Khiladi 786 Has Disappointing Day One

Friday 8th December 2012 22.00 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Khildi 786 is set to have a disappointing day one. The film was never likely to have a huge first day but the early first day figures are set to be well below the mark. A Talaash sort of opening or 5-10% less would have been okay but the early figures coming in from Delhi/UP, East Punjab and Rajasthan suggest that even a 10 crore nett total is not on the cards.

The figures from other circuits may surprise but its unlikely as if an Akshay Kumar starrer is weak in Delhi and East Punjab where his starrers are normally so strong then other places will find it tough going.

A likely scenario is a first day total between 8-9 crore nett and if night shows are strong it may add another 25 lakhs odd to the total.

Whatever the total it is simply shocking that an Akshay Kumar mass entertainer has collected less than a film like Jism 2 in Delhi/UP and East Punjab on day one. These sort of opening numbers in key circuits means the film needs a miraculous jump over the weekend.

Khiladi 786 Movie Review by Rajeev Masand

Rating: 2

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Asin, Himesh Reshammiya, Mithun Chakraborty, Raj Babbar, Mukesh Rishi, Rahul Singh

Director: Ashish Mohan

Khiladi 786 stars Akshay Kumar, who breaks into a Himesh-voiced song at the drop of a hat. Normally that wouldn’t be a problem, except that Himesh Reshammiya himself appears in this film. Which means you have two people on screen with the same voice – Himesh Reshammiya’s voice. Creepy, positively creepy.

The nasal-voiced crooner who’s credited as Actor, Singer, Music Composer, Story Writer, and Co-Producer of this film, allows Akshay to take centrestage as a fake cop from Punjab named Bahattar Singh, who desperately wants to be married. Bahattar, along with his father and uncle, Sattar and Ikhattar (Raj Babbar and Mukesh Rishi), masquerades as a cop and nabs smugglers on the Punjab border. For this reason his family has remained disreputable for years, and a good Indian wife is hard to come by.

Enter Himesh Reshammiya as Mansukh, the incompetent son of a Gujarati match-maker, who vows to find a suitable bride for Bahattar, unaware that he’s no real cop. His search ends at the home of local don Tatya Tukaram Tendulkar (Mithun Chakraborty), who’s looking for a respectable groom for his sister Indu (Asin).

Sanket’s Review: “Khiladi 786” is dreadfully boring.

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Asin, Mithun Chakraborthy, Himesh Reshammiya.

Director: Ashish R Mohan

Length: 2.20 hours approximately

Agreed that this is the time of potboilers and mindless entertainers, but this all hits the mark only if the conviction constraint is maintained throughout the film! Forgettable and annoying, KHILADI 786 looks more like Himesh Reshammiya’s Album release where the story travels only to bring to a situation which permits the song to roll down and the actors to break into a dance.

In first half, every-time that Akshay arrives on screen, a loud background score is thrown and not just once or twice, but every single time. The jokes are so clumsy and clunked, that they cringe you. The action scenes are has déjà-vu feeling where all the goons are flying in air and are thrown into cars, and the glasses breaks! The songs spread relief, thanks to some wonderful tunes, but the first half only leaves you with sour taste.

Just as you sit and hope for a better post-intermission, the film approaches with same route and the tone of the film is pretty much straight. The basic plot of the film and some sub-plots are lifted, but the director mauls and messes up the whole story with his shoddy direction.

Khiladi 786 Movie Review By Taran Adarsh

Rating: 3.5

Now that the 1980s’ variety of masala films are being lapped up by spectators, it is heartening to see Mumbai-based film-makers working hard to create zany entertainers, also boarding the next available flight to South India to clinch the deal/s for the remake rights of Southern blockbusters. The A-list actors, on their part, are equally gung ho for unabashed entertainers, consenting to allocate ample time to movies of this variety.

Akshay Kumar, who tasted super success earlier this year with ROWDY RATHORE [besides HOUSEFULL 2 and OMG - OH MY GOD!], comes up with his second masala outing before the year draws to a close, KHILADI 786. What makes KHILADI 786 conspicuous is the fact that it marks Akshay’s return as ‘Khiladi’ after more than a decade. From the immensely likeable KHILADI in 1992 to KHILADI 420 in 2000, Akshay was the face of over half-a-dozen ‘Khiladi’ movies during that phase — some good, some plain average, some terrible movies. The brand ‘Khiladi’ got affixed to Akshay in those years.

KHILADI 786 borrows the ‘Khiladi’ brand, but has no correlation with the ‘Khiladi’ movies attempted earlier. KHILADI 786 has a skeletal plot, but is padded with ingredients that are aimed at the hoi polloi: The lead man bashes up 10/15 goons at one go like we swat mosquitoes, punches the wall in anger and the wall crumbles, even gulps down a man as if he we were consuming a soft drink from a straw [yes, you read it right!].
