Actor AK Hangal dies at 95

Veteran actor Avtar Kishen Hangal has died in a Mumbai hospital. He was 95. His funeral will be held this afternoon at Mumbai’s Pavan Hans crematorium.

Mr Hangal was admitted to Parekh Hospital in Santa Cruz in suburban Mumbai on August 16 after he slipped and fell in his bathroom, fracturing his right thigh bone, on August 13.

“He had a fall on August 13. On August 16, he was admitted to the hospital as he had suffered a back injury and had to undergo a surgery. But that could not take place as later it was found that he has chest and breathing problems,” the actor’s son Vijay Hangal said on August 24.

Mr Hangal was put on life support today and was too weak to be operated on. “He is on life support system. One of his lungs is not functioning. He is also having respiratory problems,” Dr Vinod Khanna, Orthopaedic surgeon at Asha Parekh hospital told PTI.

Condolence wishes have been pouring in from Bollywood insiders. Actress Shabana Azmi tweeted: An era comes to an end. Theatre and film were enriched by him.

AK Hangal, who has acted in over 200 films, is best known for his roles in Namak Haram, Sholay, Shaukin and Aaina. He was recently seen in TV series Madhubala, seven years after he last faced the camera.
