I think its time to get up from their own cacoon’s and smells coffee – for people like Mani or Kamal or Shankar or any such directors from down south who think they are great filmmakers. The Bollywood is light years ahead of them (VB, Kashyap, Soojit Sircar, Dibankar, Sriram Raghvan etc etc..) and in regional industries, Marathi film industry has definitely taken over in handling various topics with some great directors.
Its their past glory which they are still in – tamil filmmakers especially.
I say this because I sensed kind of ignorance and arrogance from Mani when he says he does not watch non-tamil films. No doubt the tamil films and directors he mentioned might be good , but Bollywood at the moment is light years ahead in terms of great scripts , directors and storytellers and even in technique.
Agree with you that “Its their past glory which they are still in” at least for Mani Ratnam. Alaipayuthey was itself nothing great and Ok Kanmani looks like an updated version of it.
Well said, Ritz. Mani Ratnam hasn’t had a good movie come out in years now. On the Hindi front, Raavan was a big dud and Guru before that was partly good, partly ridiculous. Yuva was a great concept, stretched on the screen, with underwhelming results. Hindi cinema has some good directors working on stories they believe in like VB, Sriram Raghavan, Shoojit Sircar and they are clearly ahead of Mani Ratnam in terms of technical finesse as well as storytelling ability.
