Before Kai Po Che – Rajeev Masand’s Gossip Column

If all goes well, Aishwarya Rai should begin working on her comeback project sometime this year.

Referring to the uncertainties of the business and its ability to surprise even veteran players, William Goldman, the Oscar- winning screenwriter of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, had once famously said: “In Hollywood, no one knows anything.” This is true of Bollywood as well.

The success of Kai Po Che has reinforced the fact that even successful stars and established producers can be wrong in their assessment of a script’s potential. Director Abhishek Kapoor is being lauded for his decision to cast non-stars as his leads, but few are aware that he had, in fact, approached big actors for the film before having to settle for a relatively unknown ensemble.

According to industry sources, Imran Khan, Shahid Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor were all presented with the script. But each of them is believed to have separately said ‘no’ to Abhishek on the grounds that the story didn’t convince them. Ranbir, in particular, who has displayed a knack for picking quality projects so far, not only turned down the film, but also allegedly told Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani that he was “surprised” they were thinking of producing the movie (Abhishek was originally developing the project for Excel Entertainment).

It is hard to tell how much Farhan and Ritesh were influenced by Ranbir’s feelings when they finally decided to pass on Kai Po Che.

Movies You Watched This Month – March 2013

kpc

Synopsis: The movie starts off with the three friends Ishaan, Govind and Omi wanting to start a sports shop. They also manage to start a cricket academy in the adjacent ground that they find. Ishaan finds Ali, a kid with immense batting potential and wants to groom him to play at the Ranji level. Govind gets involved with Ishaan’s sister while tutoring her. Unable to pay back the loan Omi has to get involved in his uncle’s political party.

Some scenes are good like the whole India Vs Australia 2001 Cricket match helping heal the broken friendship and Ishaan’s sister scolding him and the scenes following Omi’s parents death.

The whole Muslim kid angle and a lot of scenes involving the kid seemed a bit forced or deliberate. There are some scenes which seemed a bit too much like a Kendriya Vidyalaya school not having a physical education class and wanting to have this sports shop/academy do a presentation so as to have Cricket training for 1000 students? There is surprisingly a huge crowd for a local match. Ishaan wanting to get the kid because there is a cricket match (where selectors are coming to watch) during riots seemed totally ridiculous.

Why I didn’t take to Kai Po Che

In one of the scenes from the movie, Govind tells Ishaan that he shouldn’t expect Ali to be copybook while playing his shots on the cricket field.

The director might not have intended the irony in this telling remark.

I am a fan of the book and consider it to be Chetan Bhagat’s best along with Five Point Someone. So had high expectations from the movie, especially after the glowing (to put it mildly) reviews. But the movie left me shifting in my seat impatiently for most of its 2 hour and something duration. In effect it felt like the lengthiest movie I have seen in some time.

I am terribly disappointed by Abhishek Kapoor’s adaptation of the book, and also the way the critics have absolutely ignored what’s lacking in the narrative- spontaneity, irony, energy, and inventiveness- the four things that made the book so entertaining.

It can be seen that the director has spent a considerable amount of time and effort on creating the visual ambience that the book managed through just words. But in doing so he has made the narrative so slow, and so long drawn that he had to cut down the essence of plot as shown in the book.

Kai Po Che! Movie Review by Rajeev Masand

Rating: 4

Cast: Sushant Singh Rajput, Amit Sadh, Rajkumar Yadav, Amrita Puri, Manav Kaul

Director: Abhishek Kapoor

Its title derived from that cry of victory yelled out when an opponent has been defeated in a kite flying challenge, Kai Po Che translates literally as “Gotcha!” An apt expression, perhaps, to describe the home run director Abhishek Kapoor delivers through this moving film about a friendship challenged by real-life tragedies.

Rooting a simple story in a realistic middle-class world far removed from the glossy surfaces of Rock On!, Kapoor can’t shake off his fascination for buddy pictures, but in Kai Po Che we’re treated to a more honest, assured portrait of friendship that never feels as conventional as his National Award-winning previous film.

Based on a novel by Chetan Bhagat, the film, set in the year 2000, focuses on three childhood pals who pool in their skills and resources to set up a sports shop-cum-cricket academy in their Ahmedabad neighborhood. A brilliant sportsman in his school days, hot-headed slacker Ishaan (Sushant Singh Rajput) commits himself to coaching young hopefuls. Omi (Amit Sadh) taps his local politician uncle for a loan to set up the enterprise, while business-minded Govind (Rajkumar Yadav) takes on the responsibility of maintaining accounts.

Kai Po Che and Zilla Ghaziabad Boxoffice Collections Thread

Kai Po Che Decent Opening Zilla Ghaziabad Dull Opening

Friday 22nd February 2013 12.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Koi Po Che had a decent opening of around 40-45% while Zilla Ghaziabad was dull across the board with around 20% Kai Po Che was helped by good collections in the premium multiplex areas of Mumbai, Pune and Delhi NCR though some other parts of the country like UP and Punjab were low. The film had no face value but the promotion created awareness especially in the big cities where collections are much better.

Zilla Ghaziabad was dull in the morning and stands no chance at the box office as a film like Kai Po Che can improve as the day goes along but Zilla Ghaziabad being an action film has limited upside.

Both films have Hollywood release A Good Day To Die Hard for competition which also did not open well apart from a few centres in East Punjab where there is the novelty of the film being dubbed in Punjabi for the first time.

Sanket’s Review: “Kai Po Che” has unfeigned charm.

Cast: Sushant Singh Rajput, Amit Sadh, Raj Kumar yadav, Amrita Puri.

Director: Abhishek Kapoor

Length : 2 hrs approximately

Borrowed from the written material of Chetan Bhagat’s “3 Mistakes of my life”, director Abhishek Kapoor’s cinematic adaptation KAI PO CHE remains mostly faithful to the novel. The film traces various situations which draws wedge between the three friends with different ambition and different responsibility. What makes KAI PO CHE a must-watch are the beautiful and heartfelt moments that stays with you for an eternity.

Not taking even a single minute to spoon-feed about the characters, the film starts remarkably well. In-fact the proceedings are so easy to relate that it is only in the intermission period when you find your own breathes. The first half is simply excellent with the scenes being supported hugely by Amit Trivedi’s musical magic. The solemn situations create the tension and the intermission point will leave you uneasy. So far, so brilliant!

Its only post-intermission, like many films, KAI PO CHE takes bit of a backseat. In-fact, to be more precise, its only in last 30 minutes where things goes bit off the mark. The portion where the female lead gets pregnant is too contrived and unwanted in the film.

Kai Po Che! Movie Review By Taran Adarsh

A Chetan Bhagat novel is akin to reading a screenplay. You start visualizing the characters, the occurrences and episodes, the myriad emotions… like it were occurring in front of your eyes. What also makes Bhagat’s novella interesting are its characters and the fact that they are hugely identifiable since they are based in India.

After ‘one night @ the call center’ [HELLO] and ‘five point someone’ [3 IDIOTS], the author’s much-talked-about novel ‘the 3 mistakes of my life’ gets picked up for the big screen adaptation called KAI PO CHE. So what does the title [KAI PO CHE] mean, a question I have been asked more than a few times by cineastes. Translated simply, it’s a call of triumph in Gujarati, when one kite flier cuts another’s kite. Besides sounding different to the ears, the title metaphorically suits the premise of the story that’s set in Gujarat. And how close is the motion picture to the much-acclaimed novel? Well, the episodes and characters are the same, except that Abhishek Kapoor tweaks and fine-tunes it [adapted for the screen by Pubali Chaudhuri, Supratik Sen, Abhishek Kapoor, Chetan Bhagat], since the medium is cinema.

KAI PO CHE cannot be slotted in any particular genre, in my opinion.
