Canned Heat… About to Pop – Rajeev Masand’s Gossip Column

Sonam Kapoor was scheduled to show up only after Ash’s departure, and Freida Pinto not until the closing ceremony.

By the time you read this, the Bollywood brigade will likely be back from Cannes where they have spent a week or so walking the red carpet, making questionable sartorial choices, and going on and on about the centenary of the birth of Indian cinema without ever having watched a Ray or a Ghatak. But let’s not play the wet blanket. It was oddly comforting to watch Vidya Balan (the pallu on her head and the enormous nath in her nose notwithstanding) share the jurors’ dais with the likes of Steven Spielberg, Ang Lee and Nicole Kidman. You couldn’t help but cheer when Amitabh Bachchan spoke in chaste Hindi to declare the festival open alongside Leonardo DiCaprio.

But it was the camaraderie, in the unlikeliest of places, that was positively heartening. At the L’Oreal suite on the rooftop of Martinez Hotel, to be specific. For years, there’s been a tacit understanding that the three Indian brand ambassadors would be kept at a safe distance from each other. The year that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan attended the opening of the festival, Sonam Kapoor was scheduled to show up only after Ash’s departure, and Freida Pinto not until the closing ceremony. The brand worked hard to ensure the three actresses didn’t run into each other on their premises.

Before Kai Po Che – Rajeev Masand’s Gossip Column

If all goes well, Aishwarya Rai should begin working on her comeback project sometime this year.

Referring to the uncertainties of the business and its ability to surprise even veteran players, William Goldman, the Oscar- winning screenwriter of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, had once famously said: “In Hollywood, no one knows anything.” This is true of Bollywood as well.

The success of Kai Po Che has reinforced the fact that even successful stars and established producers can be wrong in their assessment of a script’s potential. Director Abhishek Kapoor is being lauded for his decision to cast non-stars as his leads, but few are aware that he had, in fact, approached big actors for the film before having to settle for a relatively unknown ensemble.

According to industry sources, Imran Khan, Shahid Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor were all presented with the script. But each of them is believed to have separately said ‘no’ to Abhishek on the grounds that the story didn’t convince them. Ranbir, in particular, who has displayed a knack for picking quality projects so far, not only turned down the film, but also allegedly told Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani that he was “surprised” they were thinking of producing the movie (Abhishek was originally developing the project for Excel Entertainment).

It is hard to tell how much Farhan and Ritesh were influenced by Ranbir’s feelings when they finally decided to pass on Kai Po Che.

Salman Khan turns 47: How the loveable ‘Prem’ became ‘Dabangg’ Chulbul Pandey

New Delhi: Some call him ‘enfant terrible’, ‘box-office juggernaut’ and ‘Rajinikanth of Bollywood’, while others deploy epithets like ‘munificent’, ‘unpretentious’ and ‘destiny’s child’ to describe him. Salman Khan is one of the most successful actors, and compelling characters, Bollywood has ever seen. The fact that he is ruling the roost from the last 24 years is a trenchant testament of his longevity, colossal stardom and unswerving popularity.

In the current scenario, he’s hailed as a man with the Midas touch. All of his last five movies – Dabangg, Ready, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger and Dabanng 2 – have been monumental blockbusters raking in moolah in spades. He has delivered the biggest hits of last three years – Dabangg (145 crore, 2010), Bodyguard (150 crore, 2011) and Ek Tha Tiger (199.3 crore, 2012) – and this unprecedented success has propelled him in a league of his own where is way ahead of his contemporaries. He’s competing with himself at the box-office, defying all the tenets of cinema and shaterring his own records.

More than the phenomenal success of his movies, it’s his maddening fame among all quarters of the audience which is astonishing. His name evokes untramelled euphoria and mass hysteria. People go berserk to catch a glimpse of his and flock to theatres just to watch their ‘Bhai’ pulling off stunning action sequences, pummeling baddies with uninhibited belligerence, mouthing zany one-liners with charismatic ease, and romancing the heroine with sprightly nonchalance.

Blast from the Past: Shankar’s Interview before release of Nayak

Check out this Filmfare August 2001 Interview of Shankar where he talks about offering Nayak to Aamir and Shah Rukh, working with Anil Kapoor and Kamal Haasan, his “obsession” Aishwarya Rai, Ram Gopal Varma’s obsession with heroines and comparisons with David Dhawan.

He’s India’s highest paid director. His fee is whispered to be a whopping Rs 5-crore plus. But look at the man in the khaki chinos with a conservative checked shirt… sitting in the plushest suite at a five-star hotel in Mumbai and you’ll never guess that his stock on the Indian film market is worth a lot more than that of apna Subhash Ghai, avid Dhawan or Aditya Chopra. Fact is he’s the only Indian director so far who has actually been offered a movie by a bigwig Hollywood Studio.

Shankar who makes his debut in Hindi films this August is the man who has directed five Tamil mega hits–Gentleman, Kadalan, Jeans (the original grossed crores) Indian and Mudalvan.

Nayak, his first offering in Hindi, is the remake of Mudalvan. The film deals with the hard-hitting subject of the corruption prevalent in our system… and it has a cast headed by the current garma-garam jodi Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee.
