Movie Memories – Theaters Where You Saw lot of Movies

maheshwari

Maheshwari/Parameshwari was the the best theater in Hyderabad. Have memories of watching a majority of movies there. Saw Ajooba, Sanam Bewafa, Saajan, Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, Pyar Ka Tarana, Khuda Gawah, Suryavanshi, Khal Nayak, Darr, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Anjaam, Prem, 1942 A Love Story, Yeh Dillagi, Raja, Suraksha, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Rangeela, Deewar, Shakti, Zamana Deewana, Judwaa, Auzaar and Dil Se.

The early part of the song is shot at Maheshwari/Parameshwari theater complex. You can see that Saajan is playing. It is from a Ram Gopal Varma directed Telugu movie Money starring Chakravarthy, Renuka Shahane and Paresh Rawal. Its a good song too with some good music.

The Essence of Being SRK!

The classical Hollywood pattern of dealing in the fate of its protagonists and vivisecting them aptly summarizes their narrative. The story of old HW classics was woven around a simple story but it brought out almost all the qualities that life must have and all the emotions a human being might go through. This was an effective narrative pattern that encompassed an array of emotional flavors and focused on the quitessential aspect of a story–the climax. But before the climax there was always a mishap, there was always a chance that a misunderstanding would erupt, that a point may arrive where the boy may never meet the girl. But then it all culminated into a happy ending. HW classics thrived on this hope.

SRK’s story carries enough clues from such emphatic narratives and presents to us a most exhilarating canvas of work where the most important attribute is the emotions of a character.Rather than following the novel pattern of neo-noir that hides the important aspects of a story till the end until it unravels them all,SRK has been that simple story that had accurate pauses, exquisite moments, terrific narrative and immaculate presentation. His story as a star on celluloid might be seen from two perspectives–one from the outside taking the superstar angle in contention and the other from within where you can palpate the immense contribution he has had in bringing the emotional quotients to the forefront. He might have gone “OTT” as his detractors suggest but even in that the emotional saga never lost.People do not understand that if it takes a Sunny Deol to shout at the top of his voice and go mad[which can be termed OTT] to display his anger in a Ghaatak,a certain SRK also needs to express his emotions in a manner that the softer ones touch the heart.Albeit it is no surprise that displaying the softer side of a character is far more a daunting task than to express anger that comes naturally to almost all of us.

Blast from the Past: Sunny Deol Interview after Gadar

Today is Sunny Deol’s birthday. So check out this interview from Filmfare Oct 2001 where he talks about the success of Gadar, regretting doing Yash Chopra’s Darr and Rajkumar Santoshi not being his friend.

It’s raining smiles at the Deol household. In the wake of Gadar-Ek Prem Katha, papa Dharmendra can’t stop gushing about his son, “He’s been such a good boy. I’m happy that his hard work has been acknowledged finally.” Bobby D. exults simply, “My brother is the best.” Chez the Deols, Sunny D’ssons Karan and Rajveer throw punches in
the air. The man of the moment is oblivious to all the praise though. Producers, directors and sundry industry types pour in pell-mell. Inveigling Sunny Deol to assent to an interview is as daunting as root canal surgery. My interminable hours of waiting for Godot finally pay off. Before leaving for Hyderabad, where he’s scheduled to shoot for Guddu Dhanoa’s Gandhi, he finaly relents to a chit-o-chat. Accuse him of throwing attitude and he says disarmingly, “I’m not being inaccessible or difficult. I’m just too busy.” Ulp, uh, okay. I toss up my first query:

The industry is finally touting you as the numero uno. Do you feel vindicated?

Scene of the Week: Darr

Check out this excellent scene from Darr. Well directed by Yash Chopra, well shot by Manmohan Singh and what I love the most – the background music by Shiv-Hari especially the Tabla beats.

I know I had posted this elsewhere (that video does not work now) and for those who had already seen this scene check out another scene from the same movie.

I just got lucky, says SRK on 20 years in B-Town

On this day two decades ago a new Hindi film superstar emerged: Bollwood’s all-time favourite romantic hero Shah Rukh Khan, who debuted with Deewana. On completing 20 years, SRK says he just “got lucky” and admits he has made mistakes all along.

Shah Rukh who entered filmdom with Deewana, which released June 25, 1992, tweeted,

Superstardom, disappointment and controversies – Delhi guy SRK has seen it all in his celebrityhood.

For Shah Rukh, it’s been two decades in Bollywood, but his tryst with showbiz began in 1988, the year he started his journey with TV series Fauji, after being trained at The Barry John’s Acting Studio. Next year he featured in another successful show Circus and Doosra Keval.

People loved his act on small screen, he won hearts as a crazy lover in Deewana, in which he was competing with none other than Rishi Kapoor in the lead role. But lady luck was smiling on him and audiences loved his chemistry with late Divya Bharti. The song Aisi deewangi dekhi nahin kabhi picturised on them became a chartbuster.

Deewana turned out to be a huge hit at the box office, and won SRK a Filmfare best male debut award.

There was no looking back thereafter – only more films, more hits, and more awards for Shah Rukh.

Casting doubts

Thanks to hithere for the link.

Besides talent and luck and everything else in between rejection is one factor that helped Shah Rukh Khan unlike anyone else. For the superstar that he is today, Shah Rukh made a career of accepting roles that were rejected by other two Khans. The two films that clearly announced his arrival Darr (1993) and Baazigar (1993) were supposed to feature Aamir and Salman Khans respective. Ever wondered how things would turned out if these films continued with the originally desired casting?

Casting makes all the difference. It’s impossible to imagine anyone else but Prithviraj Kapoor as Akbar in Mughl-e-Azam (1960). Better still, close your eyes and concoct Danny Denzongpa as Gabbar in Sholay (1975). It isn’t the same, right? One of things about exceptional casting is that it makes everything else easier. The patriarch of the first family of films whom everybody addressed as papaji in real life, Prithviraj Kapoor became Akbar to such an extent that he refused to appear on the sets till he felt like the emperor. Of course, no one had any issue with that. Also you needed someone as larger than life as Prithviraj Kapoor to infuse life into Abkar when you have Dilip Kumar as Salim.

Yash Chopra in conversation with Uday Chopra – Darr

Today is Uday Chopra’s birthday. I was looking for one of his songs to post as Song of the Day and I found this video. I had seen this video once long time back. Here they are talking about the movie Darr and Uday reveals Dead Calm as the inspiration for Darr.

Yash Chopra also says that Aamir had signed Darr and that there was a mahurat too but then Aamir declined to do the role because his fans, friends, relatives advised him against doing a negative role.

Now some of you might know that I was involved in a discussion on NG sometime back regarding Darr on this very topic. Sunny is supposed to have been very angry during the making of Darr as SRK was being given preferential treatment. But what’s funny is that Sunny (voice over) saying he enjoyed working in the movie and that it was like a picnic. Now I think this was from the Making of Darr which was telecast on Doordarshan back then before the release of the movie. May be he was paid to say that but its really funny when seen in context of his later interviews. Ths Sunny Deol voiceover is at 4 min 55 sec.

Playing villain one of the greatest highs: Shah Rukh

It started with Abbas-Mustan thriller Baazigar in which SRK played a negative role. Yash Chopra’s Darr (1993), a psychological thriller, was the story of an obsessive lover played by Shah Rukh, to get his lady love Juhi Chawla, who was already married to another man. A similar storyline in Anjaam had the actor play a bad guy opposite Madhuri Dixit in the female lead.

Baazigar and Darr took his career to new heights and established him as an acclaimed actor in Bollywood.’
