Sanket’s Review: “David” is perfect example of opportunity lost.

Cast: Neil Nitin Mukesh, Vikram, Tabu, Monika Dogra, Lara Dutta, Isha Sharvani, Vinay Virmani

Director: Bejoy Nambiar

Length: 2.30 hours approximately.

Bollywood isn’t really known for smart films, and not that I am complaining, but it really ails one seeing something as absurd as DAVID despite of having a very good plot. Lasting endlessly, DAVID fails to draw attention unless it comes into its finale which has to be one of the smartest of recent times. However, DAVID is perfect example of opportunity lost. SHAITAAN directed by same director was more fun, quirky and equally enthralling. DAVID lacks in almost every area.

The film starts very well to be quite honest. The slickness, the elegance, the dialogues and just about everything moves on within pace. But as soon as we have been served with at-least two episodes of each of three characters, DAVID gets monotonous. The track involving Vikram, Isha Sharvani and Tabu in particular gets too boring after a point. Vikram discusses same thing with Tabu for almost all their scenes. The story never quite moves ahead in first half with no indication of collision of all three stories cooked.

Even post-intermission never speeds up and the director only adds many episodes.

David Movie Review by Rajeev Masand

Rating: 2.5

Cast: Neil Nitin Mukesh, Vinay Virmani, Vikram, Monica Dogra, Isha Sharvani, Tabu, Lara Dutta, Milind Soman, Akarsh Khurana, Nassar, Saurabh Shukla

Director: Bejoy Nambiar

Three stories set in three different time periods, each with a protagonist bearing the same name, is the central idea of director Bejoy Nambiar’s David. The link between the three stories, revealed in the final ten minutes of the film, is a tenuous one, but Nambiar nevertheless throws up interesting ideas, and you can’t accuse the film of being predictable.

The first track, set in 1975 London, is shot in pristine black and white, and stars Neil Nitin Mukesh as David, right-hand man and adopted son of a famed Muslim gangster. Our hero’s loyalty to his boss is tested when he discovers the very foundation of their relationship is based on a lie.

David Number 2 is Vinay Virmani (last seen in Speedy Singhs), who plays a struggling musician in Mumbai in the film’s second track set in the year 1999. The son of a Christian priest, our happy-go-lucky hero finds his life turned upside down when the followers of a Hindu fundamentalist politician assault his innocent father, accusing him of encouraging religious conversions.

David Movie Review by Taran Adarsh

david

Bejoy Nambiar picks unconventional options. In SHAITAN, his directorial debut, he chose relative newcomers [with the sole exception of Rajeev Khandelwal] to relate the story of well-heeled kids, belonging to the upper crust, who get implicated in a botched crime and how it pushes them to commit several lawbreaking acts.

In DAVID, Bejoy’s second outing, he introduces us to three Davids. Dwelling in three different places. In three different eras. But the characters aren’t linked to each other, though these characters do connect towards the film’s resolution. Given the genre of the film, one would expect DAVID to hurl a lot of shockers at you. Sadly, it doesn’t. Sure, the tone of the sequences alters constantly, from passion to angst to apprehension to conflict to retribution to vindication, but the film fails to involve you completely. What comes across on screen is inconsistent.

What you eventually carry home is the technique Bejoy adopts to narrate the three stories. But the gorgeous visuals and a couple of enthralling moments aren’t enough. A film ought to score as a complete package. That’s where DAVID falters!

The story revolves around the lives of three Davids in three different parts of the world in three different eras…
