Milind’s Reflections: Cinematic Thoughts on the Year gone by-2012!

It is imperative to note that the year that went by was not one of the best years for Cinema as such.Neither the Hindi film-makers,nor the southern ones, especially Tamil directors shell out something spectacularly brilliant. One also cannot dispute the fact that inspite of nothing extraordinary, there was some splash in the pan and some films did steal the hearts with their sheer honesty!

The year started with a remake of an old-cult classic called Agneepath that had given Bachchan a national award. Hrithik was nowhere near the persona of Bachchan [that inspite of being itself irritating at times was superlative in terms of the emphatic portrayal of a character betrayed by life]. Agneepath was never about raw power, nor was Scarface from which it was partially inspired. These two films were about characters and their confrontation with life amidst a debate between the duty to do good and the necessity to outdo evil with evil. The film did boast of a few superlative performances like Rishi Kapoor who was good in his role and did bring out the emotion with aplomb.Hrithik disappointed.Nothing new in it as SRK in his role as Vijay had put up a miserable performance compared to Bachchan’s legendary portrayal of the same!

Year of the Khans, not: How the big Bolly men screwed up

This wasn’t just the year of the Bollywood man. Nah. Unless of course a cute Chaplin rip-off by Ranbir Kapoor can possibly measure up to a Kareena Kapoor munching cigarettes in Heroine or a Bipasha Basu jumping into, umm, whatever is the ghostly counterpart of a bed, with a maggot spewing ghoul in Raaz 3.

Be it Sunny Leone, who filmed a two hour movie breathing like she was just back from a 10-km run, or Vidya Balan who had the Bengali diction scurrying for cover behind a Bengali shotgun called ‘culture’, the Khans of the Bollywood world had stiff competition this year. And they fared quite miserably, at that. Though my pet hate would be Akshay Kumar trying to do a Dabangg in two films this year, here’s why the big five of Bollywood need to be sent back to film school again.

Saif Ali Khan in Cocktail: First things first, Saif Ali Khan is not hot. Even in any obtuse hypothetical world. And to make you believe that women, with those otherworldly abs like Deepika Padukone’s, would be dying to get into the sack with him, would be just a sad reminder of how aesthetically-challenged several Indian women are.

A point Dabangg 2 will most probably prove (about BO)

Dabangg2′s opening will be like of never heard before. That 31cr figure looks untouchable though, but a 55cr weekend in on cards. Be it single screens or multiplexes, opening weekend will be unimaginable! The 5 screener multiplexes can accommodate as many as 30 shows. The highest number of shows that a film got in multiplexes is ETT I believe. There is no film even closer to it. Dabangg2 might just break that record, thanks to its short length! The 9 screener PVR in Pune is aiming for 40 shows a day! I am still in state of shock!

Dabangg2 will also be proving one major point-

Many believes that ETT/Agneepath had advantage of first day being National Holiday, but no-body wanted to believe that there was equal sort of disadvantage both the films had to go through on its second day, which happened to be a working day! You cannot imagine a film like ETT to collect only 12.5-13cr on its second day. Whatever extravagant money ETT/AP collected on its first day, somewhere got counterbalanced on their respective second day, which was just like a monday. Yes, the business on this second day was more than what a normal monday does, but that is because the film is new in market.

EVA – Baap of ROI/trending method for BoxOffice

The first and foremost measure of performance that comes to one’s mind is profit/ROI- the accounting measure of performance. Someone has aptly said- profit is an opinion, not the fact. If this were not case , one would not have seen the debacle of big companies like Enron, World Com etc. All such companies managed their earnings well and have shown better performance in terms of ROI.

The thing is traditional measures ignore the definite requirement that the rate of return should be at least as high as the cost of capital. The cost of capital is the rate of return required to persuade the investor to make a given investment.Or a bare minimum margin which the investor expects by making a certain amount of investment.Economic Value Added (EVA) is a financial performance method to calculate the true economic profit of an investment. EVA can be calculated as net income minus a charge for the opportunity cost of the capital invested.

If EVA = 0 , Investment value neither added or eroded
EVA >1 , Investment value enhanced
EVA < 1 ,Investment value eroded.

The biggest catch of EVA is that it can be negative even for investments which have positive income!

Why Ek Tha Tiger is a Trending Flop

The 3 Khans are at a place right now where every film of theirs will open bigger than the last one, and the 100 cr figure is a foregone conclusion no matter how bad the film turns out to be (unless it is an ultra-offbeat one like Dhobi Ghat). In case of 5-day weekends like Ra.One, Bodyguard and Ek Tha Tiger, the 100 cr number is a joke. Here are some of the reasons why –

- A 5-day weekend means the film will release on a national holiday and then the weekend will follow. So in a way a film gets two weekends back to back and then the first weekday starts.

- Since these are festival releases starring the biggest stars of the country, they become ‘event films’ that more than 80% of the cinema going audience is interested in watching. Since the market in India is open to 350+ cr today for a big film, the potential of these films is huge.

- Festival releases get the benefit of not only holidays but also more spending capacity of the audience in the form of Diwali/Eid bonuses.

The points above are to illustrate why even an outrightly rejected film like Ra.One managed to earn Rs.

Ek Tha Tiger Has Huge Jump On Saturday

Ek Tha Tiger made huge strides on its third Saturday as it took a huge jump collecting around 2-2.25 crore nett. The collections were double of Friday at many places as the film jumped due to the non performance of Joker.

After Friday it seemed difficult that the film would get a 6 crore nett third weekend but now it will cruise past that total and may possibly even cross 7 crore nett for the third weekend.

Ek Tha Tiger will have collections close to 180 crore nett mark after its third weekend.

Ek Tha Tiger Third Friday Business

Ek Tha Tiger took a hit on its third Friday as it lost screens and its extensive release and that too with and extended nine day first week begins to tell.

The film collected in the range of 1.25 crore nett which is around 72% lower than last Friday. The collections now are just a bonus as the film has surpassed the distributor share of Three Idiots in just two weeks to become the highest earner in terms of distributor share in the history of Hindi cinema.

The film has also become the first film in history to cross the 20 crore share mark in Delhi/UP. The nett and gross collections will stay below Three Idiots by around 7-8%
