A Star is Born Review by Sputnik

Seasoned musician Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) discovers—and falls in love with—struggling artist Ally (Lady Gaga). She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer… until Jack coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally’s career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jack fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons.

Its a remake of a 1937 movie which has been remade multiple times (1954 and 1976). Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Abhimaan starring Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan is inspired from the same movie but it had a happy ending. So already knew the story. Its a musical and there are songs but they are during concerts and recording sessions. So the movie is not annoying as musicals usually are.

Bradley Cooper was excellent as the alcoholic singer Jack and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor. Lady Gaga was very good as Ally and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress. Sam Elliott was excellent as Bobby, Jack’s older half-brother and manager and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The rest of the cast was ok.

The movie was nominated for 8 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Sound Mixing. The movie won the Oscar for Best Original Song for the song Shallow.
