Milind’s Reflections: Cinematic Thoughts on the Year gone by-2012!

It is imperative to note that the year that went by was not one of the best years for Cinema as such.Neither the Hindi film-makers,nor the southern ones, especially Tamil directors shell out something spectacularly brilliant. One also cannot dispute the fact that inspite of nothing extraordinary, there was some splash in the pan and some films did steal the hearts with their sheer honesty!

The year started with a remake of an old-cult classic called Agneepath that had given Bachchan a national award. Hrithik was nowhere near the persona of Bachchan [that inspite of being itself irritating at times was superlative in terms of the emphatic portrayal of a character betrayed by life]. Agneepath was never about raw power, nor was Scarface from which it was partially inspired. These two films were about characters and their confrontation with life amidst a debate between the duty to do good and the necessity to outdo evil with evil. The film did boast of a few superlative performances like Rishi Kapoor who was good in his role and did bring out the emotion with aplomb.Hrithik disappointed.Nothing new in it as SRK in his role as Vijay had put up a miserable performance compared to Bachchan’s legendary portrayal of the same!

My take on Bollywood in 2012

I made a similar post last year  LINK

1) Hrithik in Agneepath- Agneepath was a tough one to be remade and Karan Malhotra did good by having a fresh take towards it. The best thing about this movie was Hrithik as Vijay Deenanath Chauhan. Hrithik did really well by portraying a famous character in his own way and not trying to repeat anything Big B had done in the original. He excelled in the fight sequences, as well as in the emotional family scenes. The best thing about Hrithik’s performance was that since it was distinct and dedicated, it took all scope of comparison out of the frame. A very good performance.

2) Irrfan in Paan Singh Tomar-I found Paan Singh Tomar a really average film. I thought the direction was average and so was the cinematography and background score. However despite some noteworthy flaws, Paan Singh Tomar became a legendary film, due to a tour de force performance by Irrfan. He was the Paan Singh Tomar right from the first till the last frame. It was one of those once in career kind of performances. Fortunately, with an actor like Irrfan, we may be able to see many more of these.

EVA – Baap of ROI/trending method for BoxOffice

The first and foremost measure of performance that comes to one’s mind is profit/ROI- the accounting measure of performance. Someone has aptly said- profit is an opinion, not the fact. If this were not case , one would not have seen the debacle of big companies like Enron, World Com etc. All such companies managed their earnings well and have shown better performance in terms of ROI.

The thing is traditional measures ignore the definite requirement that the rate of return should be at least as high as the cost of capital. The cost of capital is the rate of return required to persuade the investor to make a given investment.Or a bare minimum margin which the investor expects by making a certain amount of investment.Economic Value Added (EVA) is a financial performance method to calculate the true economic profit of an investment. EVA can be calculated as net income minus a charge for the opportunity cost of the capital invested.

If EVA = 0 , Investment value neither added or eroded
EVA >1 , Investment value enhanced
EVA < 1 ,Investment value eroded.

The biggest catch of EVA is that it can be negative even for investments which have positive income!

Sonakshi Sinha Interview on The Front Row with Anupama Chopra

Sonakshi Sinha made her Bollywood debut next to Salman Khan in “Dabangg,” a movie that went on to become the box-office hit of 2010. Since then, her career has taken off.

Ms. Sinha speaks to film critic Anupama Chopra about her no-kissing rule, her ideal man, and her upcoming film, “Joker.”

Here is an edited transcript from their conversation on “The Front Row with Anupama Chopra”:

Anupama: Sonakshi, your co-star in Joker, Akshay Kumar, has described you as a pure “Bhartiya nari,” (an Indian woman in the classical sense.) Is that an apt description?

Sonakshi Sinha: To him, yes because he thinks that I look like the Hindi film heroines from the previous era.  So that’s what he thinks Indian heroines should look like onscreen. I don’t know, I guess that’s his description of me.

Anupama: In Joker, you’re playing an NRI character, or a non-resident Indian. But she comes to India and has to be disguised as a village woman.  Why is this village woman such a recurring note in your career? Are you getting typecast?

Sonakshi: When the script comes to me, I look at it and ask: Will I like to play this character? Will I fit into the mould?

‘Joker’ hiding from ‘Tiger’: Where is Akshay Kumar?

Mumbai: The King and the Queen are in their places, but looks like the Joker has gone into hiding. Even with a superhit jodi like Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha in the lead, close on the heels of their last Rs 150 crore blockbuster ‘Rowdy Rathore’, it appears that no one wants to make hay while the sun is shining.

Just 15 days left to promote the film, surprisingly, most of the members of Shirish Kunder’s cast and crew other than the aliens are too busy with other professional commitments.

Who’s busy doing what
First Look: Akshay Kumar's 100th film 'Joker'

The Amazing Spiderman Has Huge Opening Maximum Dull

The Amazing Spiderman took a huge opening across India and is set for record first day for Hollywood films in India. The opening for a Hollywood film dubbed into Hindi was the best since 2012 released in 2009.

Maximum took a dull opening of 0-3% and has little chance at the box office.

Gangs Of Wasseypur had a low week of around 17 crore nett. There is a drop on the eighth day but its not huge. Overall the film is trending like Ferrari Ki Sawaari but at lower levels.

Teri Meri Kahaani had a poor first week of 23 crore nett. The film has dropped heavily on the 8th day. FLOP

Ferrari Ki Sawaari is doing well on Saturday and Sunday probably due to kids. It was the case in week one and week two. The business goes up on Saturday and Sunday but other days are low. The film has collected around 27 crore nett in two weeks. AVERAGE

Shanghai crashed further in week three collecting around 1.25 crore nett. The film has grossed 24.25 crore nett in three weeks. FLOP

Rowdy Rathore 4.25 crore nett in its 4th taking its three week total to 128.25 crore nett. BLOCKBUSTER

Rowdy Rathore Edging Out Ferrari Ki Sawaari

Rowdy Rathore is again starting to become the number one film at the boxoffice on an all India level. Rowdy Rathore had dominated the box office for two weeks but for the first four days of its third week it had to be content with second place after Ferrari Ki Sawaari.

On Tuesday both Rowdy Rathore and Ferrari Ki Sawaari collected around 1.75 crore nett but as Ferrari Ki Sawaari dropped another 10-15% from Monday while Rowdy Rathore was at a similar it is inevitable that Rowdy Rathore will have better all India collections on Wednesday and Thursday.

At many places the collections were better on Tuesday than Monday..

VVC Finds Rowdy Rathore Rubbish, But Akshay Likes Ferrari Ki Sawaari

VVC Finds ´Rowdy Rathore´ Rubbish, But Akshay Likes ´Ferrari Ki Sawaari´

When the media cornered Akshay Kumar regarding Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s comment about ‘Rowdy Rathore’, where he indirectly referred to it as a “Rubbish Film” making 100 crore, the star had a very dignified reply.

As per those present at the 11 p.m. party on 15th June, at Taj Land’s End (to celebrate ‘Rowdy Rathore’ success), Akshay said said to the fourth estate present, “If Visdhu Vinod Chopra did not like our ‘Rowdy Rathire’, that is his choice. But I saw his ‘Ferrari Ki Sawaari’ and liked it.”

Great one Akshay!
