Sanket’s review: “Saheb Biwi aur Gangster returns” isn’t exactly satisfying, though has a high share of positives.
Cast: Jimmy Shergill, Raj Babbar, Mahie Gill, Irrfan Khan, Soha Ali Khan.
Director: Tigmanshu Dhulia
Length: 2.20 hours approx.
Now the prequel to this film that released in September 2011, wasn’t exactly great film, but it had a strong story-line which kept the moments glued and the film engaging. What lacked there was the sort of performances which would have taken film much higher. Apart from Randeep Hooda, no one really managed a noteworthy performance. The sequel has different thing to say. The film has terrific performances but saddles down with the script and screenplay.
The film starts very well with each character being described smartly. But the film drags along a lot with few scenes. Despite of humorous dialogues imposed at most of the places, yet, the scenes in this half particularly look dull. The film goes on and on and on and at-east two times gives you chance to peep into your watch. At 85 minutes first half, there are scenes which could have been easily trimmed. Too much time is given to express Mahie Gill’s bold and seductive character. However, there are few scenes that will leave you in splits like the one when the Politician gets worked up at-least twice, once when he isn’t able to get the adjustment of the webcam and the next time when he is unable to exit while he is watching porn.

Cast: Mahie Gill, Soha Ali Khan, Jimmy Shergill, Irrfan Khan
Director: Tigmanshu Dhulia
With ‘Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns’, director Tigmanshu Dhulia delivers another earthy cocktail of power games, bedroom politics, and palace intrigue. Only the stakes are higher in this sequel; the love is tainted from the start, and there’s even vengeance thrown in for good measure. Indeed the film is gripping for the most part, if you’re willing to overlook some convoluted stretches.
The saheb and biwi from the 2011 film are back: Aditya Singh (Jimmy Shergill) is wheelchair-bound after being left paralysed in the earlier film’s bloody climax, while his alcoholic, unhinged wife Madhavi (Mahie Gill) is the elected MLA. Yet the equation between husband and wife is constantly shifting. Aditya is recovering from the accident, determined to get back on his feet. He wrests control from Madhavi, who can’t seem to lift herself from a drunken stupor on most days. A manipulative Aditya is trying to round up the other royals in the state to their advantage and grab political power, and part of his plan is to marry the soft-natured princess Ranjana (Soha Ali Khan).

Shalu’s Review of Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns
Although I liked Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster moderately it felt it could have been better. In the sequel, Tigmanshu Dhulia fixes all that needed to be fixed the first time round and comes out with a cracker of a film which is bigger and better, much better.
Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns starts where the prequel ended. Saheb/Aditya (Jimmy Sheirgill) is crippled but does not let his disability stop him from ruling his ‘praja’ with an iron hand.Biwi/Madhavi (Mahie Gill) is as alcoholic and brazen as ever, strongly resenting still being a pawn of Saheb’s despite becoming the MLA of her district. Enter the Gangster/Indrajit (Irrfan Khan) who is an ex-royal and dreams of earning back the lost glory which was snatched away a few generations ago by Saheb’s family. That Saheb has set his heart on marrying princess Ranjana (Soha Ali Khan), Indrajit’s lady love, does not help matters.
It is difficult to put Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns in one genre. Is it a revenge tale or two love triangles playing simultaneously? Is it a political drama or a take on dying royalty and desperate royals? Watching this film is like watching a thrilling game on a chess board where each and every move is unpredictable, and one is left wondering till the last minute as to who will finally say ‘checkmate’.

Subsequent to the colossal critical success of the first part, SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER [in 2011], Tigmanshu Dhulia, an avant garde storyteller of the present times, dives into his first sequel, SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER RETURNS. However, unlike the trend of attempting sequels without connecting with the earlier part, SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER RETURNS makes an effort to take the story of Saheb, Biwi and Gangster forward, with additional characters this time around.
SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER RETURNS is a sequel in the truest sense. The backdrop of aristocracy remains integral. But romance is notches higher this time. Also, politics, jealousy, revenge, betrayal and deceit are integrated in the screenplay, besides drama and sensuality, of course. However, unlike the first part, sensuality is toned down considerably this time. Ready for fireworks?
After losing his legs, Saheb [Jimmy Sheirgill] becomes wheelchair-bound and more unpleasant and wicked, particularly towards his alcoholic Biwi [Mahie Gill], who is now a politician. In walks Gangster [Irrfan Khan], also of royal lineage, who is determined to settle scores with Saheb.
Tigmanshu is synonymous with power-packed drama and he transports you to the forefront of the murky political games people play in SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER RETURNS. The gluttony for power is evident at the commencement itself and the venomous games these characters play add effectiveness to the premise.
