Man of Steel Movie Review – FS

man-of-steel-poster4

This movie has surpassed all my expectations that I had before entering into cinema theatre and mind you I really had HUGE expectations from this movie as I am a fan of Super hero movies. The movie looks so grand in the canvas as if it is the most expensive movie ever made. The graphics, the sound effects, VFX, background score and the action in pre and post climax is awesome and mind-blowing. The Introduction of krypton planet and action within the planet is executed brilliantly in 3D

This Superman is not the continuity/remake/prequel of any previous versions of Superman series. It is all together a new film that has references from where the concept was developed. This Superman does not wear any red undies over the pants and unlike the animation series he doesn’t get weak or surrender to the krypton powers because he is one of them and he was the lone natural birth after centuries to Jor El (Russel Crowe). As he had foreseen the devastation of his own planet he dispatches his son to another planet (Earth) far from the stars in order to protect the future offspring’s.

General Zod/Zark, who tried to overtake the power to rule the planet in a coup that calls for sentencing for some planetary numbers is set free when the whole planet itself gets destroyed with its power.

My take on Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Prologue

In India and most of the cinema outside, the audience stresses a lot of the Genre of the film. Is it a Romance..Or a comedy or an Action..or the Amalgamated features like Cop-Drama, Courtroom-Drama, Romantic Comedy, Action-thriller.. etc.
What is fascinating is that while it is very much possible that a writer, set out to write a Cop-Drama or a Rom-Com..it is equally possible that someone just a wrote story that came to his pen and it may borrow or be qualified for a genre or two.

Review:

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is all about what the title says. It tells you a story about the dreams, aspirations, energy, awkwardness, inhibitions, ignorance and a whole lot of other emotional characteristics of a person who is new to adulthood and is out there to take the world by himself/herself and may or may not be ready to come out of their parents’s shell.

The first half of the film deals with Ranbir’s ambitions, Deepika’s struggle (to deal with herself and the world), Aditya Roy Kapoor’s ignorance and Kalki’s emotions. Its fascinating to see the four gel with each other and notice (and not notice) how different they are. Its interesting how the director does manage to focus on all of them and give the characters their due.

My take on Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

yjhd

Brief about “Ye Jawani Hai Diwani” – Story about 4 friends, 4 different characters, that has romance, comedy, songs, dance, cheesy lines and second half full of cliche with “NO” story. But It’s an abstract movie served in a commercial platter about individual characters, their traits and personalities, their approach towards relationship, life & commitments.

Ranbir is a chilled guy with “so cool” attitude who believes in his dreams, to live a jolly life with no regrets, Deepika is a topper, bookworm and medical student but bored of regular sophisticated daily routines of studies, Aditya – dear friend of ranbir and always lookout for an opportunity to get laid down and Kalki – friend of Ranbir and Aditya and loves Aditya discreetly and but gets hurt from Aditya’s constant flirting’s with other girls. All four goes to manali for trekking whereby deepika “the introvert” gells with all three of them and falls in love with Rabir but b4 she could tell her feelings Aditya finds a Scholarship letter of Rabir in his bag showing upon which Ranbir admits of deciding to go to Chicago to study journalism. Now watch to know where their destiny takes each of them.

Just like “Naina” and “Kabir” had two different world views, this film can be viewed in two different ways;

View 1: You go to watch a movie just like every other movie purely for entertainment and you will realize that the film was fantastic in the first half mainly due to its pace, funny moments, jokes, cool attitude of urban youth and one of the best Holi number of recent times.

Thoughts on Oblivion

As a big fan of the sci-fi genre, it often saddens me to see the same old Aliens attacking the earth and wearing slightly different costumes every time. Somehow someone always turns out to be the hero and saves planet earth. All the innovation on the part of filmmakers is spent on the guns, artillery and destruction images. For me, this doesn’t work at all. What I desire to see in a Sci-fi movie- more importantly a movie dealing with Outer Space are images- Strong images that emphasizes on the idea of the life beyond earth or far from earth. This is where 2001: A space Odyssey succeeded in an almost unparalleled way. Those visuals that showed the outer space or should I say the Director’s (or the novelist’s) imagination of the outer space. Those images and the strong focus and pause on each and every image are what made it so much special. Similarly Danny Boyle’s Sunshine or Duncan jones’s Moon worked for me big time- both have them having strong focus on the visuals and done subtly.

Watching Oblivion was a great experience for me. It’s quite different from what’s shown in the Trailers. It’s such a breath of fresh air from the loud action zero story science fiction which have less science in the fiction.

Aashiqui2

Synopsis:
Rahul is a singer who is addicted to drinking. He meets Arohi and gets her a chance as a singer and she becomes a huge success while his career takes a nosedive.

Read the detailed plot of A Star is Born from wikipedia and it looks like Aashiqui 2 is copied almost completely from A Star Is Born – the 1954 version. The original 1937 Version is also similar except that it is about actors instead of singers. Abhimaan was also inspired from the same movie. There is one music recording scene which is copied from Akele Hum Akele Tum too.

The movie at first looked like a TV serial. It looked interesting for a while but then became repetitive and tedious. Some of the things like the reporter or other people making sly remarks did not look like from a movie set in present time.

Aditya Roy Kapoor was good as the insecure singer and his role does remind of Rockstar. Shraddha Kapoor was ok but her character looked like one from the 60s/70s who will stand by her man no matter what.

My Short Review of Shootout At Wadala

Watched Shootout at Wadala on Thursday night. I was expecting a brutal gangster intriguing movie and I got the same, save intriguing. The movie started of as usual, how a young innocent boy becomes a gangster and his rise and fall. We all knew that it would be the story, but the treatment was what we were looking forward to. Unfortunately the treatment is a let down. There are more than one hiccups in the screenplay. The script use to just hurried onto you without proper flow. In fact the flow of the movie is very bad. The director tried to put in dialogues which should have created whistles, but instead there were abuses and abuses. There were few, but it looked like so forcibly done that it removed the charm out of it, the lackluster dialogue delivery not helping either.

There are 3 item songs, yes 3. The Laila song is bearable (because of catchy song, Sunny Leone is just a show piece without any dance moves), the other 2 songs becomes unbearable. One cant take more than one item song anyways. So music is not a great show here, neither is the background. Cinematography is very good and so is the whole retro setup of 1970s and 80s.

A Note on Commando

Following is not essentially a review but more of what I feel about action movies with Commando being the case in point.

Speaking strictly from a business perspective, wouldn’t it make more sense if there were more movies that catered to the vast male population who are hungry of some quality action cinema?

The Box office verdict of a movie like Commando does not contradict or negate my aforementioned question. Commando is just a first in the line (hopefully) of some others to follow. A small budget action movie centered on a hugely talented Vidyut Jamwal and his breathtaking stunts, Commando serves exactly what has been missing from the Hindi movie Action scene.

Have you ever wondered why Die Hard is such a celebrated and loved movie all around the world? So much so, that when every other year, a new Die Hard movie comes to screen, people do think about giving the first one a watch again-just because of the sheer mention of the title!! It’s because, Die Hard shows what most action lovers want to see in a movie- “Believable Action” In the fight of one vs. many, you can’t win based on your muscles or your heavenly presence; you can only win because of your skills and your intelligence.

My Review of Ek Thi Daayan

etd

Starring – Emraan Hashmi, Konkana Sen, Huma Qureshi and Kalki.

Director – Kannan Iyer

Here is my short review of Ek thi Daayan. As most of us may have guessed it, it’s a supernatural horror movie, directed by Kannan Iyer and produced by Vishal Bhardwaj and Ekta Kapoor. The expectations were decent for the movie from the audience and the movie does gives more than expected.

Emraan plays a magician, with Huma being his love interest. His magic tricks being very amusing, he is one of the most famous too. The 1st half is about Emraan’s flashback from his childhood memories and 2nd half about his present and how he deals with them.

I do not want to divulge even a bit of story, as it may tantamount to spoiler. So I would just go ahead with my conclusion without an actual review. It’s based on the witchcraft, black magic, etc. The story is breezy, enthralling and engaging. There are no dull moments! Yes, though being in a horror genre, the movie does not have dull moments. It’s a rarity which this movie could achieve in this particular genre.  It has couple of likeable songs but doesn’t spoil the flow.

Just Back from Commando

I had said before I will watch the film for Vidyut Jamwal and now i can safely say he alone is worth the money. If there is a star today who reminds us of the Akshay of 90s , then its Vidyut. At many points in the film, he gives the Khiladi nostalgia. Back in the 90s, in his films like KKK and Mohra, Akshay showed that Indian heroes can do the spinning back kicks and use the Nunchaku with as much ease as the Van Dammes . Vidyut takes that legacy forward and proves what Tony Jaa and Scott Adkins can do, he can do as well.

The introduction of Vidyut is nothing less than a celebration of his histrionics. This commando can do handstand pushups, one leg squats, spartan push ups with as much ease as walking in the garden. His intro fight is easily the best choreographed action sequence in Bollywood for a long time and matches the global standards of martial arts action. The ease with which he carries out his back flips, corkscrew kick, jumping through a car window and over it, vidyut makes all so-called action heroes Salman and Ajay look like school-going kids. People run on road, Vidyut runs on people!

JTW’s analysis of the Oscars 2013 – Silver Linings Playbook

The 85th Academy Awards (colloquially known as the Oscars) concluded on February 24, 2013 at the lavish Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, marking the end to the highly-publicized awards season and to the intense lobbying that marks the pre-Oscars period. And as is the case with every year’s edition, the 2013 Oscars witnessed their share of expected wins and surprises (both pleasant and unpleasant). So here’s my recap of this year’s Oscar-nominated films. Tanqeed members may or may not have seen these films; for those who haven’t, consider this as a recommendation/warning against the said films.

NOTE : I have not seen all the Oscar-nominated films, and will give my views only on those which I have seen.

SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK

Unlike a lot of other people, I had never been in awe of David O. Russell. Blame it on the fact that I’ve seen only one of his movies – the excellent The Fighter - which isn’t really enough. Plus, Bradley Cooper? You mean that The Hangover guy? I’ve never liked the series much (The Hangover Part 2 was downright horrible), so there was the “eh?” factor. Plus there was Jennifer Lawrence, who wasn’t that special in my view – great in The Hunger Games, average in X-Men: First Class, and intensely over-rated in Winter’s Bone.
