I-Day: 10 films that define what patriotism means to young India

Not independence from colonial rule, but the India of today faces different struggles, some of which are illustrated in these movies. ‘Chak De! India’: Directed by Shimit Amin, this Shah Rukh Khan starrer film brought back a lot of focus on the neglected national sport hockey.

Scene of the Week : Swades
Check out one of the best scenes ever in Hindi Cinema – one that has great direction, cinematography, acting and background music. Also check out two interviews of Ashutosh Gowariker on Swades.

——————————————————————————————————-
Here is Ashutosh Gowariker’s interview before the release of the movie.
His office, resurrected in late music composer Madan Mahan’s recording studio, is buzzing with pre-release preparations of Swades. But compared to other offices during similar times, the atmosphere is congenial. Inside Ashutosh Gawarikar’s cabin, Satyajit Ray and Guru Dutt stare at you from life size posters, as if urging the young master to pursue their incomplete dreams. And amidst all these stalwarts, in a quite corner, stands a timeless poster of Shah Rukh Khan shot against the skyline. Cross armed, contemplative, as if assuring the dream merchants that Swades will walk into their footsteps if not fulfill all their dreams.
How and when was Swades conceived?
I was writing Swades around the same time as Lagaan and my first draft of both were ready at the same time. In fact, I had the option to make either of the films that time but I opted for Lagaan because I felt the script had more bravado. After failing in my earlier two attempts, I didn’t want to play safe, I wanted to take a leap.

The UNSUNG Social Influence of SRK!!
SRK inspires “LIFE” with SWADES…..Lagaan could just remain as a pinnacle of cinema..SWADES outgrew it to become a beacon ray of hope to many! Rest only claim to change lives,SRK does it w/o charging 3 crores/episode!

Casting doubts
Thanks to hithere for the link.

Besides talent and luck and everything else in between rejection is one factor that helped Shah Rukh Khan unlike anyone else. For the superstar that he is today, Shah Rukh made a career of accepting roles that were rejected by other two Khans. The two films that clearly announced his arrival Darr (1993) and Baazigar (1993) were supposed to feature Aamir and Salman Khans respective. Ever wondered how things would turned out if these films continued with the originally desired casting?
Casting makes all the difference. It’s impossible to imagine anyone else but Prithviraj Kapoor as Akbar in Mughl-e-Azam (1960). Better still, close your eyes and concoct Danny Denzongpa as Gabbar in Sholay (1975). It isn’t the same, right? One of things about exceptional casting is that it makes everything else easier. The patriarch of the first family of films whom everybody addressed as papaji in real life, Prithviraj Kapoor became Akbar to such an extent that he refused to appear on the sets till he felt like the emperor. Of course, no one had any issue with that. Also you needed someone as larger than life as Prithviraj Kapoor to infuse life into Abkar when you have Dilip Kumar as Salim.

Shah Rukh Khan’s best performance (And film)!

“There is something really refreshing about films that cast actors who have not yet been tied to an image.
Amitabh Bachchan wasn’t really an ‘angry young man’ when Zanjeer released. He became one only after playing the raging rebel over a series of films. But that raw appeal he demonstrated in Zanjeer could never be recreated. He got better and better with every bout of anger he displayed in front of the camera.
The same innocence can be seen in Shah Rukh Khan’s performance in Kundan Shah’s Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa.
When the film came out in 1993, SRK had just about begun as an actor. He was playing oddball characters (in fare like Deewana, Chamatkar, King Uncle, Maya Memsaab, Dil Aashna Hai), instead of going through the conventional hero routine. He had no established image. He wasn’t a cool dude. He wasn’t a bad boy. He wasn’t obsessed. He wasn’t dying.
In Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, he was normal.
Let’s rewind a bit and find out what was it about Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa that makes it SRK’s favourite film. And what was so special about the performance that fetched him the Filmfare Critics’ Award (1993).”
