A Shirtless Hunk’s Fear of Flying Low – Rajeev Masand’s Gossip Column

It was a poignant moment at a Bollywood awards ceremony in Vancouver last week when Priyanka Chopra dedicated her Best Actress award to her father and requested that he accept the trophy with her.

Oozing confidence about his performance as Mumbai gangster Manya Surve in director Sanjay Gupta’s Shootout At Wadala, John Abraham insists that the film will force the audience to see him in a new light. The actor has revealed he’s shirtless only in one scene of the film and “the focus is purely on the acting”.

Not allergic to appearing in multi-starrer films (his biggest box-office hits, Houseful 2 and Race 2, were both ensemble projects), John has reportedly signed on to feature in another star-heavy sequel—Anees Bazmee’s Welcome 2. Which is why it makes no sense that he’d turn down Farah Khan’s Happy New Year with Shah Rukh Khan and Abhishek Bachchan.

“Farah and Shah Rukh saw me in a particular part, but I couldn’t see myself in that role,” John told me last week. “I’m grateful and touched that they thought of me, but I didn’t think I suited the role at all,” he added. The film is believed to be a musical comedy about a group of friends with two left feet who participate in a championship for the worst dancers ever. Farah is apparently still in the process of casting three male parts as well as the female lead.

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola Movie Analysis – Roma Heer & Gautam Batra

matru ki bijlee ka mandola

Gautam Batra: After a debacle with 7 Khoon Maaf, Vishal Bhardwaj is back with another film Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola. Unlike other movies directed by Bhardwaj, thisone is a rom-com drama. Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola has quite good face valuewithstars  like Imran Khan, Anushka Sharma & Pankaj Kapur playing the lead roles. Movie also stars Shabana Azmi & Arya Babbar in supporting roles. Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola isdirected, co-produced, co-written by Vishal Bhardwaj and credits for music design of the film also go to him. As this is the first romantic-comedy venture by Vishal Bhardwaj sothere are quite good expectationsthat he will comeup with something excellent again. So lets have an analysis on the film.

Roma, tell us how did you find the movie?

Roma Heer: First thing first that you’ll be surprised to know is that MKBKM is not a romantic comedy as it was being promoted. It is an issue based movie. Secondly, it fails in depicting the issue also. It was a below average fair that was only saved by Pankaj Kapur’s performance.

Gautam Batra: What’s the story of movie?

Roma Heer: Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola is story of Harry Mandola alias Haria, Mandola (Pankaj Kapur), a big businessman who eyes on the land of poor farmers of village to fulfill his dreams of setting up a big business empire.

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola Boxoffice Collections Thread

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola Struggles On Day One

Friday 11th January 2013 22.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola struggled at the box office on day one as early collections for day one suggest a 6.50 crore nett first day. The film is the first major release of the year with a release of 1900 screens but it could not make a mark at the box office.

The collections are far better at multiplexes than single screens in all circuits. Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola will actually turn out to be the second biggest opening ever of Imran Khan behind Mere Brother Ki Dulhan but that is more due to wider release today and the 6 or 7 crore opening days today are not what they were a couple of years back.

Saturday will the key and good growth will required all over to come out with decent weekend.

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola Movie Review by Rajeev Masand

Rating: 4

Cast: Pankaj Kapur, Imran Khan, Anushka Sharma, Shabana Azmi, Arya Babbar, Navneet Nishan

Director: Vishal Bhardwaj

If it’s true – what director Vishal Bhardwaj would have us believe in that cheeky anti-smoking disclaimer that precedes Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola – that too much of anything, even water and lemon, is harmful, then the filmmaker evidently doesn’t practice what he preaches. This outrageous comedy after all shows little concern for our health as it delivers laugh after side-splitting laugh.

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola might well be described as Bhardwaj’s holiday movie – a mad story with crazy characters – but fortunately for us, even in a light mood, the director can be counted on to say interesting things.

In a fictional village in Haryana, the wealthiest resident, Harry Mandola (Pankaj Kapur), has conspired with a cunning minister (Shabana Azmi) to usurp the poor villagers’ farmlands so he can build an industrial plant. Harry has a drinking problem, but he’s a better man when he’s under the influence, sympathizing with the villagers’ condition, even going so far as to lead a procession against himself one intoxicated night. His Man Friday, Hukum Singh Matru (Imran Khan), has been hired with the sole purpose of controlling Mandola’s drinking habit, but that’s easier said than done.

Sanket’s Review: “Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola” suffers from its over-ambitious director, though is saved by the performers.

Cast: Pankaj Kapoor, Imran Khan, ANushka Sharma, Shabana Azmi, Arya Babbar.

Director: Vishal Bhardwaj

Length: 2.30 hours approximately

Vishal Bhardwaj is known for making “out of the box” type of cinema. He has given us some gripping tales in past like “Omkara”, “Maqbool”, “Kaminey”, but sadly it seems the director is losing his hold over his films which reflected in “7 Khoon Maaf” and now “Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola”. Bhardwaj infuses so much of smart narration that it sidelines a well written script. What queers me is that he attempted pronounced humor in his film making a caricature out of Arya Babbar! Who would have thought of slapstick gags in a film directed by Bhardwaj!

The first half of the film has some ace and the story unfolds smartly. But the film focuses too much on trivial things adding to its overlong length. The last 15 minutes before inter-mission is the best thing about the film and will surely bring the house down with enormous laughs! But sadly, this is the only memorable bit of the film, and may be the only scene where Bhardwaj strikes chord with his direction.

The film loses its momentum post-intermission where too many songs eats up the story.

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola Movie Review by Raja Sen

mkbkm

Without warning, there is an accident. Then, a flashback: to ten minutes earlier. A flashback which explains, nearly in realtime, how the accident comes to be. Why, then, did we not directly start from the flashback? Because Vishal said so.

Vishal Bhardwaj’s latest film delights in its own impish, impromptu absurdity. There is much daftness in this oddly titled Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, a cock-and-pink-buffalo story that stays surreal even at its most satirical. It’s theatrical, insightful, wickedly clever and, often, too funny to even laugh at, if you know what I mean. It is also, as may be apparent, an utterly random movie, sometimes jarringly uneven and frequently meandering. And yet it works, because it is, at every single step, unexpected and surprising.

Even the most seemingly slapdash of scenes appears magical when the work of a master is evident. This film swings with two sultans, each spurring the other on toward a sillier spectacle, a sight of grand lunacy. Bhardwaj more than handles his end — heaping on wordplay and quirk and texture — but the Quixote in the other corner is even wilder: Pankaj Kapur, who carries the film with smiles and slurs. Together, this jesting juggalbandi provides a rare treat: a legendary actor rolling up his sleeves and a director giving him miles of room in which to conjure.

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola Movie Review by Taran Adarsh

One looks forward to a Vishal Bhardwaj film for varied reasons. For this supremely talented storyteller/music composer, stories have preceded stars, which, to be brutally honest, is a rarity in Bollywood. Though he has worked with A-list names, he’s *not* made it a compulsion or regularity. Additionally, one cannot accuse him of peddling saccharine sweet romances, brain-dead comedies or fancy family dramas to his spectators. Experimenting with varied genres, pushing the envelope vis-à-vis the subject matter of the film and often focusing on small-town stories has been his forte. Also, the soundtrack remains fresh in your memory, even after his movies make an exit from cinema halls.

With MATRU KI BIJLEE KA MANDOLA, Vishal goes to the Indian hinterland yet again to narrate a brand new story. This film, like some of his past works, reflects the rustic flavor of villages/small towns. The supremely talented film-maker is often accused of making ‘dark films’, but MATRU KI BIJLEE KA MANDOLA is an exception. Vishal tackles a serious issue, but makes sure he injects dollops of humor this time. Be forewarned, the humor is not the leave-your-brains-at-home kind of stuff that we get served in most films. It’s quirky and unconventional.

MATRU KI BIJLEE KA MANDOLA is definitely not Vishal’s best work, though the master touch is evident in several sequences.
