New Beginnings with Old Friends – Rajeev Masand’s Gossip Column

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif no longer seem to be trying to hide the fact that they are a couple.

Harman Baweja (remember him?), who hasn’t had a release since 2009’s colossal dud What’s Your Raashee?, was spotted partying in Vancouver recently during a Bollywood awards ceremony. The actor, who has dated Priyanka Chopra and Shamita Shetty and is now reportedly seeing Bipasha Basu, was noticed chatting up pretty locals and happily posing for pictures with star-struck fans. Bipasha was in London while her beau made the most of his Canadian vacation.

Since her break-up with John Abraham two years ago, Bipasha has admitted that she’s been dating frequently, and actors like Shahid Kapoor, Harman and Hollywood’s Josh Hartnett are some of the men she has been linked to. It is also a well-known fact that Bipasha has renewed her friendship with exes Milind Soman and Dino Morea, who her friends say she was categorically asked to “stay far away from” while she was with John.

Speaking of Dino Morea, he is believed to have signed up for—wait for it—a theatre acting course in Delhi. Too little too late? Dino has apparently told friends that he is taking a three-month break from “the scene” to “recharge my batteries”. He successfully transitioned last year into a producer with Jism 2, on which he had Pooja Bhatt as his partner.

A Shirtless Hunk’s Fear of Flying Low – Rajeev Masand’s Gossip Column

It was a poignant moment at a Bollywood awards ceremony in Vancouver last week when Priyanka Chopra dedicated her Best Actress award to her father and requested that he accept the trophy with her.

Oozing confidence about his performance as Mumbai gangster Manya Surve in director Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout At Wadala, John Abraham insists that the film will force the audience to see him in a new light. The actor has revealed he’s shirtless only in one scene of the film and “the focus is purely on the acting”.

Not allergic to appearing in multi-starrer films (his biggest box-office hits, Houseful 2 and Race 2, were both ensemble projects), John has reportedly signed on to feature in another star-heavy sequel—Anees Bazmee’s Welcome 2. Which is why it makes no sense that he’d turn down Farah Khan’s Happy New Year with Shah Rukh Khan and Abhishek Bachchan.

“Farah and Shah Rukh saw me in a particular part, but I couldn’t see myself in that role,” John told me last week. “I’m grateful and touched that they thought of me, but I didn’t think I suited the role at all,” he added. The film is believed to be a musical comedy about a group of friends with two left feet who participate in a championship for the worst dancers ever. Farah is apparently still in the process of casting three male parts as well as the female lead.

My take on Bollywood in 2012

I made a similar post last year  LINK

1) Hrithik in Agneepath- Agneepath was a tough one to be remade and Karan Malhotra did good by having a fresh take towards it. The best thing about this movie was Hrithik as Vijay Deenanath Chauhan. Hrithik did really well by portraying a famous character in his own way and not trying to repeat anything Big B had done in the original. He excelled in the fight sequences, as well as in the emotional family scenes. The best thing about Hrithik’s performance was that since it was distinct and dedicated, it took all scope of comparison out of the frame. A very good performance.

2) Irrfan in Paan Singh Tomar-I found Paan Singh Tomar a really average film. I thought the direction was average and so was the cinematography and background score. However despite some noteworthy flaws, Paan Singh Tomar became a legendary film, due to a tour de force performance by Irrfan. He was the Paan Singh Tomar right from the first till the last frame. It was one of those once in career kind of performances. Fortunately, with an actor like Irrfan, we may be able to see many more of these.

Best Male and Female performers of 2012- My views.

2012 has been a fascinating year. Few films had unprecedented box office success as well as audience’s acceptance, while few films did not really set the box office on fire but surely placed themselves in hearts of audience. Here are my bests of 2012 performances.

Male –

5. Sharman Joshi in Ferrari Ki Sawaari- In this small little heart warming film, Sharman Joshi plays a very adorable father and a martinet son. He packs an excellent performance and he has instant connect too!

4. Aamir Khan in Talaash- As a confused and depressed cop, Aamir Khan shines once again in a role which has its own oxymoronic rhythm. There are many layers to his characters and Aamir conveys his emotions through right blend of expressions and diction. He is not a perfectionist for nothing!

3. Irrfaan Khan in Paan Singh Tomar- Irrfan Khan is a veteran actor is a very obvious statement. In Paan Singh Tomar, Irrfan Khan once again delivers a riveting performance as the guy who has lost his patience when he is been rejected by police officer for demanding a basic and ethical action against illegal on-goings! A Significant performance in a significant film!

2. Ranbir Kapoor in Barfi- As the mute, deaf, charming and happy guy, Ranbir kapoor makes you feel his character.

‘Barfi!’ nominated as India’s entry at the Oscars in Foreign Language Film category

'Barfi!' nominated as India's entry at the Oscars in Foreign Language Film category

New Delhi: Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Barfi! has been nominated as India’s entry in the category of ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ at the Oscars in February next year.

The film, directed by Anurag Basu which also features Priyanka Chopra, has beaten 19 other films to be named India’s official entry to the Oscars. It registered a powerful box office collection in its opening week, by earning Rs. 58.6 crore.

The film, about love between differently-abled – a deaf and mute boy and an autistic girl – opened in approximately 700 screens in India on September 14.

Barfi! is the Indian entry to the Oscars. We selected it to represent the country out of 20 films,” Supran Sen, secretary general of the Film Federation of India, told PTI.

Priyanka Chopra, who is currently out of the country, tweeted “Yaaaaaay!!India’s official entry to the Oscars!!! Anurag sir,RK,Ills, ronnie,Sid n all! Wish I was in India to share this! Go team!”

Disney UTV, the producer and distributor of the film, was ecstatic at the success. “We are honoured that Barfi! has been selected to represent India as its official entry to the Academy Awards 2013. Barfi! is very close to the hearts of all of us at UTV, and it gives us great satisfaction that a film we have developed and nurtured from its inception has met with so much love from audiences and critics worldwide,” Siddharth Roy Kapur, managing director of Studios, Disney UTV, said in a statement.
