Agent Vinod’s Pyaar Ki Pungi Copied from this Song?

The Iranian music band Barobax Corp has issued a notice to Eros International Media, Illuminati Films Private Ltd and Super Cassettes Ltd.

“On March 12 this year, the band came across the promotions of the movie ‘Agent Vinod’ on satellite television in Iran. The song ‘Pungi Baja De..’ was being aired. On listening to the song, the band realised that the initial portion of the song is lifted without any change from the title song of their album,” the notice claims.

According to the notice, the band is the owner of the copyright of the song ‘Soosan Khanoom’ which is registered under the Copyright Act in Canada on June 30 last year and hence the music of the song cannot be used without the band’s permission. Soon after learning about the copyright infringement the band sent their representative Nargis Kazerooni to India to initiate legal action.

“We demand the music director, producers and directors to refrain from releasing the song in the movie or use it to promote the movie. Failing to do so, the band shall be compelled to initiate proceedings to seek a restraining order and necessary compensation,” the notice states.

The picturization and dance is inspired from the music video of Fatboy Slim’s Weapon of Choice featuring Christopher Walken. Here is the video. I had posted this as Song of the Day sometime back.

Producer denies similarities between Pungi song and Iranian track

Makers of the upcoming Agent Vinod refuted the claim made by an Iranian music band, which said that there are similarities between film’s Pungi Baja De and their number Soosan Khanoom.

Barobax Corp, a music company, founded by three Iranian nationals, has slapped a legal notice against the makers of the soon-to-be-released Bollywood action-spy movie, Agent Vinod, for allegedly infringing their copyright over the prelude used in the catchy Pungi Baja de track from the film.

The music band has alleged that the initial portion of the song Pungi from Agent Vinod, which has become a rage now, has been “lifted without any change” from the title song — Soosan Khanoom of their album.

However, in an interview, producer of Agent Vinod, Dinesh Vijan denied this claim.

“There is no similarity between the two tracks. It’s just that for the first, three-four seconds of the groove cannot be patented anywhere else. For once, Pritam’s melody is original,” Vijan said.

“If you listen to both the tracks, you will come to know there is no similarity, except for the first three-four seconds,” he said.

The Iranian music band, in a notice, had demanded the music director, producers and directors to refrain from releasing the song in the movie. The band had said they would be compelled to initiate proceedings to seek a restraining order and necessary compensation.

“There are two versions of the song, the one that will be there in the film, has nothing to do with the song of the singing group so they cannot do anything about it. We will reply in the right manner,” Vijan said.

Agent Vinod, starring Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor in lead roles, releases on March 23.’

‘The band has now withdrawn the case and issued this statement:

“We decided to withdraw the case filed against Mr. Pritam and others for the copying of a song of Barobax an Iranian band. After looking into the defences [sic] of Mr. Pritam and the analysis made by various expert, we have realised that Mr. Pritam is right and there is no copying of our song and so we understood that we cannot built a good case. We do not want to get into any further legal issue and so we are withdrawing the case, as we know that Mr. Pritam’s Lawyer Henal Vakharia is an expert in Copyright laws and there will be strong criminal action otherwise made out against us. We sincerely apologise Mr. Pritam for all such and withdraw all our allegations made by us against him.”’
