The Other Side Of Amitabh Bachchan

Well I don’t know how many of you are aware of these facts or let me say the Other side of Amitabh Bachchan.

zanjeer

Amitabh Bachchan had given 12 consecutive flops before Zanjeer.

Sunil Dutt signed him for a mute’s role in Reshma Aur Shera because of a letter of introduction from then PM Indira Gandhi to friend Nargis.

Kalyanji-Anandji helped him in his struggling days and even introduced him to Prakash Mehra

Comedian Mehmood was also a mentor to Mr Bachchan in his days of struggle and offered him place to stay in his own home.

Kader Khan - Former Mentor and dialogue writer of many films starring AmitabhWr1a5FZk5hE

Bachchan lashes out at Amitabh Bachchan in an interview. “Kader Khan told that Amitabh Bachchan discouraged him to join politics, while he himself became M.P. He said that Amitabh told me, ‘if people will approach you for politics, then I would tell them that you are not the right person, I would discourage them to vote for you, I will ensure that you don’t win’. Kader Khan, who wrote dialogues for Amitabh’s hit films like Satte Pe Satta, Naseeb, Muqadder Ka Sikander, says that Amitabh was ruined by politics. Kader Khan further added ‘My relationship with Amitabh got ruined after he became MP.

Manmohan Desai: The Original Entertainer No. 1

Today is Manmohan Desai’s birth anniversary. So check out this Filmfare article with quotes from him.

manmohandesai

Manmohan Desai was a genius… He told the audience in the very first frame, `I’m going to make a fool of you’ – Amitabh Bachchan

I was only 24 when I met Manmohan Desai. Just eight years later, this man who was full of joie de vivre, was gone. How? The suddenness of this happy-go-lucky man’s death drove all us movie buffs up the wall. To me, Manji still seems like the least likely candidate for self-annihilation. Though his aching back was against the wall, literally, he held forth on many movies and life with an infectious zest. His comments on offbeat films and film-makers had me in splits. His films were kitsch art, though catch him admitting to anything arty about his works! His cinematic world encompassed a utopia where high melodrama resolved itself magically. To his abiding exasperation, critics insisted on searching for logic in his films. “Do they realise how much brains and money are needed to make my kind of films? I really enjoy what I’m doing… I’m on the sets all the time. I’m not the kind of film-maker who functions from the background.

Milind’s Reflections: Cinematic Thoughts on the Year gone by-2012!

It is imperative to note that the year that went by was not one of the best years for Cinema as such.Neither the Hindi film-makers,nor the southern ones, especially Tamil directors shell out something spectacularly brilliant. One also cannot dispute the fact that inspite of nothing extraordinary, there was some splash in the pan and some films did steal the hearts with their sheer honesty!

The year started with a remake of an old-cult classic called Agneepath that had given Bachchan a national award. Hrithik was nowhere near the persona of Bachchan [that inspite of being itself irritating at times was superlative in terms of the emphatic portrayal of a character betrayed by life]. Agneepath was never about raw power, nor was Scarface from which it was partially inspired. These two films were about characters and their confrontation with life amidst a debate between the duty to do good and the necessity to outdo evil with evil. The film did boast of a few superlative performances like Rishi Kapoor who was good in his role and did bring out the emotion with aplomb.Hrithik disappointed.Nothing new in it as SRK in his role as Vijay had put up a miserable performance compared to Bachchan’s legendary portrayal of the same!

Blast from the Past: Javed Akhtar’s Filmfare Interview from 2001

Today is Javed Akhtar’s birthday. So check out his Filmfare Interview from August 2001.

What’s the good verse… Javed Akhtar on record

He’s the purrfect sound byte engineer. Shooting from the lip, narrating stories with easy facility, when it comes to word play, Javed Akhtar’s the raconteur for all reasons. Right from crafting the lacerating Mere paas maa hai (Deewaar) dialogue to the gossamer soft Kuch na kaho (1942-A Love Story) to the pacifist Panchhi nadiya (Refugee), Jadoo as wife Shabana Azmi calls him, words come to him as naturally as waves lapping a shore.

He prefers the old-fashioned way of putting pen to paper rather than the new fangled word processor. Yet he’s hip enough to cotton on to the lingua franca spoken by new generation directors, 20-somethings like son Farhan and daughter Zoya. From Ramesh Sippy (Andaz) to Rohan Sippy (Kuch Na Kaho), he’s seamlessly straddled two generations of mind-sets.

Rapier sharp-retorts and amiable jibes keep the air filled chez the Azmi/Akhtars. On a cold, cold night, Javed saab steams up the fiza (his favourite word) with some hot-hot banter. Excerpts:

When Shabana and I got married, it was rather late in the day to have kids. Anyone in this country who has many children is less than a patriot

Have you turned producer with Dil Chahta Hai which your son Farhan is directing?

Salman Khan is like my big brother, says Katrina Kaif

Katrina Kaif created quite a stir in Kolkata on Saturday. Not only was she looking gorgeous in her desi avataar in a chiffon sari – a typical Yash Raj heroine, she also made everyone’s jaws drop when she claimed: “Salman is like my big brother”.

The leading cast of Yash Raj film ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ had descended in Kolkata on Saturday to inaugurate the Kolkata International Film Festival.

Shah Rukh Khan, who is the brand ambassador of West Bengal and also owns the state’s IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders, was also at the event to inaugurate the festival. Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan was also present during the ceremony.

But Katrina managed to steal the thunder despite the presence of stalwarts like Amitabh, Shah Rukh and even the chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, who is known for sensational quotes.

Now, it is not secret that Katrina managed to gain a solid foothold in Bollywood only after the beefy actor took her under his wings and promoted her heavily. Otherwise an ok looking girl with a fabulous figure and barely being able to converse in accented Hindi would have been long lost in the labyrinths of Bollywood.

It is also not a secret that the duo were involved in a close relationship with each other.
