PK Has Huge Opening At Multiplexes

PK has had a huge opening at multiplexes recording morning occupancies of around 70%. The big cities are excellent and cities like Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore may put up record first day figures. The opening is less in some places like UP and Gujarat but the film has the highest ATP (average ticket prices) and the highest capacity ever even though the screen count is not the highest ever.
This should mean that the film should compensate for the weaker areas by huge huge business in multiplexes of big cities. Also the places like UP and Gujarat are not bad but just not as huge as metros. There block bookings from corporates for shows after 3pm also which means the afternoon and evening shows in metros will show even better occupancies.
The expectations are huge not just from an opening point of view but in the long run as the team as 3 Idiots behind them and it will be the weekdays which will decide if these expectations are met. The success of the film is not really an issue as this sort of initial almost ensures that.

PK is set for a 26-27 crore nett first day as per early estimates as the film has put up huge numbers at metro multiplexes especially Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore but the performance in mass areas is fair and could have been better.
The collections in UP, CP Berar, CI, Rajasthan, Bihar and Gujarat are good to average. In fact UP is pretty poor with even big centres like Lucknow and Kanpur putting up low numbers. The best performance is looking to come in Mumbai and Mysore. Its still a big number and will be the second highest non holiday opening ever but the general expectations in the industry were for a bigger opening day as Dhoom 3 managed 32 crore nett plus last year.
The high ticket rates have helped the city multiplexes to excellent numbers though occupancies were not huge. It will be imperative for the film to pick in mass pockets if it is to become that big grosser. It should still do pretty well even if they don’t pick up but wont be that mega grosser which was expected from the Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani combination.

surprisingly low numbers for day 1 . most aamir fans were looking at a 30-35 cr day 1 and it was justified considering the names involved and especially coming after 3i. i have been checking bms bookings since sunday and the occupancies were low on day 1 but even then i was expecting a higher number.
PK Has Very Good First Day

PK grossed 26 crore nett on its first day with some places doing excellent business while other places were good to average. The film was let down by the mass circuits with the performance in UP and Gujarat being on the weaker side. The best collections came in Mumbai city/Thane, Pune and South India. The Mumbai circuit overall was let down by Gujrat which grossed a low 2.50 crore nett. Mumbai circuit overall will come in a little over 8 crore nett despite big figures in Mumbai and Pune.
South India was fantastic with both Nizam/Andhra and Mysore being around the 2 crore nett mark. North India and West Bengal were good but UP, Rajasthan, CP Berar, Ci and Bihar were like Gujarat and performed below the mark.
The first day number is a very good one even though some places were below the mark and the opening is big enough to ensure a major success. But it will have show good growth across UP, Central India and Gujarat if it is to become that real big grosser and due to some places not giving optimum collections there is potential for growth.

PK has shown good growth on Saturday as collections should cbe around 29 crore nett which will take it to 55 crore nett in the first two days. The 10-12% growth is good for a Saturday though this film lways had potential for growth as there was plenty of spare capacity.
The growth came from the multiplexes while single screens were in the same range as Friday. The plus for the film is that multiplexes outside the main metros showed an upturn though not as much as the metros. Delhi city and East Punjab have shown best growth as the collections for a multiplex film could have been better on day one.
The Sunday figure can comfortably clear 30 crore nett as the families will come out and if they take to it could be set for a big run.

PK jumped everywhere on Sunday especially at places where business was less than it should have been over the first two days. The mass circuits all showed huge gains be it Gujarat, CP Berar or CI. Some of these circuits were 50% up. The film is breaking records on sundat at places.
The film has set circuit records in a few circuits and it could emerge with highest single opening day ever. Happy New Year in Hindi had grossed around 36.50 crore nett day one and this is PK on Sunday is looking at the range. The Sunday collections are sure to be over 35 crore nett and if the Mumbai and Delhi totals come up at records or near records it will go to 36 crore nett plus
The weekend of the film has cleared 90 crore nett and is the third highest weekend of all time with Sunday challenging to be the highest single day in history..

PK Has Huge Weekend – Phenomenal Trending

PK has had a huge weekend of around 92.50 crore nett. The film had a start which was not up to the mark at places but on Sunday it had extraordinary numbers all over with all circuits at record levels or close to record levels.
The film grossed 26 crore nett on Friday, 29.50 crore nett on Saturday and 37 crore nett on Sunday. The business is being driven by multiplexes with multiplex to single screen ratio much higher when compared to other big blockbusters. The trend of the film is phenomenal with a 11 crore nett gain on Sunday from Friday.
This can happen when a film is very lopsided towards multiplex collections as Saturday and Sunday are best days for multiplex collections. The mass centres were excellent on Sunday and if this continues it will post a huge lifetime total, possibly the biggest ever.

As per Rentrak, PK earned $ 22.1M outside US and if I take $4M other overseas territories, India gross comes to 112 crs, which should be equal to 84 crs Nett (considering 75% of Gross).
Am I missing something here or if 92 crs is correct, other overseas territories are just $2.5 M, seems unlikely.
PK Emerges Biggest Hit Of 2014 – Monday Super Strong

PK emerges the biggest hit of the year as it has a super strong hold on Monday with collections set to come in at around 19 crore nett and may be even hit the 20 crore nett mark. The weekend figures suggested a higher lifetime nett total than Kick but the way it has held on Monday means the key all India distributor share will also go higher.
The business has seen a 30% drop at multiplexes from Friday which has a lot to do with lower ticket prices. The business at single screens has not dropped much and is at the level of Friday as they were not huge on Friday.
The film can challenge the opening week record of Dhoom 3 although Monday will be similar to Dhoom 3 and weekend is lower it may make ground over the Christmas period as this is more of a multiplex film and they do better business in Christmas period so gains can be more Dhoom 3 especially on Christmas Day and the day before.

Aamir is the undisputed No 1 in India, US and pretty much everywhere else and has been since Ghajini.
in US he has overtaken srk very badly in last 3-4 years. but In india i still dont think he is the undisputed No 1. every now and then the weekend record is broken by a big event film. not to forget pk day 1 was lower than expected.
Yes Aamir has overtaken SRK completely in US. Audiences hold Aamir in very high esteem and there is a perception that his movies are great whether one agrees with that or not. I think that’s true of audiences in India too.
Weekend record or first day record can be broken by any big event movie releasing on a holiday but look at the the final gross of his movies whenever they have been completely commercial.
PK did not look that great from the promos and PK’s first day was not a national holiday. Yeah it’s first day is less than Dhoom 3 but I think it is still more than any other non holiday release apart from Dhoom 3. The trending has been superb despite mixed opinions from people who watched it.
Ghajini was the highest grosser ever and all other movies struggled to come even close till 3I happened. Then 3I was the highest grosser and it took a while for any other movie to cross it. CE was the first to cross 3I’s total and that same year Aamir’s Dhoom 3 becomes the highest grosser ever. Looks like PK will be huge too.

For Salman movies it does not matter who the director is. Dabangg’s director was Abhinav Kashyap who had no credentials and for Bodyguard it was a South Indian director Siddique who had no credentials in the North.
All other stars have had commercial releases too and while their movies may have opened well they are not able to compete with Aamir when it comes to final gross. Dhoom 3 was bad – probably the worst compared to other star’s biggest hits yet it is the highest grosser ever.

I think there is underlying goodwill for Aamir which translates into bigger BO. I know many people (in US) who don’t go for movies generally but would go for an Aamir movie (Aamir ki movie yogi to acchi hogi sentiments).
We may argue but DG and Talaash were not exactly Dhoom3 or Ghajini. For a subject matter there is a finite number of audience. I think Aamir maximizes the reach for the subject matter. And also he has “squatted” Christmans holidays (Like Salman Eid, SRK Diwali).

The drop on Monday is just 20% from Friday collections which has never happened before since films started to record these 20 crore nett plus days.
The film did not start on a record breaking spree and it was Sunday when it came into its own and continued record breaking run on Monday. The records are likely to be broken for sometime yet and may possibly be on for the highest gross ever though the next few days will tell more.

PK is heading for the highest first week total of all time as it set to edge past the 173 crore nett total of Dhoom 3 which was set last Christmas. After five days Dhoom 3 is around 2 crore nett ahead but that lead will be wiped out over the next two days.
The advance bookings are huge for Christmas and it looks like the film will have a better total on Christmas Day than it had on day one. It also helps that PK will not have that weak day after a big holiday which Dhoom 3 had on day seven.

PK is the best film of the year for me yet I didnt want it to outgross kick. PK may set a new benchmark of a 50 crore nett second weekend which would be a first and to put this number into perspective is that only two films have crossed 50 crore nett in the whole second week.
The film has grossed a huge 13 crore nett as per early estimates on its eight day and this gives it a shot of getting 50 crore nett in its second weekend. The film did not have that huge start with only South India being up to expectations on day one but from Sunday when the family audiences came the film has broken records everywhere.The fall from day one is likely to be around 50%.
The film is on a dream run now and on course to set records in most circuits including Mumbai where 3 Idiots still holds the all time record. A few of the smaller circuits do not look like hitting record levels at the moment but if it goes on a run into week four and week five then record totals could happen everywhere.

PK grossed a record 94.50 crore nett in week two taking its two week business to 276 crore nett. The second week business was around 30 crore nett higher that the previous record holder Dhoom 2. The film fell a little short of 100 crore nett in week two which would have been the sort of club that very few films will join. The film is looking to cross 300 crore nett before the end of the third week.
The second week collections were the highest ever in all circuits of India. The drop in week two was 48% with Delhi/UP and East Punjab showing an even better hold as collections dropped a little over 40%.The collections in Mumbai have crossed 90 crore nett.
The records will be more difficult to come by now. It can get a new third week record which stands at a little over 30 crore nett but it will difficult to beat this record by the margin it achieved the second week record. .

New Releases Dull PK Remains Strong

The two new releases Mumbai Can Dance Saalaa and Take It Easy opened to very dull collections of 0-5%. It continues the tradition of the first releases of the year being duds. You have to go back to the 80’s when any of the first releases of the year did well.
PK has continued its strong run into the third week and looking at the collections in the morning show of the third Friday it seems that the film will set a new record for third week collections and hit the 300 crore nett mark on Monday with an outside chance of getting there on by the end of business on Sunday.
Ugly released last week managed to hold steady on the weekdays as the four weekday business was similar to the weekend but with collections of just 3 crore nett apprx in week one its still a huge flop.

PK grossed around 6.25 crore nett on its third Friday taking its total to over 283 crore nett. The film should hit the 300 crore nett mark before the end of business on Sunday.
There is a bigger drop in the third week than the second week as the third Friday has dropped around 56% from the previous one while the second Friday had dropped 45%. As the collections are lower there is a chance of higher jumps on weekdays so a 25 crore nett third weekend is a possibility and with that a third week record will be assured.
The lifetime business of the film is looking to finish in the 330-340 crore nett range with a distributor share of 160-165 crore.

PK grossed a little over 41 crore nett in its third week taking its three week total to a huge 319 crore nett. The film has set a new third week record by a margin beating the 30.50 crore nett of Three Idiots. The third week total is bigger than most films second week with only 4-5 films managing to over 40 crore nett in the second week.
The film has gone over 100 crore nett in Mumbai, over 60 crore nett in Delhi/UP and over 30 crore nett in East Punjab. These three circuits will be contributing over 200 crore nett by the end of its run.
The collections did slow towards the end of the third week at many places but that is expected considering the run it has had for the last few weeks. The lifetime total should finish around the 340 crore nett mark..

The start of the fourth week is below record pace but still it is only behind one film 3 Idiots. So its likely to record the second highest fourth week total ever adding to the record totals of week one, week two and week three.
The film should show a good jump on Saturday as that is what happens when an established film drops due to a new release. The film is now doing its best business in Delhi/UP which is collecting more than Mumbai circuit.

PK Footfalls To Stay Below 3 Idiots

The footfalls of PK will stay below 3 Idiots though have gone past Dhoom 3 in the fourth weekend. 3 idiots had footfalls of 2.8 crore plus in 2009 while Dhoom 3 was 2.55 crore plus last year. PK will finish somewhere in the middle of the two.
It seems that having more than 3 crore ticket sold is a tough ask while 4 crore looks an impossible task. PK had a huge average ticket rate in the first week of 207 at multiplexes in the first week while second week came down to 181 and third week is down to the normal 155. The footfalls in two weeks were around 2.2 crore and in three weeks it has similar footfalls to Dhoom 3.
In two weeks PK had recorded the same number of footfalls achieved by Ek Tha Tiger but that had nett business of 186 crore while PK in two weeks grossed 277 crore nett. A difference of 90 crore nett in collections but same amount of tickets sold. There will be a huge difference in the average multiplex ticket with Ek Tha Tiger being at 150 and PK heading for 195. The ratio of single screen business is also less for PK. The festive period and the content working meant ticket rates could be kept at higher levels for longer. It was on the third Monday that they were at regular rates. The gap in business between the festive event films and other major releases will get wider as ticket rates can be pushed higher for the festive releases be it for three days, a week or even longer when content is there like PK.
Still put into perspective, a Hum Aapke Hain Kaun would be grossing 650 crore nett on the ticket rates at P.K. Just like North America where the biggest recent hits like Avatar or The Avengers compare badly with the biggest hits ever like Gone With The Wind and Star Wars, its a similar story in India.
Note – The 650 crore nett of Hum Aapke Hain Kaun is not the adjusted nett gross of the film. It is the adjusted figure on the ticket rates of P.K. The average ticket rate for 2014 will be much lower than the rate of P.K.

PK grossed 2.50-2.75 crore nett in its fifth weekend to take its lifetime total close to around 334 crore nett. The drop in business is a little less than last week. It is rare for a big release to go into the fifth week and be collecting in crores. The last time a wide release grossed over 1 crore nett in the fifth weekend was Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.
If the film trends the same way next week then it may reach 340 crore nett but Baby will be releasing so there is a possibility of a bigger fall.
The Mumbai total for the film is over 103 crore nett and the Delhi/UP total has crossed 65 crore nett.

PK Hits 600 Crore Worldwide

PK has finally hit the 600 crore mark worldwide after 32 days. It had looked the film will go past the 600 gross mark easily but the business slowed acrossed the globe in the last ten days or so.
Still it has become the first film to cross 600 crore wordwide and beats the Dhoom 3 figure of 540 crore. The gross (GBOC) in India is 442 crore and Overseas the film has grossed 159 crore for a total of 601 crore. It is looking at a 610 crore Worldwide finish and could add more in Overseas later if it goes to other markets in the second phase.
The top five worldwide grossers now are PK, Dhoom 3, Chennai Express, 3 Idiots and Kick.

The fifth week total is the seventh highest of all time and since 2010 only Aashiqui 2 has the higher fifth week total. 3 Idiots has the highest fifth week total of all time of 9.75 crore nett plus.
The drop in the fifth week is 66%. the film probably add another 2 crore nett for a finish around the 338 crore nett. It will mean a 30% higher total than previous record holder Dhoom 3 though footfalls will only 7% more.
The multiplex business is extraordinary as the film is the first film to cross 200 crore nett from all India multiplexes as the final multiplex total is set for a huge 275 crore nett and distributor share of nearly 125 crore.

The Overseas business has gone to $41 million which is 250 crore apprx and the India gross business is around 450 crore. It became the first film to hit 600 crore Worldwide and not has also hit the 700 crore benchmark. Dhoom 3 the previous record holder grossed around 535 crore Wordwide
The China business is showing no signs of stopping with $20 million being the target now.
