To Do or Not to Do – Rajeev Masand’s Gossip Column

Having already successfully adapted Macbeth (Maqbool) and Othello (Omkara), Vishal has an edge over the other two as far as timing is concerned.

At least three filmmakers are reportedly hammering out scripts based on Hamlet. My Brother Nikhil director Onir has long expressed a desire to adapt the play. Now one hears Paan Singh Tomar director Tigmanshu Dhulia may also have conceived an adaptation set in the badlands of India. But most likely to beat them both to the finishing line is Vishal Bhardwaj who, one hears, has already started discussing his project with actors. Having already successfully adapted Macbeth (Maqbool) and Othello (Omkara), Vishal has an edge over the other two as far as timing is concerned.

Dhulia is currently filming Bullet Raja with Saif Ali Khan and Sonakshi Sinha and is committed to dive into Milan Talkies’ next with Imran Khan and Priyanka Chopra. Which means he is at least a year away from starting any new project. Onir, who already has a script idea in place, is allegedly facing serious casting hiccups for his planned adaptation.

Not that Vishal is putting all his eggs into the Bard’s basket. If Hamlet doesn’t happen, sources close to him say he already has a script in place for Kaminey 2 that will reunite him with Shahid Kapoor. Despite all the grief Kapoor gave Vishal while filming Kaminey a few years ago, the director has apparently banged out a script for the sequel, and is believed to have put the past behind him.

Not Alone in Bollywood – Rajeev Masand’s Gossip Column

Watching Madhuri keep the unit entertained with impressions of other stars and filmmakers, Huma was relieved to note that the legend was “actually very normal and without a trace of ego”.

Last week, just hours after the Supreme Court upheld the conviction of Sanjay Dutt on charges of illegal possession of firearms, sentencing the Munnabhai star to five years’ imprisonment, a swarm of the actor’s film industry friends had gathered at his Bandra home. Over the course of the next few days, producers, directors and actors trickled in, offering solidarity and volunteering to speak up in defence of Dutt as part of a campaign his wife Manyata was reportedly mobilising to plead for the actor’s pardon.

Dutt himself has been calm, say friends who visited him, and seems concerned only about providing for his family. The actor allegedly took at least two filmmakers to a quiet corner, urging them to promise that they would direct a film for his home banner. “I’m the only breadwinner of my family and I could serve up to three-and-a-half years,” he reportedly told them. “I need to make sure my family is taken care of.”

On Sunday, Dutt was paid a visit by his old friend Salman Khan, who had arrived the same morning from the US where he was undergoing medical treatment. Salman, whose own legal woes kept him busy the rest of the week, is believed to have assured Sanjay Dutt that he would “always” look out for the star’s family “if the situation arose”.

Before Kai Po Che – Rajeev Masand’s Gossip Column

If all goes well, Aishwarya Rai should begin working on her comeback project sometime this year.

Referring to the uncertainties of the business and its ability to surprise even veteran players, William Goldman, the Oscar- winning screenwriter of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, had once famously said: “In Hollywood, no one knows anything.” This is true of Bollywood as well.

The success of Kai Po Che has reinforced the fact that even successful stars and established producers can be wrong in their assessment of a script’s potential. Director Abhishek Kapoor is being lauded for his decision to cast non-stars as his leads, but few are aware that he had, in fact, approached big actors for the film before having to settle for a relatively unknown ensemble.

According to industry sources, Imran Khan, Shahid Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor were all presented with the script. But each of them is believed to have separately said ‘no’ to Abhishek on the grounds that the story didn’t convince them. Ranbir, in particular, who has displayed a knack for picking quality projects so far, not only turned down the film, but also allegedly told Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani that he was “surprised” they were thinking of producing the movie (Abhishek was originally developing the project for Excel Entertainment).

It is hard to tell how much Farhan and Ritesh were influenced by Ranbir’s feelings when they finally decided to pass on Kai Po Che.

Too Talented to Be a Heroine – Rajeev Masand’s Gossip Column

But it’s his falling out of Vishal Bhardwaj’s good graces that the industry considers Shahid’s most grave error.

If Zoya Akhtar had her way, it wouldn’t have been Katrina Kaif who starred opposite Hrithik Roshan in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, but—hold your breath—Kalki Koechlin. Sources within Excel Productions reveal that the Luck By Chance director had screen-tested Kalki to play the big female part in her second film, but the idea was allegedly shot down by everyone—from her producer Ritesh Sidhwani to her close friends and associates.

Apparently everyone around her felt the Dev D star was too ‘arthouse’ to be cast opposite a heartthrob hero like Hrithik, and Zoya was persuaded to seek out a more ‘conventional’ actress. Not that she had issues with Katrina or was forced to cast her against her choice. Zoya reportedly zeroed in on Katrina once she’d been convinced the film needed a more ‘mainstream’ presence, and got along with the actress famously while shooting together.

When it came to casting the second female lead in the film, the director reportedly insisted on Kalki. For the role of the nagging, clingy girlfriend who crashes her fiancé’s bachelor holiday, Zoya couldn’t look beyond Kalki, who sportingly took the part even though the character doesn’t even get her guy in the end. Zoya has said this was the role she had most fun writing “because it has so much meat to it… it’s a more fun character to create”.

Hrithik’s Quickie as Ghost Director – Rajeev Masand’s Gossip Column

Even as his dad, Rakesh Roshan, spends the next several months supervising post-production on Krrish 3 (which has finally wrapped filming and is scheduled to release around Diwali next year), Hrithik Roshan has decided to shoot a ‘quickie’ before he dives into Agneepath director Karan Malhotra’s next. That ‘inbetween’ film will be Anjaana Anjaani director Siddharth Anand’s remake of the Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz starrer Knight and Day.

The film, which will be produced by Fox Star India, was originally meant to star Shahid Kapoor, but reportedly the project could not take off with the Jab We Met star because no A-list actress could be persuaded to work with him. Since the film is a globe-hopping romantic-actioner with equally prominent roles for both the male and female lead, the studio allegedly decided to look past Shahid Kapoor instead of settling for a B-rung actress opposite him. There is some talk now that Katrina Kaif has been approached to play Hrithik’s romantic interest in the movie.

Bollywood naysayers are already saying this could well turn out to be another Kites on Hrithik’s CV, given that the actor (and possibly his filmmaker papa too) will inevitably clash with Anand during the film’s production.

“Ranveer and I aren’t in a relationship”- Anushka Sharma

Anushka Sharma is making the right noise. The industry seems to have woken up to her magic. No wonder everyone wants a slice of her. Filmmakers are vying with one another for her attention. Rajkumar Hirani has penciled her in for Peekay opposite Aamir Khan. Talk is that Anurag Kashyap too has signed her for Bombay Velvet. Clearly, she’s the cupcake of the season. That’s my cue to ask her:

Q. Your career is zooming…
A (Smiles) True. I have a good platter, something I’ve worked towards since my first film. I was clear I only wanted to do good films and I could see it happening for me.

Q. You are one of the few heroines who are also considered as actresses, does that give you a kick?
A I’ve admired actresses like Rani Mukerji, Tabu, Kajol, Madhuri Dixit, Sridevi and Kareena Kapoor, they are iconic for me. They made me think about my goal in life.I’m happy if people consider me an actress.

Q. Were you upset that you didn’t get the Filmfare Best Debut Award?
A Ya, I cried on my way back home because I felt I deserved it. Attending an award function was like a college award function and the feeling was “Sab ko mila mujhko nahi mila” kind.

Teri Meri Kahaani Has Low Monday

Teri Meri Kahaani dropped on Monday as it collected around 2.25 crore nett on Monday as per early estimates. The drop is around 55% from Friday which would have put the film in a decent position had it opened well.

The film has now grossed 18.25 crore nett approx in four days and the week should be around 23 crore nett. Delhi/UP has held up best as that circuit dropped less than 50%.

The first week will be 23 crore nett but it is unlikley the lifetime business of the film will get to 30 crore nett as Spiderman will dominate multiplexes when it releases on Friday.
