Tanqeed Film Festival: Shatranj Ke Khilari

On Satyajit Ray’s birthday check out the classic Shatranj Ke Khilari.

Synopsis: The East India Company rules much of India; directly or indirectly through ‘treaties of friendship.’ The kingdom of Avadh is under such a treaty of friendship. Its ruler, Nawab Wajid Ali Shah (Amjad Khan), is an indifferent ruler, who prefers arts to the matters of state or politics. Mirza Sajjad Ali (Sanjeev Kumar) and Mir Roshan Ali (Saeed Jaffrey) are two landlords living in the capital city of Lucknow. They do nothing, and are addicted to the game of chess. Mirza’s wife, Khurshid (Shabana Azmi), feels neglected. Mir’s wife, Nafeesa (Farida Jalal) has found solace in a wild love affair with a young nephew. Lord Dalhousie, the Governor General, sends General Outram (Sir Richard Attenborough), the British Resident of Lucknow, to take over Avadh under the pretext of Nawab’s misrule.

The king, Wajid Ali Shah has only two options, either to give up his throne or to fight a battle. Mir and Mirza learn about the British Company’s troops marching towards Lucknow. Scared that they may be called to fight the British forces, they run off to a remote village to continue playing chess.

Had posted some scenes in Scene of the Week and had written a Recco a few years back.

Chhoti Si Baat Inspired/Copied from School for Scoundrels

School for Scoundrels is a 1960 British comedy film inspired by the “Gamesmanship” series of books by Stephen Potter. Henry Palfrey (Ian Carmichael) is a failure in sport and love, and the easy victim of conmen and employees alike. He enrolls at the “School of Lifemanship” in Yeovil, run by Dr. Potter (Alastair Sim), who teaches him how to win in life and get the better of his rival (Terry-Thomas). Chhoti Si Baat has copied almost all scenes from the movie. A few scenes/songs are added and some changes are made like tennis replaced by table tennis or car replaced by bike.

Here is School for Scoundrels

Ek Ruka Hua Faisla Inspired/Copied from 12 Angry Men

“12 Angry Men is a 1957 American drama film adapted from a teleplay of the same name by Reginald Rose. Directed by Sidney Lumet, the film tells the story of a jury made up of 12 men as they deliberate the guilt or acquittal of a defendant on the basis of reasonable doubt. In the United States (both then and now), a verdict in most criminal trials by jury must be unanimous. The film is notable for its almost exclusive use of one set: with the exception of the film’s opening, which begins outside on the steps of the courthouse followed by the jury’s final instructions before retiring, a brief final scene on the courthouse steps, and two short scenes in an adjoining washroom, the entire movie takes place in the jury room. The total time spent outside of the jury room is three minutes out of the full 96 minutes of the movie.” (From Wikipedia)

And here is the almost scene to scene dialogue to dialogue copied Ek Ruka Hua Faisla directed by Basu Chatterjee.

TFF – Hayat Iranian Movie – Not just for kids but for every adult

A beautiful movie about a girl’s determination, dedication, struggle, aspirations, enthusiasm, patience, innocence, her respect towards others called “Hayat” blended so beautifully in an approximate one hour or so… You will get absorbed into the movie such that you may end up reacting to the situations occurring in the movie ending up reflecting your own personality and attitude towards handling such circumstances, situations and conditions.

It doesn’t take much of your time and please do watch it. Most of you will be reminded of those moments in your life where your grand parents or parents use to tell the stories of their struggle, conditions and other aspects of their daily upbringing.

It is not just for the kids but for every adult that displays a practical examples of determination, dedication, discipline and dreams to achieve what they aim.

Every character has performed well but the stand out performance would go to the hayat’s brother. He was excellent in the movie.

It is one of the finest movie that I have come across in past 10 years or so. It’s so simple, beautiful and realistic. Rating 5/5
