Sizzle After the Fizzle – Rajeev Masand’s Gossip Column

According to an eyewitness, Salman asked Aseem not to change lenses for each set up, and instead offered to change his own position for each different magnification.

With Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani having hit bullseye at the box-office despite tepid reviews, the film industry is already keen to pair Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone together on screen again. The actors, who hadn’t been cast opposite each other since Bachna Ae Haseeno in 2008 (possibly because of their infamous real-life break up), shared a scorching chemistry in Yeh Jawaani… and it’s no surprise that greedy producers want to cash in on that.

An Imtiaz Ali project starring Ranbir that was reportedly shopping around for a female lead may now have its casting sorted, sources say. There are also murmurs that Karan Johar—who couldn’t decide who, between Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, would be better suited to star opposite Ranbir—may now be eyeing Deepika for his own directorial venture: an elaborate Partition-set period romance with a large ensemble cast.

The two young actors themselves are not unaware that their chemistry has gotten the industry excited, and they’ve apparently decided they won’t just accept every offer that comes their way. Deepika, who has recently wrapped Chennai Express with Shah Rukh Khan, and is currently filming Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram Leela with boyfriend Ranveer Singh, has told friends that she and Ranbir will work together “sparingly” but only on “special movies”.

Official Synopsis:

While Simran goes on a trip across Europe by asking for permission from her overbearing father Naina decides to just leave for a trekking trip to Manali by writing a letter to her overbearing mother. They both meet at the railway station just like Raj and Simran do and there is a reenactment of the DDLJ train scene where Raj helps Simran board the train. While Simran falls in love with this carefree, fun guy Raj who flirts with Simran’s friend, Naina falls in love with this carefree, fun guy Bunny who flirts with Lara.

My take on Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Prologue

In India and most of the cinema outside, the audience stresses a lot of the Genre of the film. Is it a Romance..Or a comedy or an Action..or the Amalgamated features like Cop-Drama, Courtroom-Drama, Romantic Comedy, Action-thriller.. etc.
What is fascinating is that while it is very much possible that a writer, set out to write a Cop-Drama or a Rom-Com..it is equally possible that someone just a wrote story that came to his pen and it may borrow or be qualified for a genre or two.

Review:

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is all about what the title says. It tells you a story about the dreams, aspirations, energy, awkwardness, inhibitions, ignorance and a whole lot of other emotional characteristics of a person who is new to adulthood and is out there to take the world by himself/herself and may or may not be ready to come out of their parents’s shell.

The first half of the film deals with Ranbir’s ambitions, Deepika’s struggle (to deal with herself and the world), Aditya Roy Kapoor’s ignorance and Kalki’s emotions. Its fascinating to see the four gel with each other and notice (and not notice) how different they are. Its interesting how the director does manage to focus on all of them and give the characters their due.

My take on Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

yjhd

Brief about “Ye Jawani Hai Diwani” – Story about 4 friends, 4 different characters, that has romance, comedy, songs, dance, cheesy lines and second half full of cliche with “NO” story. But It’s an abstract movie served in a commercial platter about individual characters, their traits and personalities, their approach towards relationship, life & commitments.

Ranbir is a chilled guy with “so cool” attitude who believes in his dreams, to live a jolly life with no regrets, Deepika is a topper, bookworm and medical student but bored of regular sophisticated daily routines of studies, Aditya – dear friend of ranbir and always lookout for an opportunity to get laid down and Kalki – friend of Ranbir and Aditya and loves Aditya discreetly and but gets hurt from Aditya’s constant flirting’s with other girls. All four goes to manali for trekking whereby deepika “the introvert” gells with all three of them and falls in love with Rabir but b4 she could tell her feelings Aditya finds a Scholarship letter of Rabir in his bag showing upon which Ranbir admits of deciding to go to Chicago to study journalism. Now watch to know where their destiny takes each of them.

Just like “Naina” and “Kabir” had two different world views, this film can be viewed in two different ways;

View 1: You go to watch a movie just like every other movie purely for entertainment and you will realize that the film was fantastic in the first half mainly due to its pace, funny moments, jokes, cool attitude of urban youth and one of the best Holi number of recent times.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani Movie Review by Rajeev Masand

Rating: 3

May 31, 2013

Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Kalki Koechlin, Aditya Roy Kapur, Evelyn Sharma, Farooque Shaikh, Dolly Ahluwalia, Kunal Roy Kapur

Director: Ayan Mukherji

How much you enjoy Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani depends entirely on how much you’ve missed the typical Karan Johar formula. Wake Up Sid director Ayan Mukerji takes us on a familiar journey through holiday romances, family conundrums, and big fat Indian weddings. It’s predictable every step of the way, but Mukerji has a superb cast that never slips, even when his script does.

Straight-laced ‘Scholar Naina’ (Deepika Padukone) has little in common with thrill-seeking Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor) when she joins him and his two best friends – Aditi (Kalki Koechlin) and Avi (Aditya Roy Kapur) – on a trip to Manali. But after a series of collective experiences, including a messy run-in with the locals, a midnight trek to a high-altitude peak, and intoxicated Holi celebrations, she’s lost her inhibitions and also her heart. Too bad Bunny is focused on chasing his dream to travel the world, unwilling to let anything or anyone hold him back. When they’re all reunited at a wedding eight years later, Bunny must ask himself if he really wants to make the same choices all over again.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani Boxoffice Collections Thread

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani Has Bumper Opening

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has taken a bumper opening across India at multiplexes. The opening at multiplexes can be compared with Ek Tha Tiger which was a holiday release. It is practically opened 90-100% across the board and multiplexes which tend to start slow have also started strongly.

It is not a holiday release so the film will slow in the late afternoon as this sort of pace is normally only kept when it is holiday. The film was always expected to open huge in the metros but the multiplexes in Rajasthan, CP Berar and CI have also opened to excellent collections.

The single screen opening is also likely to be very good though not like the multiplexes. The opening is sure to be the second highest non holiday opening of all time (beating films like Ra.One, Don 2, Rowdy Rathore etc) and the record non holiday 19.50 crore nett figure of Dabangg 2 is also not safe but that will depend on the range of contribution from single screens.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani Movie Review by Taran Adarsh

Opposites attract! He’s charismatic, gregarious and passionate with an indomitable spirit to explore places. She’s the archetypical seedhi-saadhi girl, Plain Jane actually, an academician who’s focused on attaining what she’s zeroed for herself as a career. Add two more characters who cross their paths in this beautiful journey called life. Now place these four straight-out-of-life characters in a bottle, shake with a swizzle stick and presto, a love story is ready to be served.

Come to think of it, Ayan Mukerji’s second outing YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI is akin to his accomplished directorial debut WAKE UP SID. Yet diverse! The characters in both, WAKE UP SID and YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI, undergo a metamorphosis and transform into mature individuals with the passage of time. Life is a great teacher after all. At the same time, YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI is dissimilar from films of its ilk — and conventional love stories too — because Ayan’s characters never embark upon the run of the mill, mundane route to express feelings towards each other.

Like all rom-coms, YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI sparkles with romance, merriment and heartache, is brightly glossy and boasts of crackling chemistry between its lead actors, but Ayan makes sure the heady concoction never waters down.
