Let’s Not Ask Her Screen Age – Rajeev Masand’s Gossip Column

Deepika Padukone told me she got quite an earful from Ayan on the first day of shoot when she “jokingly” made a comment that he didn’t appreciate.

Aditya Chopra has given Katrina Kaif three of her biggest films —Ek Tha Tiger (opposite Salman Khan, a bonafide blockbuster), Jab Tak Hai Jaan (opposite Shah Rukh Khan, another blockbuster), and the forthcoming Aamir Khan-vehicle Dhoom 3 (a surefire firecracker)—yet the actress turned down Gunday (which Aditya was reportedly keen that she star in) so she could work with Hrithik Roshan in Siddharth Anand’s Knight & Day remake, Bang Bang, instead.

Priyanka Chopra slipped into Gunday instead, earning brownie points with the producer. And Bang Bang, whose shooting dates originally clashed with Gunday, has been endlessly delayed, with filming only likely to start in June now.

Industry pundits are saying Katrina is no longer in Aditya’s ‘good books’, and she might have shot herself in the foot by turning down Gunday, where she would have been cast opposite younger heroes Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor. “Working so frequently with the Khans and with Hrithik, her ‘screen age’ has become considerably more than her real age. Unlike Deepika and Anushka, Katrina doesn’t have films opposite younger actors like Ranbir, Imran and Shahid. It wouldn’t have hurt to do a film that would bring down her screen age,” explains a respected film producer.

I Like the VERSATILITY of SRK and Hrithik

SRK with Hrithik Roshan

Shah Rukh Khan has been in the industry for more than 20 years now and he has been giving HITs throughout his career. Most of his Hits is in Romantic genre and So media has tagged him the ‘King of Romance’. This has made many people believe that he is just keep on doing romantic movies which is far from truth. I am covering basically two points i.e. Versatility in choosing the type of movies and Versatility in acting. I am assuming that we know the meaning of versatility so that when I mention about the movies like Ra.One, Ashoka and Paheli you will not have any chance to say that they were Flops.

Versatility in choosing movies
I feel, among the present lot, SRK is the most versatile actor when it comes to choosing movies in different genres. He has done the role of a romantic hero who lures his heroines by his charm to a wicked man who can do anything for revenge of his father’s death. A mentally challenged man to a Superhero. Just look at his filmography and you can see the Diversity. Short film with Arundhati, KHKN, DDLJ, Baazigar, Dil se, PBDHH, Pardes, Hey Raam, Ashoka, Swades, Koyla, Baadshah, MNIK, OSO, CDI, Don, Ra.one.

Milind’s Reflections: Cinematic Thoughts on the Year gone by-2012!

It is imperative to note that the year that went by was not one of the best years for Cinema as such.Neither the Hindi film-makers,nor the southern ones, especially Tamil directors shell out something spectacularly brilliant. One also cannot dispute the fact that inspite of nothing extraordinary, there was some splash in the pan and some films did steal the hearts with their sheer honesty!

The year started with a remake of an old-cult classic called Agneepath that had given Bachchan a national award. Hrithik was nowhere near the persona of Bachchan [that inspite of being itself irritating at times was superlative in terms of the emphatic portrayal of a character betrayed by life]. Agneepath was never about raw power, nor was Scarface from which it was partially inspired. These two films were about characters and their confrontation with life amidst a debate between the duty to do good and the necessity to outdo evil with evil. The film did boast of a few superlative performances like Rishi Kapoor who was good in his role and did bring out the emotion with aplomb.Hrithik disappointed.Nothing new in it as SRK in his role as Vijay had put up a miserable performance compared to Bachchan’s legendary portrayal of the same!

My take on Bollywood in 2012

I made a similar post last year  LINK

1) Hrithik in Agneepath- Agneepath was a tough one to be remade and Karan Malhotra did good by having a fresh take towards it. The best thing about this movie was Hrithik as Vijay Deenanath Chauhan. Hrithik did really well by portraying a famous character in his own way and not trying to repeat anything Big B had done in the original. He excelled in the fight sequences, as well as in the emotional family scenes. The best thing about Hrithik’s performance was that since it was distinct and dedicated, it took all scope of comparison out of the frame. A very good performance.

2) Irrfan in Paan Singh Tomar-I found Paan Singh Tomar a really average film. I thought the direction was average and so was the cinematography and background score. However despite some noteworthy flaws, Paan Singh Tomar became a legendary film, due to a tour de force performance by Irrfan. He was the Paan Singh Tomar right from the first till the last frame. It was one of those once in career kind of performances. Fortunately, with an actor like Irrfan, we may be able to see many more of these.
