Department Is A Disaster

Department is a disaster at the box office as it collected around 7.25-7.50 crore nett over the weekend. The film grossed 2.75 crore nett on Friday, 2 crore nett on Saturday and Sunday was around 2.50-2.75 crore nett.

The collections at multiplexes were extremely low while single screens at mass centres recorded better collections.

Ishaqzaade in its second week was better at multiplexes all over while children’s animation film Chhota Bheem and The Curse Of Damyaan was ahead at multiplexes where both films had screenings. Even Vicky Donor in its fifth week was recording better numbers at many multiplexes.

Department was released on 44 theatres in Delhi city and collected just 55 lakhs approx. Thats just over 1 lakh per theatre when Delhi city has the most high grossing theatres in the country.

Robin Gibb, member of the Bee Gees, dies after battle with cancer

Robin Gibb, one of three brothers who made up the disco group the Bee Gees behind “Saturday Night Fever” and other now-iconic sounds from the 1970s, died on Sunday, according to a statement on his website.

He was 62.

Gibb “passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery,” said the statement, which was attributed to his family. He died in England at 10:47 a.m. (5:47 a.m. ET), according to a post on his official Twitter feed.

News of his death set off a torrent of reaction in social media. Musician Bryan Adams, for instance, lamented “another great singer dying too young” on Twitter, while fellow British band Duran Duran and current pop sensation Bruno Mars were among many who posted their condolences.

“The Bee Gees were/are the gold standard when it comes to pop/r&b melody, harmony and vocal arrangement. Massive loss,” wrote prolific pop songwriter Claude Kelly on his Twitter feed.
Reflecting on the career of Robin Gibb

Diagnosed with colon and liver cancer, Gibb had been in a coma as he battled pneumonia earlier this spring, representative Doug Wright said.

Doctors believe that Gibb had a secondary tumor, Wright said April 14, confirming a news account in the UK newspaper The Sun.

Emraan, the No-No Guy

Word within studio walls at Yash Raj Films is that boss-man Aditya Chopra is convinced his Ishaqzaade heroine Parineeti Chopra could be the Next Big Thing. Kareena Kapoor, who had more or less committed to starring opposite Emraan Hashmi in a Dharma-Balaji co-production, is believed to have backed out of the film now. Although the actress is resorting to the age-old ‘no dates’ excuse, industry insiders say she has allegedly expressed reservations about working with the Murder star.

The film, described as an ‘unusual romantic comedy’, is to be directed by first-timer Akshay Roy. Both Karan Johar and Ekta Kapoor, who are jointly producing this film, were excited by the unconventional casting coup they’d pulled off. Now there is some talk that the film may be shelved altogether.

Emraan Hashmi, who has evolved into a bankable leading man even outside his comfort zone (that is, adult thrillers produced mostly by the Bhatt banner), has had some trouble getting A-list actresses to work opposite him. All that looked like it was about to change after Vidya Balan signed No One Killed Jessica director Rajkumar Gupta’s next film Ghanchakkar opposite Emraan, and news broke around the same time that Kareena would be his co-star in the Dharma-Balaji collaboration.

Even without the Kareenas, Katrinas and Deepikas to star opposite him, Emraan has no shortage of A-list projects. After Dibakar Banerjee’s political thriller Shanghai opens in June, he’ll star in the Vishal Bhardwaj production Dayen, and in Kurbaan director Rensil D’Silva’s next for Dharma Productions.

The collections of Department crashed on Saturday as the film was 25% lower than Friday. It is rare to see such a big fall on the second day. The film collected around 2.75 crore nett on Friday and 2 crore nett on Saturday. the Sunday collections are unlikely to be better than Friday and may not even be much higher than Saturday. The early Saturday figures from some circuits are as follows. Friday numbers in brackets.

Ishaqzaade Holds Strong On 8th Day

Ishaqzaade held up very well on its 8th day collecting around 1.75-2 crore nett as per early estimates. The collections in some circuits were as good as the previous day while the single screen dominated circuits had slight drops as it lost screens due to Department.

The 8th day collections of Ishaqzaade are a bit lower than the first day of Department but its likely that over the weekend it will emerge top of the box office charts again as it shows more growth than Department.

The weekend should come out in the 7.50 crore nett which would make it a near certainty to cross the 40 crore nett mark for lifetime business.

Department Movie Review by Anupama Chopra

Direction: Ram Gopal Varma
Actors: Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Rana Daggubati
Rating: **

In an interview, Ram Gopal Varma said that at a young age he developed “a low-angle fascination for
larger-than-life people.” So his films repeatedly return to the theme of power – who wields it, how they get it and how they inevitably lose it.

Department, about a special task force of encounter specialists, begins with this adage: Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely. After that, Varma retreads old ground: crooked cops, underworld dons, political leaders who function like underworld dons.

Amitabh Bachchan plays a crasser version of his character in Sarkar.

Varma has mined this material before, from Satya to Ab Tak Chhappan, which he produced, so he decided to embellish this film with a new technique that he calls “rogue filmmaking.” Which means he chose student camera operators and high-end digital cameras over a cinematographer and film camera. Which further means that strange camera angles, a regular feature of Varma’s films, are now the main event.

I can’t remember a still frame in the two-hour-plus running time of this film. Instead, we see a character from the inside of a teacup or an entire scene from the point of view of a striker as it whizzes across a carom board.

Department First Day Business

Department had a very poor day as it collected around 2.25 crore nett as per early estimates. The film started poorly and did not show any improvement in the evening shows.

Single screens at some stations have fared better but still collections are low. Multiplexes all over have seen a very low turnout and in some Delhi/NCR multiplexes, the collections of Vicky donor in its fifth Friday were better than the first Friday of Department.

There is not much hope for the film from this low level and will not be a surprise if the film is not able to show a jump on Saturday despite such low collections.

Rajya Sabha clears copyright bill, B-Town hails Javed Akhtar

With the Rajya Sabha passing an amendment to improve the rights of composers and writers, B-Town biggies Sonu Niigaam, Kailash Kher, Shabana Azmi and Rohit Roy have hailed veteran writer Javed Akhtar for his efforts in getting the measure through.

Akhtar has been pushing for an amendment in the copyright laws to give music directors and lyricists a share of the profits earned on their work. The amendment to the copyright act was passed by the Rajya Sabha Thursday and will now go to the Lok Sabha.

Akhtar’s wife Shabana was ecstatic.

“Hurrah copyright amendment bill passed in Rajya Sabha. Javed’s historic moment to give lyricists, composers 12 percent of their rightful share,” she tweeted.

Sonu wrote: “Copyright act passed by the Rajya Sabha… For not just the composers and lyrics writer but singers too. Congratulations. Kudos @Javedakhtarjadu.”

Akhtar and actress Jaya Bachchan spoke in support of amendments to the bill at the Rajya Sabha.

“Javed Akhtar is a real hero for fighting for all creative people. We are blessed to see the change and people behind it. Finally copyright is and will be defined in real now in our country, congratulations to all intellectual property owners, finally you are protected,” tweeted Kher.

Department Movie Review by Rajeev Masand

1.5

Cast: Rana Dagubatti, Sanjay Dutt, Amitabh Bachchan, Vijay Raaz, Abhimanyu Singh, Anjana Sukhani, Madhu Shalini

Director: Ramgopal Varma

If there’s a point to Ramgopal Varma’s Department, I’m afraid I missed it. There’s a good chance I might have been distracted by his relentlessly dizzy camera… Carrying on his fascination with the mafia, Varma looks at the dynamics and the inner workings of a special unit within the Mumbai police force created in the wake of increasing crimes by two factions of the underworld.

Sanjay Dutt plays Inspector Mahadev Bhosle, head of this team of sharpshooters that must work under the radar to weed out mafia elements from the city. Rana Dagubatti is Shiv Narayan, an upright cop and Bhosle’s right-hand man, who wins the favor of eccentric minister Sarjerao Gaekwad (Amitabh Bachchan) when he takes down a shooter who fires at the politico during a rally.

Varma’s gallery of rogues includes Vijay Raaz as shrieking don Savatiya, Abhimanyu Singh as DK, a hot-headed henchman in his team, and my personal favorite, a female gangster and DK’s squeeze (Madhu Shalini) who’s constantly licking her lips suggestively or sucking on kulfis when she isn’t advising DK to rebel against his boss.

Predictably, cops mix up with gangsters, cops betray cops, and politicians are discovered to be in cahoots with the underworld.
