Truth Official Synopsis
60 Minutes II had aired an investigative report, produced by Mapes and reported on-air by Rather, that purported to reveal new evidence proving that President George W. Bush had possibly shirked his duty during his service as a Texas Air National Guard pilot from 1968 to 1974. But within days after the story broke, George W. Bush’s military service record was no longer the focus of media and public scrutiny. Instead, it was 60 Minutes, Mapes, and Rather who were under question: the documents supporting their investigation were denounced as forgeries, and the 60 Minutes staff was accused of shoddy journalism or, perhaps worse, accused of being duped. Eventually, Mapes would lose her job and reputation. Dan Rather would step down prematurely as CBS News anchor. How did attention end up focused on the journalists who questioned the official version of the story? How did the minutiae of document typefaces, line breaks, and superscripts become seemingly more important to the national discourse than the question of whether the President had failed to fulfill his military obligations? Have journalistic integrity and independence been fundamentally altered in today’s newsrooms and boardrooms? TRUTH is based on Mary Mapes’ memoir Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power.

The movie is based on the Rathergate incident and is Mary Mapes version of what happened. Now people either believe that the report was true or not based on their political leanings.

Here is a very critical piece on the movie which says that Mary Mapes got fooled but that she is still insisting that she was right and indulging in conspiracy theories.

Truth: A Terrible, Terrible Movie About Journalism

Here are a couple of positive pieces on Mary Mapes and the movie.

The Dark Truth in the Movie ‘Truth’

The Flawed Report on Dan Rather

Some scenes are excellent like the scene where the source is being interviewed and where Betsy West keeps giving Dan Rather similar questions to ask or the scene where Mike Smith lashes out about CBS’s parent company Viacom being saved by Bush or the scene where Mary Mapes is being questioned by the panel. The best scene of the movie is the scene where Bill Burkett’s wife lashes out at Mary Mapes.

Cate Blanchett is excellent as Mary Mapes, the producer at CBS News who won a Peabody Award in 2005 for producing the CBS News segment that broke the Abu Ghraib Iraq military prison abuse story. Robert Redford is very good as Dan Rather, the anchor of CBS Evening News for 24 years. Topher Grace is good as Mike Smith, the freelance journalist and researcher. Elisabeth Moss is good as Lucy Scott, the journalism professor and freelance researcher who worked as an associate producer on the Bush-Guard story. Dennis Quaid is good as Lt. Colonel Roger Charles, who worked with CBS News as a military consultant and investigator. Bruce Greenwood is very good as Andrew Heyward who was then the President of CBS News. Rachael Blake is very good as Betsy West the then senior vice president at CBS News.

The movie is ok until the telecast of the report but it gets very interesting and engrossing once the report starts getting questioned. Suddenly the sources start backtracking and the person who provided the Kilian documents admits he lied about how he got them. The movie is a good movie on journalism whether one agrees with Mary Mapes or not.

Ok now this one i will watch soon.

saw borat a 2006 movie. Timepass wacky comedy very wacky. Was fun

I liked Borat in part. Some of it was hilarious and some of it was very gross.

The Borat character is from his TV Show – Da Ali G Show. I used to watch that show and he used to ask the most absurd questions to senators and astronauts and so on. Try watching clips from that show you might like it.

If you liked Borat you may also like the movie Dictator. My comment on Dictator.

“The first 15-20 minutes till he comes to New York were absolutely hilarious but then the movie was hilarious at places but not so at many places. The humor was offensive, crude and politically incorrect and If one does not mind that they can enjoy the movie.

Its basically a satire of all the dictators and there are some sarcastic dialogues about the US. Some of the dialogues are very funny.

Sacha Baron Cohen was excellent. Anna Faris was a bit annoying. She was doing her usual dumb role in Scary Movie series. Ben Kingsley has a small role. Jason Mantzoukas as Nadal the scientist was good too.”

    Full Metal Jacket
Stanley Kubrick’s take on the Vietnam War follows smart-aleck Private Davis (Matthew Modine), quickly christened “Joker” by his foul-mouthed drill sergeant (R. Lee Ermey), and pudgy Private Lawrence (Vincent D’Onofrio), nicknamed “Gomer Pyle,” as they endure the rigors of basic training. Though Pyle takes a frightening detour, Joker graduates to the Marine Corps and is sent to Vietnam as a journalist, covering — and eventually participating in — the bloody Battle of Hué.

The movie was nominated for an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. The first half of the movie is excellent and its very entertaining with all the insults by the drill sergeant and the singing of vulgar songs. But once the sergeant character part is over the movie turns into an ordinary war movie. Apocalypse Now and Platoon are the best Vietnam war movies ever made and the second half of the movie feels like a bad wannabe of those movies. The movie is rated 8.3 on IMDB and I think its just because of Kubrick fanboys.

Matthew Modine was good in the first half of the movie but in the 2nd half of the movie he was just ok. Lee Ermey was excellent as Sergeant Hartman and I think he should have at least been nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Vincent D’Onofrio was excellent as the fat Private Lawrence who is nicknamed as Pyle. Adam Baldwin was good as as Animal Mother.

    Inshallah, Kashmir
Home to a syncretic and mystical culture, its heritage of learning, its arts and craft – crucible of Buddhism, Hinduism and Sufi-Islam. Its verdant forests, snow-capped peaks. Its guileless, beautiful people. This is the story of a conflict that has ruptured much of that – leaving, in its wake, a people brutalised by two-decades of militancy and its terrible response. This film about the surreality of living in terror within India – a secular, democratic, republic.

Excellent documentary on Kashmir. It has interviews with ex-militants, Kashmiri rape victims, Kashmiri people with disappeared family members, many ordinary Kashmiri villagers who suffered at the hands of the militants and/or the armed forces, a Kashmiri Pandit whose grandfather was killed and a Kashmiri Pandit couple who were kidnapped by the militants.

It won the Best Investigative Film at the 60th National Film Awards. I think everyone who liked Haider will like this one.

    Pride and Prejudice
Sparks fly when spirited Elizabeth Bennet meets single, rich, and proud Mr. Darcy. But Mr. Darcy reluctantly finds himself falling in love with a woman beneath his class. Can each overcome their own pride and prejudice?

Loved it. Very good movie. Thanks to @FS for the recco.

The movie is based on Jane Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice. I had watched the TV series starring Colin Firth many years back and loved it. The movie did feel like it was skimming or fast forwarding through the story at times but then it was just 2 hrs long whereas the TV series was 5 and a half hours long.

Keira Knightley was excellent as Elizabeth and she looked gorgeous. She was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress. Matthew Macfadyen was excellent as Darcy. Rosamund Pike was good as Jane and looked pretty but not as pretty as Keira. According to the novel Jane is supposed to be more pretty than Elizabeth. Donald Sutherland was good as the father. Brenda Blethyn was good as the mother. Judi Dench was excellent as Lady Katherine.

I mentioned above that Keira was too pretty for the role and I was reading the trivia section on IMDB and came across this.

“Joe Wright was not initially keen on Keira Knightley playing Elizabeth, believing her to be too attractive. He changed his mind upon meeting her, deciding her tomboyish attitude would be perfect for the part. Or, as she tells it on The Graham Norton Show (2007) : “He initially thought I was too pretty, but then he met me and said ‘Oh, no you’re fine!’.”

When I was watching the movie I felt that Keira’s hair looked like a modern smaller hair cut and this explains that.

“Keira Knightley was preparing for her role in Domino (2005) while she was filming this, and had already cut her hair. She had to wear a wig during the last few weeks of filming and long sleeves to hide her muscles.”

And I did not realize that it was Carey Mulligan as Kitty. Did not know that this was her first movie.

I have seen this movie multiple times and so the series. Having loved it, i like series more than the movie because series is more elaborate version of the movie and yet enchanting.

    Brothers
Two estranged, street-fighting brothers square off against each other in a mixed martial arts tournament.

Its the remake of Warrior with more or less the same story but with some additions and changes. Here they are step brothers and the mother gets killed by the father accidentally and the elder brother hates his father for that which is fine but he also suddenly starts to hate the younger brother. In the original the younger son hates his father and he is supposed to have ran away with his dying mother and took care of her but here the elder son is the one who hates the father and the younger son is shown to be fine with his father.

Its ok as a Bollywood movie but having seen Warrior and having liked it a lot can’t help saying that this is a bad remake. There is just too much cheesiness with the commentary during the fight scenes and Kulbhushan Kharbanda/students cheering sequences and the TV reporter scenes. The best thing about Warrior was Tom Hardy’s character and his acting and his awesome fight sequences. Here they turn Sidharth Malhotra’s character into pretty much a loser.

Akshay Kumar is good as David the elder brother but was disappointed with his fight scenes. They should have used his martial art skills and made his fight sequences awesome. In the original Joel Edgerton gets pounded a lot and I had mentioned that “One thing I did not like was that they took rooting for the underdog to a whole new level. The underdog keeps getting pounded but he still wins. I wished that part was handled better.” They kept it almost the same for Akshay’s character. When you have changed part of the story why can’t you change Akshay’s character to better use his martial art skills?

Sidharth Malhotra was not bad as Monty but he was clearly miscast in this role. He has no martial art skills and he does not have any great physique either. And they changed his character to include a fight scene where he loses and he also gets thrashed quite a bit in the main fight sequences. This was a role which would have been perfect for Vidyut Jamwal with his martial art skills.

Jackie Shroff was good in the early part as the drunkard but he hammed a lot in the later parts of the movie especially with his stupid cheering for Akshay. Jacqueline was ok in the few scenes she was.

The movie is way too long too and it feels exhausting at the end.

Suits – Its in fifth season and I thought I won’t be able to complete even a single season in a week but ended watching all 5 seasons up-date and waiting for the 13th episode of season 5. This series about corporate law firm is absolutely brilliant. Indian TV shows can produce something on similar line. Highly Recommended!!!

    The Hateful Eight
Six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Demian Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all…

Liked it but found out that it is copied from a TV show. Its very leisurely paced and quite long. At first its difficult to understand with so many characters. Around the climax the movie became very interesting like a nice suspense thriller but the ending was tame.

Samuel L. Jackson was excellent as always and he is the star of the show. Kurt Russell was very good too. Jennifer Jason Leigh was excellent too and she deserves the Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress that she got. Tim Roth was good too. Michael Madsen does not have much of a role and am not sure why he even agreed to the part. Bruce Dern was very good too. Channing Tatum is good too in a small role.

The background score by Ennio Morricone is excellent and he has deservingly been nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Score. The movie has also been nominated for Best Cinematography. The few outdoor scenes are good but most of the movie is shot indoor and there is nothing great about that.

Hi cr, yes i finished both Mr. Robot and Narcos few months back. Found them very good, especially Mr. Robot. The lead actor has acted brilliantly.

Finished 1st season of Better call Saul as well. Odenkirk is superb and so is Jonathan Banks, the guy who plays Mike. Give it a go if you haven’t.

Arsenal, heart says we will win the title. Head says we are going to bottle it. Playing Leicester on Sunday, a must win. If we loose its over and if we win we are still in the hunt. The good part is we are slowly getting the players back and we are still thereabout in the title chase while in previous seasons we would have fallen away from the top spot. But Sunday is a must win.

    Breaking Bad
Mild-mannered high school chemistry teacher Walter White thinks his life can’t get much worse. His salary barely makes ends meet, a situation not likely to improve once his pregnant wife gives birth, and their teenage son is battling cerebral palsy. But Walter is dumbstruck when he learns he has terminal cancer. Realizing that his illness probably will ruin his family financially, Walter makes a desperate bid to earn as much money as he can in the time he has left by turning an old RV into a meth lab on wheels.

I am not a fan of TV shows because unlike a movie you have to invest too much time into it to know what will happen at the end. But seeing that people are into TV shows a lot nowadays and as sometimes I can’t decide on which movie to watch and end up watching nothing I thought I will watch a TV series instead.

Finished watching Season 1. It took some effort to get interested but have to say it is engrossing and I kept watching the next episode to know what’s going to happen.

It has a interesting plot for sure of a dying chemistry teacher selling meth but then some of it is a little bit of a stretch.

Bryan Cranston is excellent as Walter White. Aaron Paul is good as his partner. Anna Gunn is a bit irritating as the wife. Dean Norris is good as the cop brother-in-law. Betsy Brandt is good too. RJ Mitte is good as the handicapped son.

Finished Episode 4 of Season 2.

While the show is interesting I have to say the show is getting very irritating. How come everything goes bad every time they do something? Not a single thing goes right. Its like Murphy’s law.

The wife’s character is very annoying. I just can’t stand her.

When Jesse was choking Walter White I had the same feeling which I had when watching One flew over the Cuckoo’s nest that is I wanted Jesse to choke him to death.

        • cr7 8 years ago

Well , they’re not professional criminals initially . More of a outsider in the big meth business .Hence the troubles . Skyler may be one of the most hated characters in TV .

          • Author
            sputnik 8 years ago

I understand that but the writers should have let some of their plans succeed at least for a while before they run into trouble.

May be I am talking from a movie watching point of view where good things happen to the protagonists for a while till things start to go wrong in the climax . I guess a TV show needs to have lot more drama and lot more instant changes.

Wow did not know that Skyler was one of the most hated characters in TV. Glad I am not alone 🙂

          • cr7 8 years ago

With the introduction Saul and Gus’s character you’ll see jess and walt operating in a more organized way . They’ll still face troubles though . Bigger but not so frequently .

I liked Season 3 a lot but I am not liking Season 4 that much. I am watching Episode 7 of Season 4 right now.

I hate that Skyler character and she is being given too much importance and screen time this season. The whole car wash business part is damn annoying. She acts like she knows everything and is telling others even Saul what to do and then when she doesn’t know how to do something she falls back to the whole self righteous victim crap.

Actually as the seasons progress Walt has become more psycho and unlikable. Jesse has always been someone who creates trouble and does stupid stuff but he is at least somewhat likable.

I think Mike and Saul’s characters are likable. Even Gus is good with his composure.

Finished watching Breaking Bad. Its definitely one of the best TV shows ever. The 5th season was excellent with each episode getting better than the earlier one but I was kind of disappointed with the last two episodes.

I did not like the way the whole thing with Walt, Hank, Jesse and Jack ended at the shootout scene To’hajiilee. I think the show should have ended in that some episode and a character that died in that episode should not have died. After that the last two episodes felt a bit of a drag as it became more about the secondary characters.

Bryan Cranston was excellent throughout the whole TV series. His character became more evil and psycho as the seasons progressed. Always hated Skyler character and so did not care for Anna Gunn’s acting much. Aaron Paul was excellent as the self destructive Jesse with a good heart. Dean Norris was very good as Hank. Betsy Brandt was ok as Marie. RJ Mitte was good as the son Flynn. Bob Odenkirk was excellent as Saul. Giancarlo Esposito was excellent as Gus. Jonathan Banks was excellent as Mike. Did not like Laura Fraser who played Lydia and all the importance her character got in the last few episodes.
Jesse Plemons was good as Todd.

I am not sure if i can provide a review kind of but it was my first series and i loved it. I am big fan may be because it was my first series.
I remember i started watching 4th season and watched till morning and finished it in one go
then 5th season 1st part next day one go till morning.
5th season 2nd part i started at 3am in night and watched till 9 am just leaving the final episode as i had promised my roomie to watch it together.

It was like a world festival when it was getting ended just before the last season. we were literally emotional.. I can talk to someone continuously about BB.

I used to read reviews and got to know that there are more layers than what u see on screen. there are more meaning.

            “Spoiler alert”

I remember there was a line in one of episode -“If you don’t know who I am, then the best course for you will be to tread lightly” This line is said by WW to hank.

I couldn’t get what exactly it meant and i started searching and got to know there are blogs written just for this line and this line can have multiple meaning.

In one of episode, Hank’s wife wear something other than violet and if you watch the seasons closely that Marie have everything in violet all the time. and there were blogs written why she wear anything other than violet, people were finding meanings into that.
At the end their costume designer said that there was no reason , it was just simple she wore it.

I am not sure people were over reading all the time or this time.. but i used to read it.
I and my roomie always used to look for these not on the face details even when the episode used to start. I remember in some of the episodes it starts lil differently like the breaking bad symbol was lil different than some of the other episodes. we were thinking why it is so. This happened when we were watching it 2nd time.

There is a scene when ww is in hospital when they killed tuco (he is acting like he forgot his last 3 days). He is looking at a panting on the wall in which there are 4 people, 1 girl, 1 boy, 1 mother and i father and father is going away. I am not sure what it meant but i guess it meant the family of ww.

anyway was just telling that there may be much more meaning than what it is on face.

    Leap Year
When yet another anniversary passes without a marriage proposal from her boyfriend, Anna (Amy Adams) decides to take action. Aware of a Celtic tradition that allows women to pop the question on Feb. 29, she plans to follow her lover to Dublin and ask him to marry her. Fate has other plans, however, and Anna winds up on the other side of the Emerald Isle with handsome, but surly, Declan — an Irishman who may just lead Anna down the road to true love.

Liked it. Its a good entertaining romantic comedy. Story is nothing new. Its the same old story from It Happened One Night (1934) of a boy meets girl who is going to meet her lover. The movie also reminds of Jab We Met and DDLJ as the first half of those movies were inspired from the same It Happened One Night.

Matthew Goode was very good as Declan and his sarcastic dialogues were very entertaining. Amy Adams was good as Anna.

    The Saint
Based on the popular spy series, this film follows suave international thief Simon Templar (Val Kilmer), who is contracted by Russian oil magnate Ivan Tretiak (Rade Serbedzija) to steal a formula for cold fusion. So Templar, nicknamed “The Saint” because of his use of Roman Catholic saints as aliases, finds scientist Dr. Emma Russell (Elisabeth Shue), seduces her and steals the information. However, because the formula was incomplete, Tretiak now wants to kill Templar and kidnap Russell.

Had watched this movie 8 years ago and loved it back then. But this time it felt a bit silly and dated. Its still watchable and entertaining though.

Val Kilmer was good as the thief with the disguises. Elisabeth Shue looked very pretty and was good. Rade Serbedzija was good as Tretiak.

Rahasya – The movie is inspired by Arushi murder Case atleast till the first 20 min’s or so because from then the plot completely change to fiction from reality but it keeps you engrossed totally. It is one of the best thrillers to come out from Bollywood but unfortunately none of us are aware of it. KK Menon is excellent. Highly Recommended!!

Bangalore days – The movie is a feel good romantic comedy that has deep emotional connect with its viewers. The movie is almost shot in Bangalore and kinda tribute to it. Loved the songs, chemistry, plot and everything about it. Highly Recommended!!!

    Atonement
This sweeping English drama, based on the book by Ian McEwan, follows the lives of young lovers Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley) and Robbie Turner (James McAvoy). When the couple are torn apart by a lie constructed by Cecilia’s jealous younger sister, Briony (Saoirse Ronan), all three of them must deal with the consequences. Robbie is the hardest hit, since Briony’s deception results in his imprisonment, but hope for Cecilia and her beau increases when their paths cross during World War II.

The movie was excellent till the part where Robbie gets arrested but after that it just dragged. And then we find out much of the second half is fictional and that the things shown never really happened. Did not like the ending and Briony’s stupid excuse for creating fiction. Hated the Briony character and what she does to Robbie. The movie does remind somewhat of The Hunt and The English Patient.

James McAvoy was good as Robbie. Keira Knightley looked gorgeous and was good. Saoirse Ronan was very good as Briony.

I actually liked the movie more because the author twisted it from reality to fictional happy ending because thats what audience wants and she even reveals that the fact was contrary to the fiction.

Yes but she was the one who caused the bad ending in their actual lives because of her infatuation and jealousy and scheming. There is no excuse for her falsely accusing Robbie.

If she was trying to atone for the bad stuff she did she should have started by telling the truth but she writes this elaborate fiction with a happy ending to show that her falsehood and lies somehow did not really effect their lives much as they were back together.

Fixed the issue. You should see the comment box to make a regular comment after all the comments and not as a reply. If you don’t see that clear your history.

    Trumbo
In 1947, Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston) was Hollywood’s top screenwriter until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs. TRUMBO (directed by Jay Roach) recounts how Dalton used words and wit to win two Academy Awards and expose the absurdity and injustice of the blacklist, which entangled everyone from gossip columnist Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren) to John Wayne, Kirk Douglas and Otto Preminger. The film also stars Diane Lane, John Goodman, Louis C.K., Elle Fanning, and Michael Stuhlbarg.

The true story of how artists were blacklisted for their political beliefs back in the late 40s and 50s had the potential for a great movie but unfortunately its just an ok movie. It felt more like a made for TV movie.

Bryan Cranston was very good as Trumbo and has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor. Diane Lane was ok as his wife. Helen Mirren was good as Hedda Hopper. Louis C.K. was ok in a small role. Elle Fanning and John Goodman were good. Michael Stuhlbarg was bad as the actor Edward G. Robinson. The actor who played Kirk Douglas was also bad.

    Carol
Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) spots the beautiful, elegant Carol (Cate Blanchett) perusing the doll displays in a 1950s Manhattan department store. The two women develop a fast bond that becomes a love with complicated consequences.

Hated it. Stupid, boring and extremely slow paced movie. There is nothing great about the story. Just because it is a lesbian love story I think it has got the Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Cate Blanchett was good but she acted the same way she acted in Blue Jasmine. You could interchange her scenes from both these movies and you won’t be able to tell the difference. I don’t think she should have been nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for basically playing the same role again. Rooney Mara was ok. There was nothing great about her performance for which she has received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

    The Revenant
While exploring the uncharted wilderness in 1823, legendary frontiersman Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) sustains injuries from a brutal bear attack. When his hunting team leaves him for dead, Glass must utilize his survival skills to find a way back home to his beloved family. Grief-stricken and fueled by vengeance, Glass treks through the wintry terrain to track down John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy), the former confidant who betrayed and abandoned him.

Excellent movie. Its slow paced and its more of a visual movie and does not have many dialogues. So not sure if everyone will like it. It has excellent cinematography and is very well directed. The bear attack scene is excellent.

Leonardo DiCaprio is excellent and I think he will finally win an Oscar for Best Actor. Tom Hardy is excellent too and he has a good chance of winning Best Supporting Actor Oscar too.
