Virat Kohli Breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s Record vs Pakistan in World Cups

Virat Kohli now has the second most ODI hundreds for India after he drew level with Sourav Ganguly’s 22 tons. Sachin Tendulkar holds the world record with 49 centuries.

Cometh the cometh the man. Virat Kohli, who had been dismissed for four successive scores in single digits for the first time in his brilliant ODI career before the World Cup, slammed a 22nd hundred, drawing level with former India captain and opener Sourav Ganguly. Kohli also shared a fluent, 129-run stand for the second wicket with Shikhar Dhawan, who was run out for 73. (Scorecard | Blog)
Kohli now has the second most hundreds in ODIs by an Indian. Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 49 hundreds in his 24-year-old career, is still way ahead of the international pack. Kohli took only 119 balls to reach his fourth international hundred at the Adelaide Oval. Three of them have been scored in Test cricket. Kohli is now only the first non-Australian to achieve the feat at the iconic venue. More importantly, Kohli became the first Indian to score a hundred vs Pakistan in World Cups – the previous highest was Tendulkar’s 98 in South Africa during the 2003 World Cup.
The Adelaide Oval has been a happy hunting ground for Kohli. The 26-year-old was obviously happy with his form here. “I want to wrap up this ground and take it home with me,” he said after his hundred had piled up 300/7 off their 50 overs. India were on course for a bigger total but a five-wicket haul by Wahab Riaz restricted the world champions. But Kohli felt it was still a competitive total.
“The wicket is two-paced and the way Suresh Raina (74 off 56) batted was magnificent. Am happy we got to 300 because it gives us a psychological advantage,” Kohli said. As far as his own form was concerned, Kohli said he was never too worried. “In the tri-series and warm-ups, I was trying to hit too much. Today, I wanted to give myself more time and play the anchor’s role. This knock is really special for me.”
Kohli had been in the form of his life in the Test series vs Australia, hammering four hundreds in four matches. But his run scoring abilities took a sharp dip once the tri-series started and it raised a lot of concern for Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men. To make matters worse for the Delhi dasher, Kohli was shuffled down to N0. 4 in a bid to be protected against the new ball in case of an early wicket. There were several questions asked about the move but certain former players and captains defended the tactics.
However, Kohli batted in his familiar No. 3 slot against Australia and Afghanistan in the World Cup warm-up matches and it was no surprise when Dhoni’s deputy walked in to bat at one-drop when Rohit Sharma perished to Sohail Khan with the scoreboard reading 34/1 in 7.3 overs. Once he was out in the middle, there was no looking back. Kohli was not looking back at his abysmal form and nor was he thinking of the poor shots he had played Down Under so far. Despite lack of runs in the lead-up to India’s title defence, Kohli looked confident and was not scared of taking on Pakistan’s most dangerous strike force, Mohammad Irfan.
Kohli is known to flourish in pressure situations and that is what teammate Suresh Raina was banking on. The left-handed batsman had said his colleagues were not worried about the star batsman’s declining form. In fact it was Raina who came out to bat at the fall of Dhawan’s wicket and stitched another explosive partnership with Kohli. India were cruising and Pakistan’s bowlers failed to show any kind of spark on a flat pitch at the Adelaide Oval. Raina played the perfect role to help Kohli’s dominating mood – he rocked back on the backfoot to punish the pacers and stepped up the gas when Yasir Shah came back into the attack, hammering the leg-spinner for a six to move into the 40s.
Soon after Kohli brought up his hundred, Raina turned on the screws further smashing Shahid Afridi for his third six of the innings to bring up his 34th fifty off a mere 37 balls.
India’s usually strong batting line-up was a cause for concern before the tournament started but Kohli and Dhawan played special knocks to dispel all fears. Now the onus is on the bowlers to come good and make a difference to the World Cup campaign.
This is a crucial match for both teams from the perspective of the World Cup – it also has massive historic connotation as India have never lost to Pakistan in five World Cup matches.

@sputnik – a very interesting comment on azhars contorversial match fixing allegation from our Sunil. personally i think azhar , jadeja never fixed any matches. no court could prove thier allegatioons and thier ban was removed.

Sunil Koelr : Azhar is a simple person.Until 1992 he lived in a gully which is just a kilometer from where I stay. You woudn’t believe that a prominent cricket player stays in that ordinary locality. His house was just bigger than others. And some of my friends actually used to go and meet him when he was at home.I doubt if he was involved in match fixing. The first time I heard about match fixing.I think the world cup 987 semi final was fixed.Azhar scored more than 90 runs in that match.Kapil Dev’s controversial shot started India’s sudden loss of wickets,And other batsmen were out for less than 30 runs.India was in a winning position.ravi Shastri is corrupt fellow. My friend who was also my tenant said ‘you saw how Indian batsman got out’.until then I didnt know. They were paid.I was surprised.I was so young that I didnt know that players take money for getting out.But after many years it looks fixed. After 1992 Azhar shifted to posh area.he might not have been a good captain but thats another thing.

I used to live very close to Azhar’s house too. Yes his house was a small building (ground floor + first floor) in a small gully in Vittalwadi. I have seen him a couple of times near his house. Once he was standing on his balcony and once he was just leaving in his car. His marriage took place in the function hall opposite our gully. The governor attended his wedding and everyone was on the street watching this big event. Azhar moved to Banjara Hills area which is a posh area in Hyderabad sometime in the 90s.

I still remember the 1987 World Cup Semi Final vs England. Gooch scored a century and Gatting a 50. They kept hitting the sweep shot against Maninder almost every ball. Azhar top scored for India with 64. I think India could have won easily if Azhar and Kapil or Azhar and Shastri had stayed there till the end. Azhar got out LBW. After Azhar’s dismissal everyone kept getting out like they used to get out after Sachin’s dismissal in the 90s. Shastri was the last man out. He tried to hit a six and the ball went up in the air and the keeper caught the catch.

I am not sure if the match was fixed. Kapil knew only one way to play. He would either hit a 4/6 or he would get out. And India’s lower order was horrible during the 80s and 90s.

I think Azhar was indeed involved in match fixing and this probably started sometime around mid 90s. Even the CBI report says the same. Azhar used to get caught by the keeper/1st slip or get caught & bowled. It used to look so obvious as if he was giving them catching practice.

Yes he rose to prominence from very humble origins. And I guess he was honest till a certain point – may be till he was living in that small middle class house. But once he moved from there and once he met Sangeeta may be he changed. May be his lifestyle became lavish and may be he became very materialistic and it did not matter to him any more where or how he got the money from.

Azhar may have been acquitted in court but he sullied his reputation forever with his involvement in the match fixing scandal. Now when someone re watches a great knock of his they will wonder whether that match was fixed.

      • Baba 9 years ago

none of the accusations against him have been proved. he has a “clean chit” from court and his ban is revoked . no one can point fingers at him. he is a nationalist and a patriot

        https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/i-have-come-out-clean-and-proven-many-wrong/article4077225.ece

accusations can be made against any player and it doesnt mean anything unless proved in a court of law. i checked the video of ind eng semifinal 1987 and saw the dismissal of last 4 wickets. kiran more and shastris dismissal defnitely looks dicey. the others looks genuine indian tail performance under pressure which is shitting in pants. india needed 55 runs in 56 balls with 5 wickets in hand. wasn’t the most difficult scneario in the world.

        • sputnik 9 years ago

The “clean chit” came a bit too late and that too when he was a Congress MP. So one cannot rule out any political involvement.

As far as the 87 semi final it was a match they should have won. One can’t blame Shastri either because everyone kept getting out at the other end. Maninder was someone who could not score even 1 run to win in the tied test match. So he must have thought only way to win is hit fours and sixes once Maninder was there at the crease.

          • jj 9 years ago

T here are quite a few matches where both Azhar and Jadeja have batted bad and got out cheaply. Most evident being the 96 semi final against Lanka. The manner in which they got out after wasting lots of deliveries is suspicious.
Also the Dhaka finals against Pak, but Ganguly had other plans in that match.

          • sputnik 9 years ago

Yeah the way everyone got out after Sachin’s dismissal in the 1996 WC Semi Final against Lanka looked like match fixing. Azhar got out caught and bowled for a duck and it looked very deliberate. Jadeja also got a duck but his dismissal doesn’t look that deliberate.

Just the other day I was watching the clipping of Ind vs Pak Dhaka final and Azhar’s dismissal looked suspect. Like I said even if Azhar fixed those specific matches or not everything he ever did now is under the scanner.

          • Baba 9 years ago

as i said accusations can be made by anyone. you should check the video on youtube of sachins stupid shot agaisnt mcgrath in 1st over in finalm 2003 wc. there are quite a few australians who say sachin deliberately played it! so these things are said in unhinged manner and without any proper evidences.

azahr got clean chit sooner or later wil not change the fact that he is clean. yes the controversy tarnished his image but if we can give modi a chance bcos of his clean chit, then why cant we forget azahrs controversy and not doubt his intentions?

Kapil Dev’s Interview with Karan Thapar about the match fixing allegations. He breaks down and cries around the 18 minute mark.

  3. Baba 9 years ago

India makes its first and probably the most daunting victory against south africa in a wc. total destruction and decimation of such a big team who were the “favourties” to win the game. couldnt even finish 50 overs lol.Dhoni rocks and now i think India is a definite contender for the title yet again.

  4. Baba 9 years ago

people complain a lot about our Indian skipper dhoni why doesnt he play a quickfire 45 when everyone else has set it up for him. NO he does not bbcos he is capable of something else. he is capable of playing a an innings like today. 45 not out when india were on the verge of an embarassment. on the verge of getting defeated to a far lower rung team. on the verge of becoming a victim of our own batting ego. That is why i support him. Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Ladies and Gentlemen

At least we agree on Dhoni. Only person I will give my life for. I have liked the way he cleaned the mess from Indian dressing room.

This one summarizes everything about him.

“The three ‘KINGS KHAN’ feature on Outlook cover for March 2015 issue”

“The March issue of Outlook features sketches of the three Khans of Bollywood. The magazine quotes, “For 25 years, they have shaped how we lauch and cry, sing and dance, love and live. As Aamir, Salman and Shahrukh turn 50 this year, they hold a mirror to the ethos of a changing India.”
Well, quite true, don’t you think? The Khans are still going strong with interesting releases coming up. While Aamir will be next seen Dangal, SRK will be seen in Fan, Raees and Rohit Shetty’s next. Salman on the other hand will be next seen in Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.”

Excellent prediction by Sachin on which teams will do well in the 2015 World Cup. This video was uploaded on Feb 9, 2015.

Followed the India vs Australia match till the 46th over on cricinfo. At one point it felt like Australia was going to score 360+. India did well to get some wickets and I thought Aus would score 320 or so and India would win.

Woke up this morning to find out that India lost by 95 runs. Disappointed by India’s performance. Saw that Dhoni got run out. Virat should have scored a century and won the match.

Anyway I hope New Zealand wins the final against Australia. Australia has won 4 World Cups so far and I think its time New Zealand wins one.

    • MGT 9 years ago

Anushka is shameless and she should have not gone to Sydney for his match esp when she knows Kohli is an immature player and does not have the temperament to switch off once on filed and keeps doing things to show off.

I feel bad for Dhoni as if team would have played sensible cricket they would have easily made a match out of it if not won it. The pitch was dead and all it needed was patience and sensible play.

      • Anjanpur685Miles 9 years ago

Now how much immature one can get?

If Kohli played well then she going there was worthwhile . Eh??

    • sputnik 9 years ago

This is such an anti climax for the World Cup final. Except for GD Elliott the whole New Zealand team choked and even he is out now. Looks like they won’t reach 200 and Australia will win the World Cup again.

  11. MGT 9 years ago

She was there all throughout the summer and India kept losing and only once she was back , India started to win and regained some of the lost ground and the current streak is all thanks to team focus.

Now when team is doing well, it does not need these kind of distractions in dressing room esp if the player is immature and starts to blow kisses from field and is doing things / making stroke plays to impress. Aussie will eat you alive and that is what happened and they made a minced meat of this young brat.

Further if you go by past incidents , she caused a big rift between Shikhar Dhawan and Kohli when Dhawan called her bandar shaped or remarked something on her puffed lips sometime back. I believe Dhawan charged at Kohli with a knife when Kohli started to abuse him and came to defend his girlfriend. Please do some research on internet and you will have all the links.

    • Anjanpur685Miles 9 years ago

Oh my god. Looks like not only you but the whole indian team is full of weirdos.

I dont need to do research on a circus. Cricket was once a game.

      Peace.

    • sputnik 9 years ago

“Virat Kohli used a knife and he stabbed Shikhar Dhawan. When he recovered, we pushed him out to bat,” joked Dhoni, when asked if Ravi Shastri indeed had to separate the two batsmen as per reports this past week.

The incident in question was the much talked about backing out from batting on the fourth day of the Brisbane Test by Shikhar Dhawan after being hit on the wrist during a net session.

Dhoni had stated that the last-minute shuffling of the order, which required Kohli go ahead of Dhawan, resulted in some unrest in the dressing room.

“These are all stories,” he said on a serious note.

“Stuff like this makes for good reading in tabloid papers and maybe it helps them sell better. Marvel and Warner Brothers should pick them up and make a movie out of it. I don’t know where such stories come from.”

“If someone from the team has actually said this, it will be interesting if you give us the name of that individual.

Because his imagination is really brilliant and he should be working for movie companies and he doesn’t deserve to be in our dressing room because he has created something that hasn’t been there at all,” he added with a dead-pan expression.

Its not weirdos but followed in so many other sports too and there are many instances gf and family is kept out of the theatrics.

    • Anjanpur685Miles 9 years ago

Ok. I didnt mean to be mean on you, I just dont like the game anymore and find it artificial.

I think its a bad practice if this is followed in other sports too. But thats my personal opinion. And when it comes to sports – I am the worst guy one would talk to on that topic 😀 😀 . (nothing against sports – but I dont have the inclination )
