Before Kai Po Che – Rajeev Masand’s Gossip Column

If all goes well, Aishwarya Rai should begin working on her comeback project sometime this year.

Referring to the uncertainties of the business and its ability to surprise even veteran players, William Goldman, the Oscar- winning screenwriter of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, had once famously said: “In Hollywood, no one knows anything.” This is true of Bollywood as well.

The success of Kai Po Che has reinforced the fact that even successful stars and established producers can be wrong in their assessment of a script’s potential. Director Abhishek Kapoor is being lauded for his decision to cast non-stars as his leads, but few are aware that he had, in fact, approached big actors for the film before having to settle for a relatively unknown ensemble.

According to industry sources, Imran Khan, Shahid Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor were all presented with the script. But each of them is believed to have separately said ‘no’ to Abhishek on the grounds that the story didn’t convince them. Ranbir, in particular, who has displayed a knack for picking quality projects so far, not only turned down the film, but also allegedly told Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani that he was “surprised” they were thinking of producing the movie (Abhishek was originally developing the project for Excel Entertainment).

It is hard to tell how much Farhan and Ritesh were influenced by Ranbir’s feelings when they finally decided to pass on Kai Po Che.

Blast from the Past: Javed Akhtar’s Filmfare Interview from 2001

Today is Javed Akhtar’s birthday. So check out his Filmfare Interview from August 2001.

What’s the good verse… Javed Akhtar on record

He’s the purrfect sound byte engineer. Shooting from the lip, narrating stories with easy facility, when it comes to word play, Javed Akhtar’s the raconteur for all reasons. Right from crafting the lacerating Mere paas maa hai (Deewaar) dialogue to the gossamer soft Kuch na kaho (1942-A Love Story) to the pacifist Panchhi nadiya (Refugee), Jadoo as wife Shabana Azmi calls him, words come to him as naturally as waves lapping a shore.

He prefers the old-fashioned way of putting pen to paper rather than the new fangled word processor. Yet he’s hip enough to cotton on to the lingua franca spoken by new generation directors, 20-somethings like son Farhan and daughter Zoya. From Ramesh Sippy (Andaz) to Rohan Sippy (Kuch Na Kaho), he’s seamlessly straddled two generations of mind-sets.

Rapier sharp-retorts and amiable jibes keep the air filled chez the Azmi/Akhtars. On a cold, cold night, Javed saab steams up the fiza (his favourite word) with some hot-hot banter. Excerpts:

When Shabana and I got married, it was rather late in the day to have kids. Anyone in this country who has many children is less than a patriot

Have you turned producer with Dil Chahta Hai which your son Farhan is directing?

Shah Rukh and Shirish will never be best friends: Farah Khan

What we see today is an extremely successful woman, but not many know that you had a very difficult childhood.
My father Kamran Khan was a successful producer, director and actor in B-grade films. When I was born, we had three flats and were well-to-do. I was a pampered brat who used to go in an Impala to Linking Road to pick up a new LP every day. Mine was literally a ‘riches to rags’ story.

When I was five years old, my father made a film Aisa Bhi Hota Hai with Ayan Mukerjee’s father which was a big disaster. What we did not know at that time was that he had put all his money including our three flats at stake to make this movie When the film flopped, life changed overnight for us. My mother’s jewellery had to be sold, as also two of our flats. But the worst part was that my dad took to drinking and everything started to deteriorate.

My father stopped working and began to stay at home. He had always been the benefactor who looked after his entire joint family and was generous and helped people all the time. However he was also a very proud man who refused to go and ask people for work.

Salman is more popular than me: Aamir Khan

Salman is more popular than me: Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan is in Chicago for three months. In a candid mood, he tells TOI why he has been missing from the big screen for such a long duration, who his close friends are, among other things. Excerpts of an exclusive interview with the superstar...

You’ve been missing from the big screen for nearly two years!
When my next movie releases in November this year, it will actually be close to two years since Dhobi Ghat (January 2011). I have rarely done three movies one after another. I’m not used to that style of working. But since I was consumed with my television show for the better part of this year, the movies had to wait.

Raju (Hirani) has patiently waited for you for over a year!
Well, Raju is one of the best directors we have. He’s a friend and and I’m grateful to him for being so patient.

3 Idiots is the lone film in the `200-cr club.
Haan, yaar. What makes me even more happy is the fact that 3 Idiots crossed the `200-cr mark though it was released three years ago with just 1500 prints. I give full credit for this film to Raju. Many of the other films that are in the `100-cr club have released with more than double the number of prints (Bodyguard released with 3500 prints) and have still done lesser revenue than 3 Idiots.
