A Film With the Kapoor Cousins – Rajeev Masand’s Column

Tabu has always insisted that she’d much rather stay at home, her nose buried in books, than spend her days on movie sets where she doesn’t feel challenged.

Soon after returning from Cannes where she will attend an out-of-competition gala screening of Bombay Talkies, the portmanteau film she’s directed a 27-minute segment for, Zoya Akhtar is likely to finally wrap up the script of her next feature in which she hopes to cast Ranbir Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. Akhtar has reportedly been working tirelessly with her writing partner (and Taalash director) Reema Kagti on this script, while still managing to squeeze in short Goa holidays every few months.

According to sources close to Kareena Kapoor, the actress has been “hounding” Zoya to finalise the script so that they can dive into the film “right away”. Ranbir, meanwhile, who is committed to completing Abhinav Kashyap’s Besharam before starting to shoot Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet, also has projects with Imtiaz Ali and Anurag Basu lined up. Still, he is believed to have “reacted very positively” when Zoya first narrated the germ of the idea, and has apparently asked her to bring him the finished script when it is done.

Zoya’s project, which could be the first to star the two cousins together, is apparently an ensemble piece with a large cast. She is aware that getting Ranbir and Kareena on board is only the first hurdle; the second is coordinating their dates with those of the “massive” supporting cast she has lined up.

Spielberg’s Bollywood Fan Club – Rajeev Masand’s Gossip Column

It’s been a hectic shoot for SRK, who has been forced to work long hours and full weeks because Sanjay Leela Bhansali won’t release dates booked with Deepika Padukone.

Film directors Zoya Akhtar, Homi Adajania and Reema Kagti reportedly had a good laugh at Madhur Bhandarkar’s expense during an event in Mumbai last week when Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg was interviewed by Amitabh Bachchan in the presence of several Bollywood filmmakers. Apparently, Bhandarkar slowly sidled upto Spielberg during the photo-op at the end of Bachchan’s session and tried relentlessly to get an ‘exclusive picture’ with the maker of Jurassic Park. The directors were asked to assemble on stage for a group photograph with Spielberg, but Bhandarkar was apparently in no mood to share the frame with his peers. Since it was virtually impossible to catch Spielberg alone at the crowded affair, the Heroine director got as close to him as possible, turned sideways to make it appear as if they were speaking face-to-face and then asked a friend to quickly take a picture. Unfortunately for him, he was spotted masterminding this entire sneaky operation, and the others couldn’t stop laughing at his “desperate behaviour”.

Meanwhile, Karan Johar decided to skip the evening altogether since he reportedly didn’t want to be a part of what he called a “classroom picture”. Johar claimed he was tending to his ailing mum when he called to inform the organisers that he couldn’t make it, but then got his dates mixed up and was spotted by a gaggle of waiting photographers and camera crews as he left the very same five- star hotel after a workout in the gym.

Ta-fuq? – My Views/Take on TALAASH

My Views/Take on TALAASH

This Being My Most Awaited Movie this Year, I am Dissapointed to an Extent by TALAASH.

Reema Kagti’s Supposed ‘Suspense’ Turned ‘Supernatural’ Thriller Starts of Well and Builds it’s Premise Interestingly thru the Marine Drive’s and Kamatipura’s of Mumbai.

Infact, the Entire Prostitution Track Consisting of Well Cast Unknown Actors and Nawaaz is Highly Engaging and Gives a Certain Raw/Real Feel to the Movie.

But, the Relatively Slow Pace and the Unintelligent Ending[Kareena Saving Aamir inside the Water/Aamir Digging the Grave/Burning her Remains] Harm the Movie Big Time.

There was No Element of Double Crossing Or a Surprise Shock Element[An Abbas-Mustan Staple] but it Actually Took the ‘Bhoot/Aatmaien Bhatakti Hain’ Angle which was a bit Difficult to Digest.

The BG Score was Used Adequately and Still in Love with ‘Jee Le Zarra’.
Mumbai has been well Depicted.

Rani has a Small Role but Shines in her Showdown Sequence with Aamir.

All the Scenes Involving the Kid, Nawaaz and the Red Light Area were Brilliant at Different Levels.

Aamir Khan as always a Quality Acting Force Rocks the Movie with his Brooding Act and his Scenes with Kareena are A Delight.

But, Surprisingly it’s Kareena Kapoor who Steals the Show with her Teasing And Smirking and has Dialogues.

Aamir creates new genre-HORRIFIC SUSPENSE

Movie Review…Talaash  (Spolier Galore)

The movie starts with an empty marine drive road in the middle of the night in Mumbai where three persons  present along with a female dog ,seems to be scared for no reason( probably they are scared off the sound of the ocean)….Off comes a car zipping from the opposite direction , bangs itself in to the cement barricades without provocation  and rolls in to the ocean ( cinematic high moment)…Needless to say the driver ,who is an actor, dies …On the face of it ,it looks like an accident but for some unknown reasons Inspector Surjan Sekhawat (aamir khan) decides to investigate the matter assuming it as murder…(probably the inspector still didn’t forget his dialogue in his previous movie…excellence ke peeche bhago)..

As the insepector who is leading a depressed life ,( as he blames himself for his sons’ death, who drowned in the river), starts investigating the case, new startling revelations surface one after another…Like, the deceased used to be a flop star before he became a hit star( new revelation) and he has got a friend whose name is kejriwal (No.. not arvind kejriwal..its sanjay kejriwal).  The moot question is why the car banged in to the barricades without provocation ??

Talaash is the alter ego of OMG

**** Spoilers Galore******

Story:

The story is about 4 characters. Kareena plays a prostitute who has a dalla named Shashi. He has a langda assistant(nawaz) .A film actor named armaan and his two friends , kejriwal and Nikhil.Aamir plays an inspector and rani is his wife.

The film starts with the car accident of armaan . Aamir takes up this case.

There is a side story to aamir which I will mention first.Aamir has lost his son due to an accident leading to both aamir-rani having a depressed life. His son drowns himself while boating.Aamir blames his irresponsiblity for his death. His wife rani doesnt speak much until she meeets shernaz patel who practises blackmagic and claims that she can talk to his son’s aatma. She even gives her a practical demonstration which convinces rani that ghosts/aamta do exist. But aamir doesnt agree. He is an upright well educated policeman and he has seen OMG.This son-track doesn’t seem relevant to the talaash case but later its link is given.

Now the main case is this. Kareena was sent by his dalla Shashi as the gangbang bitch for the pleasure of armaan, kejriwal and Nikhil. When she is making love to Nikhil in car, accidentally the door of the car opens and they both fall down.

Sanket’s Review: “Talaash” is not entirely engaging, though its fairly good!

Cast: Aamir Khan, Kareena Kaporr, Rani Mukherjee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Shernaz patel

Director: Reema Kagti

Length: 2.20 hours approximately

TALAASH, this week’s new thriller has lots of surprises in store, but they are not well unfolded. The genre of the film itself is a big surprise. It’s really impressive to see so many mainstream faces doing such kind of suspense drama which takes a path away from our regular suspense thrillers. From prostitute areas to high profiled people to small time gangsters, TALAASH revolves around many characters and each is well defined.

The investigation process has a solid pace and TALAASH races very speedily for first 40 minutes or so. But after a point, too many plots lands up in the film and many seem irrelevant to the basic plot. But, TALAASH doesn’t entirely lose up. It has its high moments. The emotional connection between Aamir Khan and Rani Mukherjee is smartly handled and has a meaning which you come to know once the film is ended with its major twist!

Second half has again many edge-off-the-seats moments like that excellent chase sequence on railway station to the construction building. But the major clutch remains in its conviction factor.

Talaash Movie Review by Sputnik

Director: Reema Kagti

Cast: Aamir Khan, Rani Mukerji, Kareena Kapoor, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Shernaz Patel, Rajkumar Yadav

Synopsis: Armaan Kapoor, a film star, dies in a car accident and Surjan Singh Shekhawat (Aamir Khan) is the cop handling the investigation. Surjan and his wife (Rani Mukerji) are going through an emotional crisis since their son’s death. Rosie (Kareena Kapoor) is a prostitute who keeps helping Surjan in his investigation. The movie is basically about closure.

Some scenes are very good like the interrogation scenes or Aamir’s interaction with the brothel owner or the scenes between Aamir and Kareena or the scene where Rajkumar Yadav gets stuck in between Aamir and Rani’s confrontation. The kid’s death scene and the scenes of Aamir imagining how he could have averted the boat accident are excellent. The best scene of the movie however is the climax scene in the car.

Now the flaws. The movie is basically inspired from The Sixth Sense. Not sure why they had to get inspired from a movie that is so famous in India. There is a scene where Shernaz Patel tries to tell Aamir something which seemed straight out of The Sixth Sense. There is a chase scene involving the limping Temur (Nawaz) which kind of drags a bit.

Talaash Boxoffice Collections Thread

Talaash First Day Business

Talaash grossed a good 12.25-12.50 crore nett approx on day one due to strong business at multiplexes. Basically most circuits had strong areas and weak areas be it big circuits or smaller circuits.

A Rajasthan was good in Jaipur and Kota but rest were average, Delhi/UP was strong in Delhi city, Noida and Lucknow but other cities were not as good. Similarly in Mumbai circuit, Mumbai city recorded good collections but in Gujarat only a few cities contributed well. The South Indian circuits of Mysore, Nizam and Tamil Nadu were all strong comparatively.

It’s a good start for the film and now the key will be what sort of improvement can come on Saturday as a 12 crore first day on this release leaves room for plenty of growth on Saturday if the audience takes to the film.
