Ek Thi Daayan Movie Review By Rajeev Masand

Rating:
April 19. 2013
Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Kalki Koechlin, Huma Qureshi, Pavan Malhotra, Vishesh Tiwari
Director: Kannan Iyer
A very different beast from Makdee, his charming directorial debut from eleven years ago, Ek Thi Daayan, co-written and co-produced by Vishal Bhardwaj, sees the filmmaker revisit the mythology of witches once again. But where Makdee was an old-fashioned fable about a village witch who supposedly turned humans into animals, Daayan, set in the modern, urban world, is intended as an eerie supernatural thriller.
First-time director Kannan Iyer sets up the film nicely, introducing us to our protagonist Bobo (Emraan Hashmi), who appears to have everything…a successful career as a magician, a supportive fiancée, Tamra (Huma Qureshi), and even a young boy they have chosen to adopt. Yet, Bobo is haunted by hallucinations of his dead sister. When he delves into his past through hypnosis, he must confront his memories of the mysterious woman, Diana (Konkona Sen Sharma), who was hired to babysit his sister and him as kids.
Iyer does a good job of conveying the curious, suspicious nature of an eleven-year-old obsessed with the idea of the dark side. When Diana enters their lives, all young Bobo needs is a clue to confirm his theory, and Konkona plays up the intrigue deliciously.

Ek Thi Daayan – Box Office Thread
Ek Thi Daayan had an average opening of around 30-40%. The opening was better than last week’s two releases Nautanki Saala and Commando (only at multiplexes, not single screens) but lower than Chasme Baddoor released a couple of weeks back.
The opening is not upto the mark for an Emraan Hashmi starrer but that is probably due to the fact that the promos did not show that it was a usual Emraan Hashmi film or an out and out horror film which would have added hugely to opening.
The film is pretty safe as far as recovery is concerned due to low costs but theatrically it will depend on what happens on Saturday at multiplexes as it will find it tough going at single screens.

My Review of Ek Thi Daayan

Starring – Emraan Hashmi, Konkana Sen, Huma Qureshi and Kalki.
Director – Kannan Iyer
Here is my short review of Ek thi Daayan. As most of us may have guessed it, it’s a supernatural horror movie, directed by Kannan Iyer and produced by Vishal Bhardwaj and Ekta Kapoor. The expectations were decent for the movie from the audience and the movie does gives more than expected.
Emraan plays a magician, with Huma being his love interest. His magic tricks being very amusing, he is one of the most famous too. The 1st half is about Emraan’s flashback from his childhood memories and 2nd half about his present and how he deals with them.
I do not want to divulge even a bit of story, as it may tantamount to spoiler. So I would just go ahead with my conclusion without an actual review. It’s based on the witchcraft, black magic, etc. The story is breezy, enthralling and engaging. There are no dull moments! Yes, though being in a horror genre, the movie does not have dull moments. It’s a rarity which this movie could achieve in this particular genre. It has couple of likeable songs but doesn’t spoil the flow.

Ek Thi Daayan Movie Review By Taran Adarsh
Ekta Kapoor has earned the title of a prolific producer, attempting films on varied subjects in a relatively short span — biopic [THE DIRTY PICTURE], gangsters [SHOOTOUT AT LOKHANDWALA and ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI], horror [RAGINI MMS], laughathons [KYAA KOOL HAIN HUM and KYAA SUPER KOOL HAIN HUM], realistic [LOVE SEX AUR DHOKHA]… the enterprising producer now adds yet another genre to her remarkable repertoire: Supernatural thriller. A genre that’s intimidating as well as thrilling.
Do ghosts/spirits exist? What about black magic? Is it a myth? Does it really work? Last year, films like RAAZ 3 [a fading actress indulges in black magic to settle scores with an upcoming actress], TALAASH [the spirit of a dead woman kills the perpetrators of the crime] and more recently, AATMA [the fight between a woman and her dead husband over their child] took the spectator into the world of aatmas and spirits. EK THI DAAYAN may come across as yet another fare that talks of ghosts/witches, occult and the likes, but it is, perhaps, the first Hindi movie that presents witchcraft most realistically. Also, it’s one of the most eerie experiences to unfold on the Bollywood screen.
Our country is pierced with superstitions, fallacies and erroneous beliefs.

Not Alone in Bollywood – Rajeev Masand’s Gossip Column

Last week, just hours after the Supreme Court upheld the conviction of Sanjay Dutt on charges of illegal possession of firearms, sentencing the Munnabhai star to five years’ imprisonment, a swarm of the actor’s film industry friends had gathered at his Bandra home. Over the course of the next few days, producers, directors and actors trickled in, offering solidarity and volunteering to speak up in defence of Dutt as part of a campaign his wife Manyata was reportedly mobilising to plead for the actor’s pardon.
Dutt himself has been calm, say friends who visited him, and seems concerned only about providing for his family. The actor allegedly took at least two filmmakers to a quiet corner, urging them to promise that they would direct a film for his home banner. “I’m the only breadwinner of my family and I could serve up to three-and-a-half years,” he reportedly told them. “I need to make sure my family is taken care of.”
On Sunday, Dutt was paid a visit by his old friend Salman Khan, who had arrived the same morning from the US where he was undergoing medical treatment. Salman, whose own legal woes kept him busy the rest of the week, is believed to have assured Sanjay Dutt that he would “always” look out for the star’s family “if the situation arose”.
