A Film With the Kapoor Cousins – Rajeev Masand’s Column

Tabu has always insisted that she’d much rather stay at home, her nose buried in books, than spend her days on movie sets where she doesn’t feel challenged.

Soon after returning from Cannes where she will attend an out-of-competition gala screening of Bombay Talkies, the portmanteau film she’s directed a 27-minute segment for, Zoya Akhtar is likely to finally wrap up the script of her next feature in which she hopes to cast Ranbir Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. Akhtar has reportedly been working tirelessly with her writing partner (and Taalash director) Reema Kagti on this script, while still managing to squeeze in short Goa holidays every few months.

According to sources close to Kareena Kapoor, the actress has been “hounding” Zoya to finalise the script so that they can dive into the film “right away”. Ranbir, meanwhile, who is committed to completing Abhinav Kashyap’s Besharam before starting to shoot Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet, also has projects with Imtiaz Ali and Anurag Basu lined up. Still, he is believed to have “reacted very positively” when Zoya first narrated the germ of the idea, and has apparently asked her to bring him the finished script when it is done.

Zoya’s project, which could be the first to star the two cousins together, is apparently an ensemble piece with a large cast. She is aware that getting Ranbir and Kareena on board is only the first hurdle; the second is coordinating their dates with those of the “massive” supporting cast she has lined up.

Best Male and Female performers of 2012- My views.

2012 has been a fascinating year. Few films had unprecedented box office success as well as audience’s acceptance, while few films did not really set the box office on fire but surely placed themselves in hearts of audience. Here are my bests of 2012 performances.

Male –

5. Sharman Joshi in Ferrari Ki Sawaari- In this small little heart warming film, Sharman Joshi plays a very adorable father and a martinet son. He packs an excellent performance and he has instant connect too!

4. Aamir Khan in Talaash- As a confused and depressed cop, Aamir Khan shines once again in a role which has its own oxymoronic rhythm. There are many layers to his characters and Aamir conveys his emotions through right blend of expressions and diction. He is not a perfectionist for nothing!

3. Irrfaan Khan in Paan Singh Tomar- Irrfan Khan is a veteran actor is a very obvious statement. In Paan Singh Tomar, Irrfan Khan once again delivers a riveting performance as the guy who has lost his patience when he is been rejected by police officer for demanding a basic and ethical action against illegal on-goings! A Significant performance in a significant film!

2. Ranbir Kapoor in Barfi- As the mute, deaf, charming and happy guy, Ranbir kapoor makes you feel his character.

Talaash for a brilliant suspense thriller continues….

Posting on behalf of Anas Ghayas
Expectations were high and an interesting marketing campaign chosen by the dynamic Khan gave indications that we are in for another WTF-ending after Kahaani early this year. Kahaani had its issues but Aamir Khan at the helm meant he might topple that, despite reports of plot being similar to Kahaani.

Talaash is an interestingly leisured movie that is to be watched and understood for its deep rooting somber mood rather than edge of seat thriller. Much to the chagrin of Indian movie goer.Long shots works well with tone of the movie however with some tighter scissors, it would have being a much better than it ended out to be. Here are a few I would like to discuss :

1. The scene where Aamir confronts Shernaz Patel when he finds that “Pagal women” with this wife apparently taking to their son . The problem lies in lines which Shernaz Patel mouths, you kinda get the feeling these lines will replay in the flash back at the climax .

2. Kareena’s Da vinci coded line in the lift to Aamir about Shashi’s whereabouts and Aamir deciphering them like a genius next morning.
