Agneepath and references from The Bible: Goliath Vs David

Excerpts from Hrithik interview : Link

Audiences will still try to compare you with the old Vijay.

No, the moment you see my Vijay, that comparison will go away. People will come to see Vijay Deenanath Chauhan, but when they look at me, they will think he doesn’t look like Vijay, he is nothing like Vijay, he is nobody, he doesn’t have style, he doesn’t have that swagger, that walk, not even the voice..

Their expectations are broken now and they will see the film keeping me in mind.

Is it true that you said Agneepath is the toughest film of your career?

Yes. The climax of the film was shot in Diu. It was so hot and throughout the climax, I am fighting Sanju sir (Sanjay Dutt), who looks like a Goliath compared to me. My clothes were torn and I was almost bare-bodied, there was blood make-up all over me. I had to fall and I was getting hurt. I was like this for 22 days, so it ended up being the toughest schedule of my life.

Do you think the character of Kancha will overpower Vijay, that people will like him better?

They should like him better in the beginning of the film and they should think that a fight between Kancha and Vijay is impossible. They should feel that Vijay is nothing in front of Kancha, and then the trajectory of the film should convince the audience of the David-Goliath impossibility.

If you think the mission is impossible, that makes the film more entertaining. If it was easy and if we were equals, you would not enjoy the journey. The fight is between a common man and a Goliath.

The Goliath-David Bible story Summary background:

The Philistine army had gathered for war against Israel. The two armies faced each other, camped for battle on opposite sides of a steep valley. A Philistine giant measuring over nine feet tall and wearing full armor came out each day for forty days, mocking and challenging the Israelites to fight. His name was Goliath. Saul, the King of Israel, and the whole army were terrified of Goliath.
One day David, the youngest son of Jesse, was sent to the battle lines by his father to bring back news of his brothers. David was probably just a young teenager at the time. While there, David heard Goliath shouting his daily defiance and he saw the great fear stirred within the men of Israel. David responded, “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of God?”

So David volunteered to fight Goliath. It took some persuasion, but King Saul finally agreed to let David fight against the giant. Dressed in his simple tunic, carrying his shepherd’s staff, slingshot and a pouch full of stones, David approached Goliath. The giant cursed at him, hurling threats and insults.

David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied … today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air … and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel … it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”

As Goliath moved in for the kill, David reached into his bag and slung one of his stones at Goliath’s head. Finding a hole in the armor, the stone sank into the giant’s forehead and he fell face down on the ground. David then took Goliath’s sword, killed him and then cut off his head. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran. So the Israelites pursued, chasing and killing them and plundering their camp.

Sanjays character seems to have been designed around Goliath.Hrithik of course as David, is the common man who rises to the challenge of Goliath.Sanjay is shown to carry Gita in the trailers who recites quotes from it thinking he is invincible.

This david vs goliath angle should make the movie interesting and distinct from the original one..For in the original viay was although was a commoner ,was shown as a invincible Don..More Godfatherish kind of DON whom everybodyelse feared….

Interesting to see how they plot the david-goliath angle…

see the way the character of sanjay n hrithik are designed. The battle bears exact resemblance to the david-Goliath showdown. The villian here is not a comedian,he is a serious killer. The hero is not a hero but a apparently weak commoner.Sanjay keeps calling himself invincible in the trailers.Talkijng about old AP or deewar, the battle in those movies had different groundsThe old .VDC was larger than life and infact danny was more of a “commoner” there. Here one can say its the reverse.
