New Beginnings with Old Friends – Rajeev Masand’s Gossip Column

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif no longer seem to be trying to hide the fact that they are a couple.

Harman Baweja (remember him?), who hasn’t had a release since 2009’s colossal dud What’s Your Raashee?, was spotted partying in Vancouver recently during a Bollywood awards ceremony. The actor, who has dated Priyanka Chopra and Shamita Shetty and is now reportedly seeing Bipasha Basu, was noticed chatting up pretty locals and happily posing for pictures with star-struck fans. Bipasha was in London while her beau made the most of his Canadian vacation.

Since her break-up with John Abraham two years ago, Bipasha has admitted that she’s been dating frequently, and actors like Shahid Kapoor, Harman and Hollywood’s Josh Hartnett are some of the men she has been linked to. It is also a well-known fact that Bipasha has renewed her friendship with exes Milind Soman and Dino Morea, who her friends say she was categorically asked to “stay far away from” while she was with John.

Speaking of Dino Morea, he is believed to have signed up for—wait for it—a theatre acting course in Delhi. Too little too late? Dino has apparently told friends that he is taking a three-month break from “the scene” to “recharge my batteries”. He successfully transitioned last year into a producer with Jism 2, on which he had Pooja Bhatt as his partner.

Aatma Movie Review – Roma Heer & Gautam Batra

aatma review

Gautam Batra: Aatma(A) i.e. latest supernatural horror movie to hit the cinemas star Bipasha Basu, Nawazuddin Siddiqui& Doyel Dhawan as main characters and is written & directed by Suparn Verma, who promises to take horror genre to new level with this movie. Aatma is produced under the banner of Wide Frame Pictures and carries decent expectationsSo lets discuss with Roma Heer, whether Aatma is a must watch for you this weekend or not.

Roma Heer: Aatma hardly takes horror to next level instead its a big letdown & disappointment for those who love to watch movies falling in this genre.

Gautam Batra: O My Gaawd! that was seriously not expected after hearing big statements from Director saahab about movie!

Roma Heer: Seriously! i remember Mr. Suparn said that he is proud of his movie as a director as well as an audience. He also said that he has completed scripted in long time of 9 years & it will take horror to new level. Sadly, Aatma evokes laughter many times at its so called scary & chilling scenes.

Gautam Batra:So what is the plot of Aatma & how was the Screenplay?

Roma Heer: Aatma is a story about Abhay(Nawazuddin Siddiqui) & Maya (Bipasha Basu) who have a cute daughter Nia(Doyel Dhawan).

Aatma Movie Review by Rajeev Masand

Rating: 1.5

Cast: Bipasha Basu, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Doyel Dhawan, Shernaz Patel, Tilottama Shome, Jaideep Ahlawat, Shiv Subramaniam, Darshan Jariwala

Director: Suparn Verma

95 minutes have seldom felt so long, as they do while watching Aatma. This curious but ultimately predictable supernatural thriller fails to escape genre conventions, falling into the same trap that so many of its predecessors have.

Bipasha Basu is a single mother struggling to protect her daughter (Doyel Dhawan) from the otherworldly grasp of her dead ex-husband (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), who wants to take the little girl away with him. It’s an intriguing premise, ripe with emotional potential, but writer-director Suparn Verma sticks to tried-and-tested gimmicks, never offering an original suspenseful experience.

Low on scares and unfolding at a snail-like pace, Aatma recycles familiar horror-movie imagery to little impact. In one relatively chilling scene that’s unfortunately given away in the trailer, a terrified Bipasha is confronted with the sight of her daughter walking the balcony ledge, as Nawazuddin’s spirit beckons her to jump.

Moments like these are few and far between in this lazy film that doesn’t even create the required atmospherics for a moody thriller. The resolution is underwhelming, a handful of fine supporting actors (Jaideep Ahlawat, Shernaz Patel, Tillotama Shome, Shiv Subramaniam, Darshan Jariwala) are wasted, and in the end you’re struck by the sheer futility of the enterprise.

Aatma Movie Review by Taran Adarsh

2

The horror genre is getting increasingly popular with the top ranks in Bollywood. From A-list actors to reputed production houses, the output of horror movies has, all of a sudden, shown an upward trend in recent years. Besides, horror in Hindi films is no longer limited to ghosts or skeletons. It’s about projecting the emotion called fear most valiantly.

With the 3D technology making a big splash across the globe, the trend of making horror films in 3D has already caught on in Bollywood. Vikram Bhatt’s HAUNTED, DANGEROUS ISHHQ and RAAZ 3 and Ramgopal Varma’s BHOOT RETURNS narrated spooky tales in 3D. While I am not against this technology, I am glad Suparn Verma decided against making AATMA in 3D because this one’s a psychological thriller — more of a human drama — and the 3D glasses would’ve only acted as a blockade.

First things first, AATMA is *not* the quintessential horror film. It’s not about a haunted house or a tormented spirit thirsting for vengeance. It has layers. It has supernatural elements. It tackles an abusive relationship. It’s about a strong emotional bonding between a mother and child. Primarily, it’s the fight between a woman and her dead husband over their child.
