My favourite scene from Oh My God!

Saw OMG twice in a single day. Brilliant film. The best film of 2012. Climax is excellent. 9/10.

Would have given it 10/10 but I would have liked a more subtle reference of God via Akshay’s character.

Here is my favourite scene from the film. It presents the gist of the film .Pareshs acting is superb. akshays voiceover ,the BGM and the way it ends ….paresh throwing the amulet in the air and it lightens up with a brilliant quote from Bhagvad Geeta. amazing stuff.
For those who have not seen the film so far, don’t watch it.

    Good choice Babaji…

Here’s what I wrote in my review

    ******SPOILERS*********
I loved the last 10 minutes of the film a lot. It was almost like the film had 4 quick climaxes in succession:
    1) When Paresh makes the junta realizes about how they are going from one god to another
    2) When Mithun talks about god loving vs god fearing people
    3) When God makes Paresh realizes that he is insider everyone and he should not look for a specific form for a god
    4) When God makes paresh realizes that a locket (even though it was held by god himself) does not mean , anything. Its the truth he should hold onto, not a locket.

    *****END of SPOILERS******

yes suprabh. actually most scenes from this movie can be posted as SOTW and essays can be written on each of them, just like the case is for good films . Its a bold film made in a very intelligent way .I had read your review on NG before seeing the film and i initially thought you overrated it. But you were right. it really deserves that rating. Also feel this was the best choice to be sent to oscars.Either this or PST.not barfi.

Excellent points suprabh LOL at your srk comment.

      @Baba,

      Good choice of scene.

Agree with you that “Akshay moving that amulet like Krishna’s chakra, sitting in the couch like Him, always smiling and most of all his opening scene i found a bit OTT. His charaterisation could have been a bit subtle. He could have been shown as a normal guy who did those things without giving the audiences any hint.”

I think it would have added intrigue to the movie and made the movie better.

  2. Baba Ji 11 years ago

The only thing that i felt, could have been improved was akshays scenes at some places. Akshay moving that amulet like Krishna’s chakra, sitting in the couch like Him, always smiling and most of all his opening scene i found a bit OTT. His charaterisation could have been a bit subtle. He could have been shown as a normal guy who did those things without giving the audiences any hint. With that setting and then this climax,it would make the film a perfect 10/10 for me.Nonetheless a great film no doubt.I will always respect akshay for producing this film.

  3. Ritz 11 years ago

Havent seen this movie but interested in one bit, based on which I will decide weather to watch it or not.

@Baba or Sup – someone (I think serenzy) commented that this goes soft of ppl like Sai Baba (is inspired from him? ) is it true?

    • Suprabh 11 years ago

      Ritz,

It has nothing to do in support of Sai baba…In fact it asks you not to go to any temple.

      • Ritz 11 years ago

        OK.

“In fact it asks you not to go to any temple”

hmm….half baked / one sided view kind of like Deewar, Amitabh Bachchan?

Anyways, I guess talking nonsense here without seeing the film is useless. But it still doesn’t excite me enough. 🙁

        • Baba Ji 11 years ago

ritz – you have been an atheist.you will relate to this movie more than anyone.

          • Ritz 11 years ago

Ok 🙂 I will watch this surely now. But maybe after next 7-8 days as am busy now.

( If I dont like it, I will not waste an opportunity to dislike this post of yours 😛 )

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

ritz – the film has a very broad outlook. it doesnt really attack any particular religion or religious leader. But yes, I think it questioned those nirmal babas and ramdev babas .You admire ramdev baba so better watch out for this one 😀

      • Ritz 11 years ago

Yes, I admire ramdev baba as he has a scientific base for Yoga – he doesnt do any stupid miracles (sans all his talk in last one year and he was on wrong side as mighty Gandhis made him a villain via paid media) and in fact I think only real Baba was Gadge Baba.

But I despise Sai Baba like people who did nothing but some stupid miracles.

        • Baba Ji 11 years ago

i was talking about the “anshan” that he did recently.there is a good sequence in the film about it.

          • Ritz 11 years ago

For me he is s a Baba for what he did towards improving health of nation and promoting Yoga for common people.
All other political topics I dont follow.

        • Ritz 11 years ago

And I have a feeling from promos and reviews that film is just scratching the surface but not reaching to the depth of the subject …not harming anyone seriously as truth is harsh – and doing all the goody goody talk which is acceptable by all.

But anyways….as I said . I have to see the film myself. hmm…hopefully I gather patience and interest in this ….

          • Baba Ji 11 years ago

To ppl who have unquestionable belief in amulets and idol-worshipping,this film is quite bold, even offensive. To others ,its a great film.To an atheist, pareshs character will be most relatable. He is a very practical and logical man from start to end.

  4. Ritz 11 years ago

Another thing is this sounds like a new topic for a Bollywood movie watcher but is quite a lot shown in regional movies – especially Marathi Films and Stage plays if not in films. I read somewhere that this is based on a play which was popular in marathi/gujrati .

I just hope if matches its hype and meets my expectations. I had liked Deool this year and i hope it comes close to that.

  5. Serenzy 11 years ago

I Particulrly Liked Many Dialogues and Hidden Messages in the Movie.

    Ritz,

    Great review @babaJi
& @Ritz its a very different kind of cinema if You ‘ve an athiest, then I’m sure,OmG is going to attract you. A must watch!!

    • Baba Ji 11 years ago

thanks aditya. yes every atheist much watch it. Its a film for them actually.

  10. Baba Ji 11 years ago

The reason i give unconditional support to OMG is not bcos it is just a very well made film. its bcos its effect goes beyond..it attacks the notion of finding God in materialistic things. i hv seen ppls perception and mentality change after watching it . if more ppl watch it and get influenced by it, incidents like babri masjid riots might never happen in future. ppl wil become less fanatics in life.that acc to me is the biggest victory for any film,if it does something socially.

  11. Baba Ji 11 years ago

a story related to the message of OMG

A little boy wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his suitcase with a bag of potato chips and a six-pack of root beer and started his journey.

When he had gone about three blocks, he met an old man. He was sitting in the park, just staring at some pigeons. The boy sat down next to him and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his root beer when he noticed that the old man looked hungry, so he offered him some chips. He gratefully accepted it and smiled at him.

His smile was so pretty that the boy wanted to see it again, so he offered him a root beer. Again, he smiled at him. The boy was delighted! They sat there all afternoon eating and smiling, but they never said a word.

As twilight approached, the boy realized how tired he was and he got up to leave; but before he had gone more than a few steps, he turned around, ran back to the old man, and gave him a hug. He gave him his biggest smile ever..

When the boy opened the door to his own house a short time later, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She asked him, “What did you do today that made you so happy?” He replied, “I had lunch with God.” But before his mother could respond, he added, “You know what? He’s got the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen!”

Meanwhile, the old man, also radiant with joy, returned to his home. His son was stunned by the look of peace on his face and he asked, “dad, what did you do today that made you so happy?”

He replied “I ate potato chips in the park with God.” However, before his son responded, he added, “You know, he’s much younger than I expected.”

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime! Embrace all equally!

After rationalist Narendra Dabholkar’s killing, Maharashtra govt clears anti-superstition ordinance

The murder of renowned rationalist Narendra Dabholkar, which has led to a massive outpouring of grief and anger in Maharashtra, has prompted the state government to push an anti-superstition law that he had championed for years.

The state government today cleared an Anti-Superstition and Black Magic Ordinance to replace a Bill that had been approved by the cabinet but had lapsed before it could be taken up in the assembly. The Bill has been pending for eight years.

Among other things, the law seeks to make it punishable for self-styled godmen to prey on people by offering rituals, charms, magical cures and propagating black magic.

Dr Dabholkar had relentlessly campaigned for a law against superstition and black magic in the face of criticism from right-wing groups who had called him “anti-Hindu”.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, who attended Dr Dabholkar’s funeral in his native place in Satara, yesterday compared the murder to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

“The way Gandhiji’s voice was suppressed, the same way Dr Narendra Dabholkar’s views and its power were killed by people who did not agree with it. The government will find out the killers and their sources,” the Chief Minister said.

Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, was shot dead on January 30, 1948, by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu activist who opposed his teachings on non-violence.

The comparison by Mr Chavan could rattle the groups that had fought Dr Dabholkar on the anti-superstition Bill.

Two such groups, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and the Sanatan Sanstha, issued statements expressing shock at the 70-year-old activist’s killing.

A Sanatan Sanstha spokesperson said though they had serious differences with Dr Dabholkar, there was no enmity. “We had opposed Dabholkar by all democratic means for his atheist thoughts,” he said.

Sunil Ghanavat, convener of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, too admitted that they had differences with the activist over the anti-superstition bill.

But he also said that the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti opposed the Bill “through the mediums of discussions on TV channels, agitations in a lawful manner”.

“Debate on this bill has been going on for past six-seven years,” he said. He added that they would continue to oppose the bill, but in a democratic manner.

Narendra Dabholkar was shot dead by two men on a motorcycle while he was out for a morning walk near Omkareshwar Temple in Pune on Tuesday. The attackers shot him at point blank range in the head and chest and escaped. The police are yet to make arrests in the case but have released the sketch of a suspect, believed to be around 25-years-old. Cops are also studying footage from closed circuit television or CCTV cameras in the area.

The Maharashtra government has announced a Rs. 10 lakh reward for any information on the murder and said it was a “planned killing.”

Kuch nahi hoga. The people who killed Dabholkar will be out in open.

        • they will get clean chit from supreme court. they use that chit to blow and wipe themselves off later 😉

          • Chaalu-Chaiwaala 10 years ago

True, apparently police was present at the spot and all around but they didnt take any action when the bullets were fired at him and they were inactive for 1.5-2 hrs. If they wished they could have tracked the attackers.

I think Dabholkar’s mistake was he denied all police protection even after receiving number of threats. THe movement suffers because of this. I think Kejriwal should also take a lesson from this – accept the protection. Movement should not suffer.

Asaram Bapu booked for alleged sexual assault on minor

Spiritual leader Asaram Bapu has been booked for allegedly sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl who has been staying in a hostel operated by the godman’s trust in Jodhpur, after a complaint was lodged by the minor, Delhi Police said today.

The 15-year-old had submitted a written complaint against Asaram Bapu at Kamala Market police station in central Delhi on Tuesday evening.

The girl, who is from Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh, has alleged in her complaint that she was molested by Asaram Bapu in his ashram in Jodhpur. She has also said that when her father brought her to Delhi to meet the godman at a camp earlier this month, he left without meeting them. Her father then lodged a complaint with the police.

Her father insisted that the case should be registered in Delhi as he feared that it will be suppressed in Rajasthan. A Delhi Police official said a case was registered but was later transferred to Jodhpur.

Asaram Bapu, who has a large following, was earlier in the news after Gujarat Police filed a case of attempted murder against him and two others. He was also accused of illegal land-grabbing in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

After the December 16, 2012 gang-rape of a 23-year-old student in a Delhi bus, Asaram Bapu attracted much attention for his remark that the victim could have escaped rape if she had called her attackers brothers, and pleaded to be let off.

Local BJP / RSS groups in interiors of Maharashtra are continuing their Hindutva agenda by opposing anti-superstition law in various ways – taking some “varkari sampradaya” ppl with them and trying to malign image of that “varkari” group also – which is formed on no division of caste and creed/even religion.

They are making hoopla that one cant do even Pooja or its hurting Hindu sentiments (the Bill) when Dabholkar was ultra clear in all his statements and stand all his life and was never against faith or religion – he only opposed blind faith / stupid rituals which hurt society.

This is where BJP/RSS sucks the most.

  16. Anjanpur685Miles 11 years ago

Btw, Dabholkar earned lot of enemies in last few years by opposing “khap panchayat” fad which came in Maharashtra from North in recent years. Will not be surprised if ppl who support Khap are real killers – its their regular job anyways.

  17. ank_16n 11 years ago

that’s real problem of indians ‘Speculation’ it result in superstition…………both types of blind faith n one way thinking..!!

    @ank

My parents are active participants of that movement for years (anti-superstition) so I get daily updates on that even if I dont live in the state.

BJP doesnt show their face upfront in interiors – but its one of the groups which supports these activities.

  19. Anjanpur685Miles 11 years ago

Just for an example – people do travel to “Pandharpur” on feet / walk all the way from many places in Maharashtra/ carry “palanquin” etc…just like “sabrimala” (just that sabrimala is “rich & exclusive” in terms of rituals and religion whereas Pandharpur is for everyone)…..Local BJP/rss groups threatened to “varkari” ppl (devotees) that they will not allow them to pass through the villages carrying their ‘palanquin’ if they agree to Dabholkar’s sentiments !!

Its again a coincidence. My son was telling me what he learn t in school on friday.

He said (as they told him in school) there was a president of America – whos father was an african and whose mother indonesian. The young boy had Indian neighbors..

      The boy is Obama.

Now I was explaining this to my kid..

…That what u believe in is a blind faith …not real story…Obama did NOT get himself rescued from bad dreams because of Hanuman Chalisa – but because he was a sane person at heart.

I did explain to him in a simple way that its NOT hte “Hanuman Chalisa” or some external force which made the little Obama made his bad dreams go away !!

      • Ipman 10 years ago

I dont understand why you need a yantra to make Hanuman help you. why cant someone just recite the chalisa? is that not the better thing to do!

‘Snake Salvation’ Preacher Jamie Coots Dead From Snakebite

“Snake Salvation” star and preacher Jamie Coots has died of a snakebite after refusing medical attention, CNN confirmed.

The Pentecostal preacher was allegedly attacked during a Feb. 15 service with his congregation in Middlesboro, Ky. He was bitten on the right hand, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. Emergency personnel were called to the church around 8:30 p.m., but Coots had already gone home by the time they arrived.

They attempted to treat him at his house and warned him of the dangers, but he refused to go to the hospital. Authorities later received a call indicating he had died.

Coots was the pastor of the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name church in Middlesboro, according to ABC affiliate WATE. He and his family were featured on the National Geographic reality show, “Snake Salvation.”

The reality series focused on believers in a particular Bible passage that suggests poisonous snakebites won’t harm those anointed by God. Coots previously lost half a finger to a bite and was arrested for keeping 74 snakes in his home. Although the snake-handling practice is illegal in most states, it is still goes on in areas like the rural South, CNN noted.

“When you feel the anointing and God moves on you to take up serpents, even if one of ‘em lays fangs into you, you shall not be harmed,” one of the show’s co-stars, Andrew Hamblin, told Buzzfeed in a recent interview.

Indian court asked to rule on whether Hindu guru dead or meditating

The family and followers of one of India’s wealthiest Hindu spiritual leaders are fighting a legal battle over whether he is dead or simply in a deep state of meditation.

His Holiness Shri Ashutosh Maharaj, the founder of the Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan religious order with a property estate worth an estimated £100 million, died in January, according to his wife and son.

However, his disciples at his Ashram have refused to let the family take his body for cremation because they claim he is still alive.

According to his followers, based in the Punjab city of Jalandhar, he simply went into a deep Samadhi or meditation and they have frozen his body to preserve it for when he wakes from it.

His body is currently contained in a commercial freezer at their Ashram.

The late – or living – guru, who was in his seventies, established his sect in 1983 to promote “self-awakening to global peace” and to create a world “wherein every individual becomes an embodiment of truth, fraternity and justice through the eternal science of self-realisation”.

Today the group has thousands of followers around the world and owns dozens of large properties throughout India, the United States, South America, Australia, the Middle East and Europe, including its British headquarters in Hayes, Middlesex.

While he is thought to have died from a heart attack, his devotees believe he has simply drifted into a deeper form of the meditation he promotes as a pathway to self-realisation.

A statement on the group’s website reads: “His Holiness Shri Ashutosh Maharaj ji has been in deep meditative state (Samadhi) since 29th January 2014.”

According to one of his aides, who asked not to be named, “Maharaj has been in deep meditation. He has spent many years meditating in sub-zero temperatures in the Himalayas, there is nothing unusual in it. He will return to life as soon as he feels and we will ensure his body is preserved until then”, he said.

His body is held in a guarded room in a deep freezer on his 100 acre retreat in Nurmahal, Jalandhar, where only a few elders and sect doctors are allowed to enter.

Although Punjab Police initially confirmed his death, the Punjab High Court later dismissed its status report and local governmental officials said it was a spiritual matter and that the guru’s followers cannot be forced to believe he is dead.

Now his wife and son have filed a court application calling for an investigation into the circumstances of his death and for his body to be released for cremation.

His son Dilip Jha, 40, claims his late father’s followers are refusing to release his body as a means of retaining control of his vast financial empire.

Paresh Rawal to co-produce OMG! Oh My God sequel with Akshay Kumar

Legendary actor and Member of Parliament Paresh Rawal in an interview to Bollywood Hungama disclosed that the script for the sequel of his path breaking film OMG! Oh My God has been locked. He disclosed that the film will be co-produced by him and Akshay Kumar. Umesh Shukla will direct the film. Rawal is of the opinion that the huge success of OMG is a testimony to the fact that people at large don’t support blind faith of any kind.

Paresh Rawal also disclosed that he shall be playing the lead in the biopic of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The biopic has been approved by Mr. Modi himself and the film will roll in February 2015. Mr. Rawal says that the journey of Mr. Modi is phenomenal and by becoming the Prime Minister he has just reached the interval of his career. The phenomenal work that he shall achieve in the days to come will change the course of Indian history.

With the added responsibility of becoming a Member of Parliament, Rawal feels that he will still continue to devote enough time to his films and theatre. Theatre for him is extremely dear and he considers it the most stimulating art form.
