Which star in what genre? Public image of our top stars in various genres

Stars & Genres: Finding The Fit

Posted on April 29, 2012
Horses for courses. Yes, it applies to film stars as well. There are genres that suit certain stars well, and don’t suit certain other stars at all. We often say this during our film discussions, e.g. “He is good in romantic roles only”, “He can’t do comedy”, “He is the most versatile actor” and so on.

But what does the consumer think?

We collected data to this effect. It was actually meant to be a fun exercise, for internal consumption only. But when we started sharing the results with the film fraternity, we got excellent response. It seemed that the findings were, as someone said, “directly useful”. Hence, I thought they should be put up here for public consumption.

Essentially, we asked theatre-goers a question for 16 male stars. For each star, they had to pick one out of the following genres that suited him the most – comedy, action, romance, family, none.

Why only these four genres? Because these are the ‘organic’ genres, where star imagery has a strong role to play. Other genres like thriller, horror, sci-fi etc. are not image-driven in principle. Also, we hardly make enough films outside these four genres for consumers to have any real opinions around them.

The film is a Super Hit and will cross the business of films like Don 2 and Golmaal 3 at a worse case scenario. The film may even go towards 115 crore nett depending on what happens in week three.

Shahrukh Khan next Rumoured to be Karna from Mahabharata.

In case you are wondering why Shahrukh Khan has been looking pale and exhausted, even after Ra.One and Don2 have come and gone, here’s why. Mumbai Mirror has learnt that King Khan is back to doing what he does best – burning the midnight oil with his SFX team at Red Chillies, to put together a very special presentation.

SRK, we were told, had a meeting with his trusted lieutenants in Red Chillies, at his residence, and gave them a deadline. The presentation, say sources from the team, is about his next pet project, which is based on one of the most interesting and complex characters in the Mahabharat, Karna.

In some of his recent interviews to foreign publications, SRK has also spoken extensively about his epic plans for the epic project, which will feature visual effects along the lines of Avatar. Now, with a month left for Berlin Film Festival, where SRK intends to pitch for his Rs 200-crore megafilm, the Red Chillies team is working round the clock to prepare the presentation.

Each member, we believe, has been asked to give their own inputs for the interpretation of Karna’s character, which according to sources, may be essayed by Khan himself.

Breaking news – SRK to have 2 releases in 2012 – YRF film n Chennai Express

“There is news pouring in from every quarter that SRK is signing new films. But no one seems to know that SRK will have not one but two releases in 2012.

Yes, Except Yash Chopra’s next, SRK will be having one more release some time this year. This film is “Chennai Express’ and will be directed by Rohit Shetty who had delivered hits consecutively in last some time i.e. “Golmaal 3”, “Singham” etc.

This development happened few days back when SRK was told that Rohit can start shooting in April and can finish it by July end. SRK will also be free post March – April when Yash Chopra is wrapping up his film.

This will make last few months of the year 2012 even more exciting as Akshay has few up his sleeves and Salman has “Dabangg 2”. It has been said that SRK is not going to make this announcement official as he wants to make sure that both the films finish on time but without any compromises.

Will this year prove merrier for SRK with these two releases?”

Don 2 Has Solid Second Monday – BOI

Don 2 had a solid second Monday as it collected around the 3 crore nett range as per early estimates. The collections are holding at multiplexes across the country. It is likely that the collections for the Hindi version will be around the 100 crore nett mark when the second week is over.

In West Bengal, Mysore and Tamil Nadu/Kerala it has turned out to be the biggest hit of 2011. In these three circuits it will emerge the biggest grosser ever after Three Idiots.

Overall the Hindi version of the film should cross the 115 crore nett of Ra.One (Hindi) while the 121 crore nett of Ready is likely to prove a stiff task.

DON 2 2nd weekend update

DON 2 is doing pretty well in the second weekend.

Though the actual numbers are not available from BOI, Taran has given Friday and Saturday numbers are 4.45 and 6.2 crores respectively.

Saturday business picked up hugely in the afternoon shows but the evening and night shows were not up to the mark which is most probably because of the fact that people were busy in new year parties and celebrations.. Sunday has seen a huge pickup particularly in the multiplexes. Sunday business is expected to be around 8.5-9.5 Cr as per my estimates , which will give a 2nd weekend of 19-20 crores. This is 1-2 cr less than my expectations of 20-22 Cr but very good nevertheless. Don 2 should have 28-30Cr 2nd week and will touch the 100 Cr mark by the end of 2nd week.

Lifetime business looks like 110 Cr with a chance of touching 115 Cr (if Players is not liked by the audience).

I will update the post once the actual numbers are out.

DON 2 : the complete BO analysis

Hi All,

This is my first post on this forum. Let me introduce myself – I am a SRK fan but not a   fanatic. I have been always interested in BO as I am fascinated about numbers.

Now, it is very clear that DON 2 is a CLEAN HIT for SRK, a much needed one. It has been 3 years since SRK had given a big hit (particularly in India) – his last one was RNBDJ.

Now, the question is – how big a HIT is DON 2? Let us see.

There are 2 ways of looking at BO – one is the profit to the distributor considering all sources of revenues and the other one is based on the theatrical business.

I prefer the second approach as it gives the clear picture of how well the movie has been received by the audience.

DON 2 domestic business

DON2 had a weekend of 45.5 crores and added another 26 crores in the weekdays taking its total to almost 72 crores. The movie is doing phenomenal business in multiplexes of big cities whereas Single screens and mass centres are under-performing hugely. Considering that, the weekdays’ business is indeed very good as the weekdays’ business is mainly driven by SS.
