own voice ..kind of .like Kishore was for most part of his career.

    I have not heard a single song in which Rafi was just sleep-singing (equivalent of sleepwalking in singing context) – his every love song was like he was doing a pooja of his lover..and as if the words were his own. I know I am biased to rafi than Kishore…but still…

      Thanks for the song and good observation about “Paila” and “Pehla”.

      I know you have said before that Kishore was in love with his own voice but I think he was more into experimentation. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it seemed like he was overdoing it.

      I have always felt that Sonu is in love with his own voice. He thinks that he is a great (I believe he even gave interviews saying that) because he knows classical singing and I feel many times that he is just showing off instead of singing the song the way it should be.

      I am more biased to Kishore than Rafi but I agree that Rafi was the best when it comes to pronunciation or enunciation. There are some Kishore songs where I had to listen to them multiple times to find out the exact word and there are some songs where I think Kishore has not pronounced some words correctly. I have not heard a song where Rafi was wrong when it comes to pronunciation.

        Yes, I felt same about Sonu.

        Agree that Kishore was more into experimentation probably more than any other singer ever in bollywood. He was a good singer Its just that I find him overrated.
        (not only him but all this 70s music / RD Burman and stuff…when the golden era was way before that)

    Regarding pronunciation its up to the Mother tongue. Because Md Rafi was a muslim and he learned Urdu Language so obviously he had command in all kind of urdu words. The other singers who were unable to read & write Urdu they had problems in pronunciations & they learned in Hindi Language.

    Btw, I just heard this song in which Sonu does exact copy of Rafi and he is very clear in pronunciation and melody as Rafi was. He has done a very good job (even if there is no individuality)
