Chennai Express Boxoffice Collections Thread

Chennai Express Has Huge Paid Previews

Friday 7th August 2013 11.00 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Chennai Express had a huge collection in paid previews as it collected around 6 crore nett. It is the highest paid previews ever by a distance but so were the screenings. The film has recorded phenomenal collections in Mumbai and South with Mumbai collection being amongst the top five if we compare with the full first days of releases in 2013.

The paid previews in South are even better as the collections are better than the full first days of all films released in 2013 apart from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Race 2.

North India was lower comparatively while the Central and Eastern markets have less multiplexes so paid previews don’t get as many screenings as the bigger circuits.

Chennai Express had an excellent opening on Friday morning on huge number of screenings. The film opened to house full or near house full response. The opening was expected due to the hype and day one being a national holiday. The only question is will it be the highest opening day ever. The film scored a very big number in paid previews which will mean some of the Friday audience saw the film in paid previews which will make the day one record hard to get. But on the other hand the potential to collect for the film is more than any other film due to screenings and high ticket rates. Mumbai circuit should see a new first day record while the other major contributor North India will see lower collections than Ek Tha Tiger.

The first biggie of the season, CHENNAI EXPRESS, fetched an unprecedented, mind-blowing start in India and key international markets, where it opened on Thursday evening.

In Australia and New Zealand too, CHENNAI EXPRESS is off to a fabulous start. ?The figures are: Australia A$ 38,315 … New Zealand NZ$ 8,058.

The trends in USA-Canada are also similar, although the figures are yet to pour in.

Chennai Express Has Huge Start In Overseas
    Friday 9th August 2013 12.00 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Chennai Express has started strong in Overseas. The film had a full day in the Gulf and will smashed all records there by collecting around $550,000.
The paid preview collections in UK were £143,000 which is more than what most films collect on the first day in UK.
The Australia paid previews were $35,000 while Singapore collected $110,000.
The presence of Shahrukh Khan has meant the film has managed to release in more countries than the usual Hindi film despite it being a masala film set in rural India.

  10. Anjanpur685Miles 11 years ago

East Punjab Specialists should consider Nagpur or Solapur for comparison for this movie for SS than Kanpur etc – they had considered these cities earlier for some other movies comparisons.

Anyways Maharashtra will always be more receptive to this movie than north due to number of factors.

Agreed rajesh .I was saying it to someone yesterday .one month ago the highest predictions were in the region of 24-25 cr .I’m more than impressed with 30 cr first day figure of CE .

      • mate 11 years ago

It’s also noteworthy CE earned this amount after Paid Previews. Without them, It would earn 38-40 cr region. Anyway waiting for BOI figures, I think they will have approx. 37.25 cr nett, 31 cr Friday and 6.25 cr Paid Previews. It’s yet to be seen whether first day record of ETT is broken or not, according to BOI.

Chennai Express Day 1 (Friday) Box Office Collections: SRK Smashes Salman’s ETT Record
    August 10th, 2013 by Koimoi.com Team

Chennai Express opened on its 1st Friday spectacularly at the Domestic Box Office. The film on its opening day alone has earned whooping 33.10 crores, smashing all previous highest opening day record of any film. With that the film’s total income already rests at 39.85 crores, adding the film’s collections from its preview shows.
SRK has seen a release after last year’s Yash Chopra directorial Jab Tak Hai Jaan. And being a star of his magnitude, the response is naturally huge and overwhelming.
Chennai Express till yesterday evening had earned over 30 crores and adding the earnings from night shows the film made a magnanimous total beating Salman’s record of highest opening day collections from last Eid when Ek Tha Tiger made 32.92 crores on its Day 1.
Since there is an unsaid competition between the stars, box office numbers have marginally favoured SRK over Salman this time.
    https://www.koimoi.com/box-office/chennai-express-day-1-friday-box-office-collections-srk-smashes-salmans-ett-record/

  19. rajesh 11 years ago

With such huge collection on Yestarday, the movie may cross 100crs on Monday itself which means just 4 days plus paid previews. For the first time since Dabangg, SRK seems to be challanging Salman.
Though, with the competion from OUTIMD from next week onwards, I dont see it reaching ETT’s final total.
This shows, how stupid Balaji’s decision was. They have given one week free walkover to CE with 4000 screens while they have to compete with CE’s second week and may not get more than 2500 – 2600 screens. CE will be at 125+ crs after first week, while it will be difficult for OUTIMD to even touch 100. Had both films released together, both would have 3 free weeks and the movie with better content might win the end.

no boi kal se bnd he unho ne abhi tak koi update nhi di ,. pr ek baat he salman ki movie record bade distance se todti he ,.jaise ab krish 3 tode gi ,.
CE agr ett ka record tod bhi degi tb bhi 25lakh se jyada ferk nhi hoga ,. 1 saal ki gap aur jyada rate ke baad bhi ,. kyu ki ETT ki collection thi hi bhut jyada

    • mate 11 years ago

Yeh bhi to bade distance se hi toda hai, the difference of 7 cr. If ETT would have as much paid previews as of CE, then It couldn’t be able to collect more than 27 cr.

    • cr7 11 years ago

ETT was salman’s peak. His last movie before ETT was also a record breaker for opening day collection .OTOH ce released in the so called “worst phase” of srk . So srk at his worst is equal to salman at his peak. Be a sport and accept that CE has done really well 😀

    • mate 11 years ago

You are right.. ETT had no promotions, no hiked in ticket prizes,it wasn’t the biggest release of that time.Everyone watched it for free. Right?? 😛
Aur pehli baat k mujy koi bahana banane ki kaya juroorat hai, mera konsa yahan par court trial ho raha hai. Par Ap khud hi batao, jin logo ne paid previews main picture dekhi woh next morning show dekhne jayege kaya. Nahi na.. And If the people who watched the movie at Paid Previews wouldn’t have watched it then don’t those people watch it in morning shows. So logically Paid Previews are the part of 1st day collection.
And by the way, ETT was released on 3350 screens while CE on 3550, so merely a difference of 200 screens.

  27. DABANGG_NIINJA 11 years ago

wah re wah cr7 worst phase hi bna diya ,. ra1 22.75C record us same bodyguard ko 2.25C se piche choda tha ,. don2 non holiday record 14.75C dabangg ka record 25lakh se toda tha ,.
tum srk fan bhane bhut bnate ho 😀 agle saal eid aane do ,.kick tum logo ko btaye gi ki record kaise todte he 😀

ETT ke rate badaye gye the pr ett ne record bhi 8-9cr se toda tha wo bhi 7 month ke baad

    • mate 11 years ago

Who said 29 cr, Komal nahta. Why should we belive him and not Taran, as Taran is a trade analyst of much higher level. And why you quote Komal’s figure and not Taran, because it suits your sensibilities. I knew that already from Komal’s review, and now he tried to implement his dislike on box office. By the way, I’m always be a follower of BOI, and If they said 29 cr then I will accept it. 29 cr figure is still great one, I remember many Salman and Akki sir fans called it Himmatwala 2.

Chennai Express Has Excellent First Day
    Saturday 10th August 2013 11.00 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Chennai Express collected a huge 29.25 crore nett on day one and took its collection to 35.25 crore nett including the paid previews. The film set new records in the South India markets and Bihar.
It is the second highest collection of all time behind the Ek Tha Tiger figure of 30.50 crore nett approx. The collections are out of this world in the South India markets while rest of India has seen excellent figures.
North India which could have been lower has scored well. East Punjab is comparatively lower if we compare with Ek tha Tiger but Delhi/UP is almost the same though it is due to fact that Ek Tha Tiger was released Pre-Eid and UP does not collect as well in that period. Mumbai and Central India territories have fantastic figures.

Paid Previews Cost Chennai Express Opening Day Record
    Saturday 10th August 2013 14.30 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

The paid previews on Thursday have probably cost Chennai Express the opening day record but cost is actually not the right word as a record is just a number which gets beaten in time while the makers are better off as they collected a very good figure in paid previews.

Though for the record it is pretty certain that a new record would have come in had there been no paid previews as the miss was by just around 1.25 crore nett and there is sure to have been a large chunk of the Friday audience which saw the film on Thursday.

But as has has been said above the collections stand at 35 crore nett plus after day one with paid previews while if there were no paid previews it could have been around 32 crore nett.

“But as has has been said above the collections stand at 35 crore nett plus after day one with paid previews while if there were no paid previews it could have been around 32 crore nett.”
—- Its like saying, if there was no ramadhan then the collection of ETT would have been more than 40Cr

      • mate 11 years ago

        ???
Did ETT was released in Ramadhan, I think it was released on 15 Aug, that was eid day+independence day.

        • FS 11 years ago

It was last 10 days of holy month of Ramadhan dude. Yes it released on 15th of August (Independence day & Wednesday) but Eid was on 20th of August in India. First five days of collection all netted during Ramadhan. Eid collection was on 6th day and around 19-21 Cr as per producers and 14-15Cr as per Box office india I guess.

Anyhow point is since CE was unable to break the record by a huge margin the chances of it surpassing 150Cr is very dull. Look at YJHD, it broken all the previous records by distance on non holiday and hence it managed to put up huge final net collection.

I also doubt whether it will cross 100CR in 3-4 days as predicted by trade pundits. Max it can cross on Independence day or after 6-7 days. Collection will start falling post Sunday.

          • mate 11 years ago

Ok bro. By the way, is 1.20 cr a huge margin. So we can say, according to producer’s total, CE breaks the record by a big margin. #justasking# 😛

          • FS 11 years ago

1.2Cr of what? I said since CE was unable to break the record by huge margin (it didn’t break any record first of all as per BOI & even if they change the numbers and put CE at no1, its not by huge margin) the way YJHD did by huge margin. Understand what’s written before asking stupid questions.

  45. mate 11 years ago

Yes, 1 day or 2 day records don’t matter, it’s the final collection that matters. Though Paid Previews deprived CE for making 1st day record, but it added 2-3 cr in it’s collection. I totally agree with the above article.

jealousy level has reached a new peak.. i heard some of the anti srk ppl are crying seeing bo collections climbing to new heights..

do watever you want guys, still you cannot stop stop CE at any station and it will zoom up in front of you at the maximum speed possible..

      @syedimran
Yes these are the same people who predicted 18-20 cr 1st day, they tried their every bit to spread negativity all around. And when they realised, 1st day record was broken (as per many sources esp. Taran), they totally disappeared from these blogs TQ, NG, SS. And now when they saw the record is just short of 1-2 cr to be broken (as per some sources esp BOI, the source they earlier bashed like a hell), They again come to attack with a new stretegy and logic. What can I say about them, shameless is a very small word for them.

  50. Baba 11 years ago

i dont buy the paid preview excuse. no one asked srk to have paid previews. its his fault.what the records will say is ETT is still #1 in opening day.even if it did, it wudnt be that impressive as ett was an year ago.it has to beaten by a good margin.last year ap beat bg day 1 in 6 months but just about by a small margin.so salman can relax. he has proved his stardom twice.

    • mate 11 years ago

Babaji, It means that If CE breaks the previous record of 1st weekend by a good margin, then it will prove the stardom of SRK.
BTW If you find it a stupid question, then simply ignore it. :

      • Baba 11 years ago

in some ways, it will. but my personal view is first day is most important.after that its the film.i dont give as much importance to first weekend, first week, second friday, third saturday from penultimate friday and so on. i leave those analysis for the likes of ank16 and sanket porwal 😉

i look at first day and the total gross. these two are important for bO debates in my opinion.and ofc EVA if one has the time to calculate it. most important financial parameter.

        • mate 11 years ago

I also think now-adays 1st day is the parameter to judge the stardom, and lifetime enhances the impact of that stardom. Thanks Sir for clarifying.

New Delhi: It seems Rohit Shetty is going to hit the jackpot again with his latest venture ‘Chennai Express’. The Shah Rukh-Deepika starrer has openes to packed houses on Friday, August 9. Prior to it, the film broke all previous paid previews records on Thursday.

The film has collected Rs 6.75 crore, which is the biggest paid preview collection by any Bollywood film till date.

In UK too, the film received an unprecedented response. Even though the film had only night show previews on Thursday, it collected £142,220, beating the record of Bollywood films ‘My Name Is Khan’, ‘Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna’, ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘Ek Tha Tiger’.

\’Chennai Express\’ earns Rs 33.12 cr on its first day

Directed by Rohit Shetty, ‘Chennai Express’ has earned Rs 39.87 crore in total till Friday evening.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted about the film’s business on Friday, “Let’s begin the day with a SMASHING news. #ChennaiExpress smashes all previous records, collects Rs 33.12 cr on Friday. Creates HISTORY.”

He further writes, “#ChennaiExpress Thu previews 6.75 cr, Fri 33.12 cr. Total: 39.87 cr nett. India biz only. All previous records shattered. Creates History!”

‘Ek Tha Tiger’ had earned Rs 32.93 crore on its first day.

“What a start it has been for Chennai Express, first it collected record numbers in paid previews followed by biggest opening day ever. We have received an overwhelming response from all quarters and the film is being loved by everyone. Though CE is playing in highest number of screens for any film, we still ran out of capacity in most locations due to this huge demand at the box office and the film is on its way to create new benchmarks,” says Gaurav Verma, Director – India theatrical distribution, Studios, Disney UTV.

“The film has smashed all opening day records at PVR by a significant margin. Now CE holds the record of biggest opening day at PVR- if you add previews, this number becomes even bigger. We were always confident of film doing well thus backed it with maximum show caning and right ticket pricing,” – Prakhar Joshi, Head, Programming, PVR Cinemas.

‘Chennai Express’ beats ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ on day one, earns Rs. 33 crore
    TNN | Aug 10, 2013, 11.55 AM IST

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is a happy man. His ‘Chennai Express’ has collected a decent average of Rs. 33.12 crore on the first day its opening. This means that SRK-Deepika starrer ‘Chennai Express’ has moved ahead of Salman Khan’s ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ that earned Rs. 31.25 crore on day.

Figures collected from trade analyst Taran Adarsh and social media sites reveal that Rohit Shetty’s directorial venture did wonders in box-office by making a record collection of Rs. 6.75 crore from paid previews across India. What is interesting to note is that this romantic-comedy flick has also beaten paid-preview collections of 3 Idiots at Rs. 2.7 crore.

Chennai Express has opened in approximately 3500 screens across the country on August 9. It benefited from the Eid holiday as people went to watch the movie in large number.

SRK is all smiles with this great response and thanked all his fans and well wishers in a press conference that he held at the compound of his Bandra bungalow Mannat.

@baba Sir, u know Salman fans are in huge number,we all know that, same as srk is fairly no. 1 in overseas…
now even if srk breaks record or nt, we all know that Salman has more fans in India, nd they will his any ridiculous movie… That doesn’t mean he is better actor, the problem is that srk is better actor.. But wen everybody criticise him,he make ce, so to compare star power u should add overseas too..
mow mimp point, wen srk was nt making huge box office collection, u said he is gone, or he should act in serious movie like aamir, but then u also criticize him of nt making huge box office collection, now u are again comparing with Salman, y u nt compare aamir with Salman or hritik with Salman… We all know srk is better actor nd has more star power if we add overseas… ND Salman has more star power in India but acting is no great..
sp my main point is that, y srk hates nd specially u, find one another reason to criticize him… Amitabh is greatest star of Bollywood, but he never got popularity like Rajesh Khanna, so who should be called greater, or sanjeev Kumar never was too famous so according to u sanjeev Kumar should act like Rajesh Khanna… What u want, be clear on one thing.. Its because of constant bo collection he has to come up with ce, otherwise he could make a very good movie.. Plz think, nd criticize on good reason, dnt criticize because u hate him or for just heck of it… Plz reply… I know u will answer diplomatically or will not reply.. But that just will confirm my view on ur hateness

    • Baba 11 years ago

when an srk asks rohit shetty to write a film for him, its not for making a masterpiece.its for BO. so the argument will be on BO mainly and there will be comparisons on BO whether you like it or not. but i also possess a trait of not mixing BO with movie on its own, unlike many here. you should see what i wrote about CE and srk in movie thread.

Chennai Express: Saturday (Day 2) Box Office Collections
    August 11th, 2013 by Koimoi.com Team

Shah Rukh Khan-Deepika Padukone’s Chennai Express, which is doing massive business in Overseas and India Box Office, collected 28 crores on its 1st Saturday i.e. Day 2. This Rohit Shetty directorial now stands at a domestic total of about 67.85 crores at the Domestic Box Office. The movie performed excellent in Mumbai, Delhi and UP circuits.
The numbers are undoubtedly great, however, it was expected to pick up on Day 2 considering a usual upward trend at the Box Office for any film. But, since its release day itself was a Holiday unlike Saturday, the drop was understandable. Interestingly, Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger had made a Day 2 business of about 14.55 crores at the Indian Box Office.
The movie will pick up today for sure, considering a Sunday and collect good moolahs with the hike in ticket prices at multiplexes all over India. However, the question still remains here is – “Will Chennai Express Reach The 100 Crore Club In 3 Days?”

Really Really feel proud of SRK. After all that’s been going on for last few years and especially this year when negativity surrounded his baby it was height! It was completely uncalled for and too harsh on the man. I am extremely happy that he has done what he could have done the best i.e broken records when nobody absolutely nobody including his fans like me expected him too! Hats off sir carry on entertaining us!

PS:- All the non-sense about this hurting south Indians and it being Himmatwala2 was never going to stop it as I had said it earlier in fact many south Indian people had loved Lungi Dance song m happy it has been proven right.

    @saurabh,

Unless an extreme makeover happened in the last few years in which I left India, Salman Khan cannot be the actor with the most fans in India. He has always had a loyal fan base which could not make London Dreams a hit and secretly rejoiced that Salman stole the show from Ajay Devgan. Not sure if its the biggest in India.

Big Boss Viewership, ratings of movies that premiere on TV, footfalls and Celebrex ratings are taken as proofs???

In that case, Katrina Kaif is a bigger star than Madhuri Dixit. And, since Sunny Leone is the most searched celebrity, I guess she has more fans than Salman Khan.

If I am proved wrong with this belief, I have lost touch with happenings in India.

“Indian import “Chennai Express” hit America with some serious strength this weekend, breaking the record for the biggest opening weekend ever for a Bollywood film Stateside.

The film — directed by Rohit Shetty and starring Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone — grossed $2,225,000 over the weekend from 196 theaters. That made for a huge $11,352 per-theater-average and a spot just outside the overall top 10, beating out the likes of “Pacific Rim” and “Red 2” — despite playing in a fraction of their screens.

Distributor UTV noted that the old record of $1,944,027 was held since 2010 by “My Name Is Khan.” “Chennai” also beat the 5-day Christmas holiday weekend opening of $2,149,227 for 2009’s “3 Idiots” which currently holds the record for the largest lifetime gross for a Bollywood film with a cume of $6,533,849. We should know by next weekend if “Chennai” can challenge that number, though so far it’s looking pretty good.”

Btw if its bo, then komal nd boi head himself said that if srk didn’t go for huge paid previews, then it would have collected around 35cr.. So if u compare bo of India then also.. It doesn’t matter to anybody that u buy this explanation or not.. Because the truth is the person who can go for paid preview will surely go for 1st day…

now 2nd thing, if u compare bo then u should compare world bo, means including overseas, because i m also saying sallu cant be defeated in terms of his popularity in India, similarly srk cant be if u compare world.. If u say u’ll compare the India bo only, then i’ll say srk is better than sallu in south comparing to their bo… So compare total collection…

but the mimp thing is how people changes perception wen its abt srk, nobody will say anything if aamir’s film won’t do well, Bt with srk, perception changes.. So srk lovers have to reply…
but in anyway, this hateness only defines that srk is still bigger superstar in subconscious mind of a hater…
so i guess u didn’t read my full comment, but now again i m asking ur reply, this time i m asking a full reply of my comment so that u answer me on every aspect of my comment,
btw i have read all the posts nd comment but couldn’t see any apart from 2-3 in sputnik review, nd in this thread… ND in other posts also i couldn’t remember wat u said abt issue of my concern, so plz reply..
nd i m nt fighting, just i m discussing the whole fi8 of who is no. 1 nd y, nd on which parameter… W8ing for reply, take time

  101. saurabh 11 years ago

@ baba above comment was for u

  102. saurabh 11 years ago

@phonic sir, sir i m a huge srk fan nd thing i only know, but now i must say that Salman is more popular in India.. A makeover happened.. Actually Salman has this unmatchable popularity in lower middle class nd in poor class(nt defaming but couldn’t find right word nd it is true too), nd now everybody has that much money that he/she can go for Salman movie, nd these people just love Salman’s presence irrespective of anything, nd big boss also helped him a lot to make his new fans, and also being human nd many stories of Salman’s helping nature.. (srk do a lot charity but he dnt promote it, coz of his belief in Islam, nd m nt saying Salman’s view on charity is wrong, even in this matter his view i find Lil better than srk) nd Salman also got wat he do best, unlike his old movies like u said London dreams, nd also people start loving more these mindless movies containing all masala.. Perhaps because of inclusion of lower middle class nd poor class as they have tension abt many things so they just want to enjoy, nd also these mental tension type of things increased in every indian, so they just want to enjoy.. Because of that even bodyguard earn more than ra one… Now from past couple of years srk started doing more experiment (mnik, ra one), nd also since increase of lower class people nd srk doing nri or more sophisticated roles, so these people couldn’t identify.. ND in these experiment also srk failed too unlike aamir, nd since srk haters also more in number than any other number nd ra one’s negative publicity srk haters used these opportunities efficiently, nd because of this negative publicity even some srk fans left him… Ra one was biggest point in this negative publicity, because some industry insiders didn’t like the over publicity done by srk, people came with many ways of negative publicity.. Like on fb, even komal nahata nd pritish nandi confirmed of this.. So all this reduced his publicity.. ND then jthj came with sos, so even if jthj had the potential of making some records, bo divided between sos too, nd sos also performed better in single screen… ND these years srk made headlines because of negative reasons which could be reason of frustration nd pressure of bo..
even people said ranbir is ahead of him compaing weekend nd life time collection,(even then it couldn’t break ra one 2nd day collection which ett also couldn’t break.. ND jthj has bo divide with sos, nd ra one had extreme negative publicity, don 2 ws nt marketed well or they wanted to market like this only, though movie was better than ra one..), so there are so many factors… Earlier also srk experimented but there was always a veer jara or oso, nd no threat from anyone except some silly pandits said akki ws threat.. So many factors reduced his popularity..
but mimp question is with some srk lover who are not strong enough to continue loving srk in low times,is what they want now, srk doing experiments with less bo, or srk doing full masala movie which may get good bo but no proud moment, because srk is not master of these two area, infact he can do both things good but he is not master.. So what they will like.. ND since srk can do both but not master, that makes him the star to look for, same as ranbir..
i guess i tried to come up with every factor..

  103. saurabh 11 years ago

@baba sir, i really thought u’ll give a genuine reply, but anyways, i think i have given a valid point of not comparing overseas records.. ND abt perception of people for srk..
ny wat have a good time, sry to make u feel bore

The weekend has seen all records smashed as the film will easily go over 90 crore nett for the weekend including paid previews. South India has seen just phenomenal collections while the rest of India is extraordinary. Every circuit has smashed all records for the weekend.
The film has held collections in roughly the same range over the first three days at very high levels which has never been done before Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani held up for 3 days at the 20 crore range but this has done it closer to the 30 crore nett range.

    Monday 12th August 2013 10.30 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Chennai Express has smashed all records by grossing 92 crore nett over the weekend including paid previews. The three day figure is around 24-25 crore nett higher than anything before which is phenomenal. Only Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has grossed over 60 crore before in three days.

Every circuit in India has set a new record for the first weekend. The South Indian circuits have just crushed all records with collections at places twice as high as other record breaking films be it Ek Tha tiger or yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

Eid falling perfectly on the right day has helped the film to put up an unbelievable figure. Eid and the next two days are always huge for business and for Chennai Express these three days fell in the Fri-Sun period which is a huge bonus.

Simply outstanding. I bet even SRK’s fans never expected it cross 55 cr. Even myself I said that it will cross 55 cr. 86 cr. in 3 days is fabulous. At least 50 cr. from overseas and we will have more than 140 cr. worldwide collection by weekend. Distributors ki nikal padi.

  109. mate 11 years ago

So According to BOI, Sunday collection is 30.25 cr approx. Not bad. Still 86 cr in 3 days is a huge figure. Now there is a difference of 8.42 cr between BOI and Taran (92 cr and 100.42 cr).

Chennai Express has held very strongly on Monday and may set a new record for business on Monday when it has not fallen on a holiday. The highest collection for a Monday is Ek Tha Tiger with 19 crore nett approx but it was a holiday for Bassi Eid while the highest non holiday Monday is Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani at 12.75 crore nett.

The Monday collections of Chennai Express look set to challenge the Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani figure. There will be a fall from the Friday figures as that was a national holiday but the collection itself for Monday will be huge and amongst the top three collections for a Monday be it holiday or non holiday Monday.

‘Chennai Express’ ticket prices won’t increase
Nitisha Kashyap, TNN Aug 8, 2013, 12.00AM IST
August sees some big-ticket releases starting from ‘Chennai Express’. While ticket prices in Mumbai are set to increase by 40% because of the Eid weekend and other holidays, in Delhi, prices are not changing. Hooray!
Movie releases during Eid, Diwali and Christmas are almost always locked by big-ticket blockbusters. Movie-goers too, are used to a hike in ticket prices, because of the festive season and because mostly, the films are awaited releases of a big star. However, this Eid – which is also an extended weekend – ticket prices in Delhi are not increasing, or increasing by only 5-10%.
Eid, which is on August 9, brings a series of big films. Chennai Express releases on Eid, which will be followed by Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara, Madras Cafe and Satyagraha later this month. It’s a big month in terms of movie releases, but ticket prices are set to remain unchanged.
    Not increasing prices
While in Mumbai, ticket prices are set to increase by as much as 40% on weekdays and 20% on weekends, Delhi and NCR will have very minimal or no change in rates. Anant Verma, business head, DT Cinemas, tells us, “We are not increasing the rates on Eid. All prices will remain as they are. We stick to the norms of the Delhi Licensing Department, which permits us to increase prices twice a year. We raised prices recently, for Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, but that too by 7-10%. So, we’ll not increase prices now.”
DT Cinemas’ branch in Gurgaon doesn’t come under the Delhi Licensing Department, but prices there too, will not change. “We can increase prices in Gurgaon, but as company policy, we aren’t doing so,” says Verma. The pricing in PVR will also be normal, says Rahul Singh, senior VP, Operations, PVR LTD. “Eid is on Friday and Chennai Express is the only film releasing that weekend. People will be eagerly waiting for it. Our pricing in Delhi and NCR will be normal,” he says, “We get the rates approved in the beginning of the year, which are different for different films. For a blockbuster, rates are different, and different for a low-budget film. If a film is three hours long, its rate is different. We are considering Chennai Express a blockbuster, so its tickets will be priced like that. It could start from 100 for weekdays, and 300-350 for weekends.”
Similarly, Ashish Saxena, head, Operations, Big Cinemas, says, “We are not increasing prices, but the pricing will be that of a blockbuster.”
    Minimal hike in prices
Since in Delhi, ticket pricing is monitored by the Licensing Department, “We have very little scope to increase prices,” says Vishal Anand, senior VP, Operations, Fun Cinemas, “There is a slot, and whatever increase happens, happens within the slot. It’s not a free market like MP or Maharashtra, where ticket prices can be increased by as much as you want. This month has festivals (Eid, Rakhi, Bhai Dooj), a national holiday, and extended weekends, and to top all that, big stars’ films are releasing. Prices are hiked for big releases. If we look at past records, Eid is a very strong period. And with the release of four big movies, we are hoping August to be a big month. So, the ticket prices will see a variation, but there’ll be a negligible increase – not more than 5%. Ticket price 10 se 15 ho jayega.”
    Yes, no, maybe: 5-10%hike
Some cinemas are still not sure if they’ll raise prices. Yogesh Raizada, corporate head, Wave Cinemas, says, “June and July were dull in terms of releases. This month is going to be a great month for us. Pricing depends on how big the film is. Pehle log Shah Rukh ya Amitabh ki movie ke liye black mein 500 tak dete thay. Paying capacity of the consumer is directly proportional to the star cast. We’ll decide our rates depending on the request of distributors, and what the competition’s prices are. But it’s not going to be more than a 5-10% increase.”
Munish Sharma, GM, Marketing, Satyam, says, “As of now, we are not raising prices. But if there’ll be an increase, it’ll be as per industry norms.” RK Mehrotra, GM, Delite, says, “Distributors have requested us to raise ticket prices. Last time, this request for Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani was not approved. So, this time, we may increase rates.”
    How do price slots work?
Ticket prices in Delhi are monitored as in a union territory. In the beginning of the year, all cinema halls have to apply for slots, which are five different prices that cinema halls can apply anytime the whole year. These slots have to be approved by the Delhi Licensing Department, and every hall has different slots.
For example, for a blockbuster, a cinema hall applies for 300 as the ticket rate; for a low-budget film, `150; and for a long movie, 250. So, whenever a movie is released, its ticket price is decided accordingly.
The upgradation of rates is allowed twice a year. Meaning, if one wants to hike a ticket from 300 to 320, it can be done only twice a year. Also, halls have to give a reason for the upgrade, common reasons being inflation, food prices, electricity bills and more manpower.

watch IBN 7, Komal Nahta quoted 100.42 cr figure..lol
That’s not a problem with Komal, it happens with every trade anaylyst. Once they claim something before the release, they make it an issue of ego. BOI did the same thing, before the release of CE they claim first day record will not be broken but weekend will definitely be. And then manipulation with the collection starts. The only difference between BOI and others is that BOI correct themselves latter but others don’t.

Giving such comments and still you expect SRK fans not to dislike the songs/videos of non-srk starrer. 😛
Anyway I never dislike videos of other stars without any reason. I always give credit where it’s due. You can read one of my comments above, where I praised Aamir khan cameo and said he is the real screen stealer in CE inspite of SRK presence. 😉

Take it easy dude. If u didnt get anyone to blast against…i was all along positive for CE.

Its a fantastic success for CE – but dont blast me for ur Khujli if u didnt find anyone.

    Take care and enjoy!

My comment about Dollar and Rupee rate conversion is matter of fact. Take it in right spirit.

  123. shan 11 years ago

I have to admit – after the first trailer of Chennai Express, I couldnt believe SRK was bringing us a cheap looking, unfunny, “masala” movie. The music album did nothing to improve my expectations. But I am surprised at the humongous response to CE! Looks like the SRK+Rohit Shetty+Eid combo has indeed done the trick. I believe it is the combo and not just SRK pull, otherwise we would have seen similar numbers at time of Ra.One and Don2 as well. It is great to see records being smashed by a distance – been a while since that happened 🙂 I havent watched the movie yet (frankly, have been unable to motivate myself seeing Shahrukh ham so much in the trailer) but happy that the movie is making so much so fast. The BO bar has been raised – it is time for others, especially Aamir, Hrithik and Salman to match up with their upcoming biggies. Now that the BO monkey is off SRK’s back, it will be great to see him in a nice performance oriented movie like Chak De. Hope he keeps delaying Happy New Year and does a nice Shimit Amin/Ashutosh Gowariker/Raju Hirani movie! 🙂

Hmm, Movie dropped 70% in Gurgaon (12.7 lakhs against 43 Lakhs) and 52% in Kanpur (10.61 Lakhs against 22 Lakhs) from Sunday figures.

    Chennai Express Has Strong Monday
    Tuesday 13th August 2013 10.30 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Chennai Express collected around 12 crore nett on Monday taking its business to 104 crore nett. It is crossed 100 crore nett in four days plus paid previews. The collections on Monday were rock steady in Muslim centres as they normally are for a few days post Eid while others did show a noticeable drop. It was the third highest Monday ever after Ek Tha Tiger and Yeh Jawaani Hai Dewani.
But with Muslim dominated areas being down just 50% from that huge Friday it came out with a strong Monday. There will be another noticeable drop on Tuesday as collections come down in Muslim dominated areas but Thursday is national holiday so that will be up and it will also help on Wednesday evening.
The film is probably looking at a record breaking first week of around 140 crore nett. Ek That Tiger last year in Eid week collected 143 crore nett in nine days and 128 crore in 7 days.

considering the film had 20+cr collections on the weekends, it is obvious to have such a fall on monday…most of the film had already watched it on the weekends due to the eid holidays…those who dint, watched on weekdays and some on repeat mode…

wednesday and thursday vl again see a jump in its collections..with the second weekend again, it vl add a couple of crores more…..first week is looking for a 140-150 crores.. it vl need just another 50-52 crores more to break lyftym collection of 3I… and i have the gut feeling dat it vl definitely smash the record…

and @mate as u know OUATIMD is hardly any competition to CE… IN FACT IT IS VICE VERSA..!!!

    @saurabh,

I never asked about negativity around SRK in comparison with Salman.

I have heard of the ‘heart of Gold’ analogy everyone attributes to Salman. Its always been the case. Nothing new in there. What is new, is that journalist need to attribute this fresh miles of mileage that Salman got out of ‘Wanted’ into something. Hence, the current ‘Bhai’ worship.

Wrt to SRK, all of his recent films have crawled up to 100 crores, after garnering a decent opening. It may have appeared lagging when compared to Salman’s films that rocketed its way to 100 crores. The conclusion in the end is that SRK is fading star.

The fact of it, he simply stagnated, audience expected ‘much more’ from him, or simply its the wrong genre to make blockbuster out of. IMO, films should either be super loved or belong to a particular hot selling genre to become a blockbuster, SRK’s recent films (before CE) belonged to neither.

I believe SRK’s career stagnation was due to bad choices rather than losing interest in him. Of course, its definitely affecting him and the end result is audience disliking. Negativity is nothing new. I mean, SRK always had haters. People have hated him for the baggage of irksome mannerisms, for his uncoventional looks and goat voice, or simply because of a hunch/vibe as per which he is supposed to be haughty and arrogant. Even in 2002, rediff voted him as worst actor for Devdas as per popular choice. It never was big enough to affect BO. Even today. So I don’t think its because of haters. Controversies or personal stuff have very little bearing on box office pull.

Chennai Express Is Highest Shahrukh Khan Grosser In Five Days
    Wednesday 14th August 2013 16.30 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Chennai Express has become the highest grossing Shahrukh Khan starrer in just five days as it beat the business of Ra.One. Chennai Express has grossed 115 crore nett approx after five days including paid previews. The film was steady on Tuesday in circuits which had the larger fall on Monday.
The collections on Wednesday will also be very good as the film will get a boost in the evening due to the next day being a national holiday.
Thursday will be interesting because if Chennai Express had kept all the same shows it had through the week it would have showed a 40-50% jump. It will still retain a large chunk of its shows but will be on less screenings than in the first six days of release due to release of Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobara.

  149. sauravjha 11 years ago

I wonder if SRK and Chennai Express have decided to troll people like never before! Just when people started saying after Friday that SAT will be lower film is not good n blah blah it comes out n collect 28 crores! Just when they think it’ll definitely crash on weekdays it just doesn’t come down below 11 ! I mean so much for “hawa nikalna” and question mark over its “holding well or not” ! I would say just remember the time before the release when everyone said end of masala is already there after HIMMATWALA, the king of masses and masala movie Salman Khan couldn’t repeat the success of Dabangg with Dabangg 2, and that SRK is in his worst phase and possibly can’t give hits in all genre especially in comedy+action. So come on show some grace and accept that SRK has proved u wrong and proved u wrong big time! Rest records to bante hi rahenge.

otherwise generally haters have very negative pre notions abt him, so they will comment negatively abt a srk movie even without watching it, they will hate kkr too.. They will always come with a lame excuse..
i guess srk is the only one bollywood actor who has lovers as well as haters more in numbers..

Chennai Express collections jumped 10% on Wednesday due to strong evening collections at multiplexes as today is a national holiday. The collections so far are 126 crore nett and the film will top 140 crore nett for the week.

Once there was talk of Akshay and Srk doing film together when Salman and Aamir’s friendship was talk of the town. Now what happened to those rumours? Feels sad for Akshay but it was his inability to stop pursuing outimd’s makers from the shift of its release made this film get squeezed. I hope everyone learns from Ajay’s stand last year during Diwali. He not only fought with Srk’s stardom and influence but also against mighty Chopra’s Monopoly as Mr. Thomas Jeffereson quotes “One man with courage is a majority”.

Chennai Express has collected Rs 156.71 crore in its first week at the box office, to become the first Hindi film ever to cross the 150 crore mark in one week (7 days including paid previews). The previous best first week collection record of Rs 137.15 crore, was held by Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger, which has been trounced!

Like one of the songs in the film, Chennai Express has done well from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. A couple of circuits that didn’t initially open to record breaking numbers put up excellent figures towards the end of the first week. The film was also rock-steady during the weekdays, and ended the week with second highest collections on Independence Day – the previous best was the opening day of Ek Tha Tiger.
    Chennai Express Box office

    Chennai Express Box office

CE is Shahrukh Khan’s first universal hit since Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008) and also his biggest grosser ever. In just 7 days, the film has also gone past some of Bollywood’s biggest blockbusters like Rowdy Rathore, Bodyguard and Dabangg.

Chennai Express First Week Collections and Records – Day wise

Paid Previews – 6.75 crore (broke the record by a huge margin)

    Verdict: BLOCKBUSTER

A special mention for the marketing team behind Chennai Express, who have gone all out to promote the Rohit Shetty entertainer even after its theatrical release last week. SRK too has been tirelessly promoting his film all over, right from visiting theatres across Mumbai (including the iconic Maratha Mandir) to interacting with fans on social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook.

For those associated with the film, there is absolutely nothing that is more satisfying than box office success, because at the end of the day success at the ticket windows means the film has been liked and well-appreciated. Congratulations to Rohit Shetty, Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and the entire team behind the blockbuster success of Chennai Express. Truly well deserved.

    Champion express
‘All my films stem from a personal desire to make myself happy,’ says SHAH RUKH KHAN, in the afterglow of chennai express

He looks relaxed. A smile plays on his lips, the swagger is a lot more confident and the eyes seem to twinkle a little bit more. Shah Rukh Khan was a happy man when t2 met him at Delhi’s Hotel Crowne Plaza on a cloudy Tuesday afternoon. Rs 100cr-plus happy. Over the next 40 minutes and in between numerous cups of strong black coffee, SRK spoke Chennai Express, crores and critics.
There’s been a general opinion that with Chennai Express Shah Rukh Khan has tried to reorganise himself as an actor…
There’s never been an attempt to reorganise as an actor. I just do the films I like… that appeal to my heart. Yesterday I was reading something on the Internet… I normally don’t read stuff written about myself apart from when I am feeling very pompous and want to bring myself down a peg or two (smiles). This article said: ‘Despite his last four films having made an ‘x’ amount of money, SRK is back to being the king with Chennai Express. I don’t agree with this at all. The simplest way of looking at my work is that I do the films that excite me enough to want to be with them for one year.
From the outside if anyone wants to look at my life, everything’s been done over the last 22 years. I have done 55 really wonderful films… some fantastic, some not so fantastic box-office wise and appreciation wise. All kinds of awards, national or international, I have got. The only thing that I want now as an actor, a producer and then as a filmmaker sometime in the future, is that I want my children to be very proud of my work. That’s my only criterion. I have always said this: never work for posterity or prosperity. Money no longer matters.
I don’t have any strategy… I don’t sit down with any PR, any planner, any manager, any producer, any director. Actresses who work with me for the first time… Katrina (Kaif), Priyanka (Chopra)… Deepika (Padukone) who worked with me after a long time… are shocked that I don’t use the phone at all… I am not planning. I hear a story and I like it a lot. Sometimes what I like is liked by a billion, sometimes not.
Chennai Express, I knew, was a popular format and so we released it on a holiday as it had elements that would appeal to everyone in most age groups. Like Farah’s (Khan) film (Happy New Year) that will come next Diwali, Inshaallah… you know it’s a festive period and it should be a fun, happy film.
Some people ask me if Chennai Express has been the riskiest film of my career. I feel that Ra.One was a bigger risk and so was Chak De! (India) and Paheli. But I never thought of them as risks… I felt like doing them. Just like I felt like doing Chennai Express, Jab Tak Hai Jaan or Don. My Name Is Khan was an even bigger risk… 60 per cent of it was in English, shot in America and surprising for most people that Karan Johar, Shah Rukh and Kajol are not making a love story. Take a film like Ra.One that has been the most expensive film anyone could make. The theme of the film was probably the 10th most discussed topic by 0.01 per cent of the Indian population! (Smiles) Comics don’t sell here. People are wary of a superhero in tights. But I wanted to make it for my children who watch Iron Man and Superman and love those films… I wanted to make it to set up my VFX studio. I told my wife (Gauri) one morning that I wanted to make this film, but it could lose money and I wanted to make it to set up the VFX. She was like: ‘I think you deserve to. You’ve worked so hard… have a good shopping spree.’ All my films stem from a personal desire to make myself happy.
Despite the crores, reviews have been scathing… probably the worst you have received in your 22-year-old career.
I think it’s very stupid to measure different kind of cinema on the same platform. Are you going to critically comment on the social relevance of a film like Iron Man? If I were to review it, I would have started criticising Iron Man right from the beginning… like how can a man with an iron heart fly around? How can he live on a cliff and have these issues? Why is he a multi-millionaire? I mean, there are so many things… Tony Stark is a completely wrong character. But we all enjoy the films… they earn millions at the box office and critics appreciate them too. Some critics come in with a preconceived idea of how a film should be. I feel you should just go and enjoy the film first.
But given how well-spoken and well-read you are off screen, don’t you think people expect the same out of your cinema?
I want to tell people that you need to laugh at yourself. I am well-read, well-educated and well-informed. I am a good thinker also… in my own space. I have a lot of thoughts, I have good thoughts. I read all the good literature, I read poems, I watch films from around the world. I get the tapes when they are submitted for Oscars… I ask my friends to send them. I think, intellectualism the simpler you make it, the better it is.
I’ll tell you honestly, it’s more difficult and more creative to make a film like Chennai Express. In Ra.One, I was a superhero and I could run over cars. In Chennai Express, I wasn’t a superhero and you can’t imagine how much I had to convince myself that a car could fly over my head! Because here you are dealing with the implausible, it requires far more work to convince yourself as well as the audience. I do try to create a balance… when people wanted to see a fun, clean film… I did Chennai Express. At this point, I have a few ideas in my head that cannot be measured commerce-wise on the same parameters as Chennai Express. And I want to make a point with that. I am now hoping to do what I guess people will believe is a more intellectual film. (Smiles)
You’ve also been saying that you are being deliberately targeted by the media. Why do you feel that?
See, some sections of the media are now going on and on and it’s starting to become obvious that there is an agenda somewhere. Sex determination and surrogacy are very serious issues and I don’t appreciate how some people try to make it un-serious. I really don’t have a problem with tabloids and websites that criticise my clothes or my shoes…. Like this magazine wrote about how my designer got angry because I repeated the same pair of shoes in successive events (laughs). But there are serious issues that need some respect. I can’t dissociate myself from media because I am media. If a tabloid writes about how I got out of a car with a girl, I won’t complain to them because that’s their world. I know it’s fun and a little tongue-in-cheek and we have to accept each other. But some lines have to be drawn sometimes. Like talking about the sex determination of my child (AbRam) without knowing the details is not humane.
Is it true that you are looking at Chennai Express as the fund to make a series of smaller films now?
Yes, that’s true. For example, if I was to back a film, for say Rs 30 crore, it makes more sense for me to make a film like Chennai Express, earn a lot of money and then put it into a small-budget, quality film. So, in a way, Chennai Express becomes the bank… the rider film for other productions. Mashaallah, this is fantastic for us because Chennai Express is doing very well. So between this and Happy New Year, I will make smaller films… now I have the confidence to do that. What I make now will be interesting cinema.
You promoted Chennai Express far more than any film you have ever done…
I don’t think I did much more than what I do for my other films. But yes, the scope and theme of this film was such that I could go on various platforms and promote it. I could go to a game show, a girlie show, a song-and-dance show, a family show and even a comedy show and talk about the film. It’s a cabaret… a variety kind of film where you have doses of everything. You can’t do the same with Chak De! or My Name Is Khan or Don. The one thing for sure is that the platforms on which I promote my film have to be suitable. After Ra.One, Red Chillies changed the notion of how one should associate a film with products. I think we had 32 tie-ups for Ra.One, like how it’s done in the West. For Chennai Express, after the music release, we decided to do this extensive promotion across all platforms for three days… all print, all television, all websites, all radio. We then went quiet till the trailer came out and let people soak it in. And then, we did the same publicity blitz, but this time city-wise. And it paid off (smiles).
You’ve also rejected the idea of a sequel to Chennai Express. Isn’t there the temptation to cash in on a successful franchise?
No, I don’t think a sequel to Chennai Express is possible because then you would have to pick two different languages and regions to set up a clash. Don is the only franchise I really like… it’s the only franchise in the world where the bad guy is winning each time and people are rooting for him. It’s fantastic… I would love to do it again. But Farhan’s (Akhtar, the director of the Don films) taking time to plan Don 3. He is trying to make time for it… because it’s a film so close to his heart, he wants to write the dialogues, he wants to do everything.

Chennai Express Is Blockbuster Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobara Fails
    Saturday 17th Auguat 2013 09.00 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobara had good start on Thursday in tems of occupancies. This was due to it being a holiday and the film having a limited release which allowed it go houseful at many places. The film went wide on Friday and recorded average occupancies and collections were lower at many palces despite extra screenings. The film will struggle at the box office.

Chennai Express set new benchmarks as it grossed around 145 crore nett in week one. The film dropped on Friday as compare to what it did in week one though the collection on Friday is pretty good and will be amongst the top five second Friday’s of all time. Looking at the likley second week trends the film will emerge the biggest or second biggest domestic grosser of all time. BLOCKBUSTER

Chennai Express Has Solid Start To Second Week
    Saturday 17th August 2013 11.30 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Chennai Express had a solid start to its second week as it grossed around 5.50 crore nett on Friday. The drop is there as the business was huge in the first week but a 5.50 crore nett figure on the second Friday is very good if compared with what other big films have done on their second Fridays.
The film even managed to beat the business of Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobara in some circuits despite it being in its second week week and Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobara having its second day.
The figures were higher for Chennai Express in West Bengal, Nizam/Andhra, Mysore and Tamil Nadu/Kerala. Chennai Express should show solid growth on Saturday and Sunday and will easily go over 20 crore nett for the weekend.

In Mysore it collected 50 lakhs nett more than Once Upon A Time In Mumbao Dobaara despite being in its 9th day against the 3rd day of Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara.
The film will beat the second week figures of last year’s Eid release Ek Tha Tiger but will be short of this year’s other major grosser Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

It is unbelievable how much Chennai Express has grossed! Its a clean blockbuster for SRK after long. Good to see him strike gold at BO once again, although how much this will do for his filmography and future career, cant say. Not that it matters – SRK has a pretty decent filmography so far and will surely get some good character roles once he decides to hang-up the Rahul boots. Whether he will do them or not is another thing. 🙂

Still havent got the courage to watch the movie though, after hearing negative reports from everyone who has seen it. Havent heard a single positive review from any of my friends. Will watch this one when it becomes available on Netflix I guess.

  195. Bored 11 years ago

@Shan – If you can watch CE without any colored glasses u are bound to enjoy it, even if u dont want to. Pure romcom fans or pure masala fans may feel dissatisfied – but the most generic bollywood audience are of neither extremes. They largely want entertainment and fun – that is exactly what CE delivers.

I dont think it is time for SRK to start doing character roles yet. Maybe another 4-5 years later. He is on the right track – Farah has a spoofy nature and in HNY she will have SRK as the senior ringmaster taking a bunch of ‘youngsters’ for a ride … it can be the perfect followup to CE – unless Farah screws it up badly.

And then there is likely to be another Rohit Shetty followup soon after. Shetty has now tasted blood and he knows he cant get this kind of BO with Devgn – just like Farah is bound to give her best to HNY since its her only ticket for a comeback after something as embarrassing as TMK..

Chennai Express Heads For ALL TIME RECORD Distributor Share
    Tuesday 20th August 2013 09.30 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Chennai Express is set to collect the highest distributor share ever and be the second film to go over the 100 crore share mark. Last year Ek That Tiger had a huge distributor share of around 107 crore and Chennai Express is sure to beat that and go past the 110 crore mark.
The film is holding strong in the second week and collections will go over 35 crore nett and the 98 crore distributor share of Three Idiots which was second to Ek Tha Tiger in terms of share has already been crossed by Chennai Express.
The record nett collections of Three Idiots is more of a stiffer task and although Chennai Express can get there it will be very close run thing. At the moment Chennai Express is looking at range a of 195-205 crore nett depending on what unfolds over the next two weeks.

Is Shahrukh Khan The Number One Star After Chennai Express?
    Tuesday 20th August 2012 09.00 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

    Q. Can Phata Poster Nikla Hero be the comeback of Shahid Kapoor?
    A. It can if the content is good. The opening numbers should be best for a Shahid Kapoor starrer but mainly because his last release was over a year back and business is higher today but its unlikely to be that 10 crore plus opener so will depend on word of mouth.
    S. Yadav

    Q. Is Shahrukh Khan the number one star after Chennai Express?
    A. Worldwide there is no doubt he is number one. In India the issue was pretty clear cut before Chennai Express with Salman Khan leading but now it is debateable. Basically it seems to depend on the better release dates, Salman Khan got excellent release dates with Bodyguard and Ek Tha Tiger and this year Shahrukh Khan got it with Chennai Express.
    M. Qazir

    Q. Has the business of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag crossed Barfi?
    A. Nett collections have but gross collections have not.
    R. Malhotra

    Q. Are there not enough screens in India because there is so much competition for screens?
    A. There are more than enough screens and its only when two big films release together or a week apart that problems occur and even that has a lot do with the short life span of a films today and everybody wants the maximum and best screens in their first week. Most of the year there are low occupancies and more screens will mean they get even lower. The need for extra screens will be if there are two releases a month that can do 150 crore nett but we struggle to get one film a month that can even do 100 crore nett.

Chennai Express Grosses 186 Crore In Two Weeks

    Friday 23rd August 2013 10.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Chennai Express has grossed around 186 crore nett as it grossed 40 crore nett approx in its second week which is an excellent total for week two especially considering the huge first week total. The film has got a huge advantage of holidays in its run be it for Eid, Independence Day or Raksha Bandhan and all this in the first two weeks when business is at highest levels.

Chennai Express in two weeks has collected what Ek Tha Tiger did in its entire run last year and now will aim at Three Idiots all time record of 200 crore nett plus. The film is easily the biggest hit of the year with the highest distributor share of all time of 110 crore in just two weeks.

The film should get to the 200 crore nett mark and cross 3 Idiots but it is the third week that will decide does it just crawl there or surpasses comfortably.

Not sure but heard that third Saturday’s BO collection << third Friday BO collection. According to boi collection(186 cr) now it is difficult to break 3I record. Uffff Poor fans ! ! !

now it seems only D3 can break 3I's bo record. 😉

only amir can break (his)amir's record. 🙂

its 4.3m$ for CE at the end of second week ( taran had said less in his yesterday tweet )
    https://boxofficemojo.com/weekly/chart/?yr=2013&wk=33&p=.htm

it will be difficult to touch 5m$ but 4.8 will be very good too

it will be the highest earner for its makers ( who will have their money in indian rupee )

3idiots made 29.8 crore , CE will cross 30 crore inshallah

  211. shezad 11 years ago

mate bahi and other too, are you more surprised with CE india total or its overseas total

both are way behyond what i expected from this film , even after its record breaking week end

another great thing is that , in all probability it will be the first film to reach 400 cr ( producer number )
    aprox 106-110 cr overseas 215-220 ( 285-292 cr gross )
in worst case CE will beat 3 idiots 392cr

  212. mate 11 years ago

ChennaiExpress take a jump of only 70% on Saturday. Uff poor SRK fans. 😛

BOM estimate for the week end
    https://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2013&wknd=34&p=.htm
    is 377 000$

from what i chek its only behind 3 idiots 3rd week end

and now the total after 3rd week end is 4.7m$

    5m$ is doable now

For the first time BOI is underplaying Srk’s film by not declaring it as an ATBB. It will break all the existing records if it has not until now before it ends its run and should be declared as ATBB. Why was Dabangg declared as ATBB or KKHH or RH then why not CE? After all it will turn out to be the biggest film so far.

    • shezad 11 years ago

      their statement is not correct

they said that CE is not an atbb bcz its not as big hit as hakhk or gadar or 3 iditos, but are ghajini or dabaang as big as these 3 films? no

Replacing Kareena/Priyanka/Katrina/Deepika with one another doesnt make much difference in these biggies. And definitely not as much as our Narayan here believes … i think he is the greatest trade pundit out there. I have started to follow him now.

I dont know abt CE (haven’t seen it) But YJHD definitely belonged to Deepika as much as Ranbir.

Probably yes, but owning a movie doesnt necessarily mean he/she is attracting the butts to fill up the theater seats. IF not so, then Ram Leela will do 150 cr i guess.

    • Reddemon 11 years ago

Dpad did had a cosiderable pull in YJHD (may be even CE). Check KRK’s RT polls where Dpad lead Ranbir. Agree that its a very small sample size but still gives an idea.

When it comes to a female actor’s pull, love the way all these excuses come up.

I wudnt put Deepika in the same league as Madhuri, not yet.
Lets first see if Deepika can by herself make a movie hit. Till now she has been working with saif, saif+john, ranbir, srk and the collections have been proportionate to the male star values.
Its not the problem with the trade that the actresses are devalued – its a problem with the audience.

Chennai Express Hits 200 Crore In Three Weeks

    Friday 30th August 2013 10.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Chennai Express hit the 200 crore nett mark at the end of its third week as it grossed around 16 crore nett in its third week. The three week total for the film is around 200.75 crore nett and will become the highest grossing film ever over the weekend.

Considering the huge business the film had done over the first week, a 16 crore return in week three is fantastic as it is amongst the top five highest third week collections which include films that did not start with huge collections like Barfi and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

The film is looking to finish with a lifetime total in the range of 206-208 crore nett. An improvement of 20 crore nett from last years Eid release Ek Tha Tiger.

good observation and answer mate… ce 200 cr net collections is a big tight slap on srk’s detractors who were blabbering nonsense abt him…

and above from dat they start comparing him with chhote mote actors… let us pledge not to react to their nonsensical comments when srk is compared with other actors.. if at all anything over the top is said, one single heavy comment is enough to stop their blabbering… this way, we can maintain the dignity and position of srk…

Satyagraha Average Opening Chennai Express Hits 200 Crore

Satyagraha opened to an average response of around 40%. The opening was average in most circuits with a couple of circuits being low. The key for the film is Saturday growth for a decent weekend but the reports are mixed for the film.
Madras Cafe had a good trend over the weekend but the weekdays were not so impressive even though it had a holiday. The film has seen big fall on day eight. The first week collections were around 32.50 crore nett. The film has flattered to deceive and will be an average at best.
Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobara dropped in its second week as it collected 7 crore nett taking its two week total to 58 crore nett. FLOP
Chennai Express hit the 200 crore nett mark after three weeks as it collected 16 crore nett in week three. Three idiots the other film to cross 200 crore nett hit the mark in 8 weeks. BLOCKBUSTER.

one would expect boi, a site notorious for its srk-nexus, to go totally orgasmic at this moment as ce is on is way to overhaul 3i total. but neither have the commentaries been even remotely close to the ghajini/dabang/3i ones nor has the verdict been atbb. 200 cr is probbaly not an extraordinary achievement today,as of 2013.that is what i conlude from the boi comentary so far.

      • Author
        sputnik 11 years ago

Yes its surprising that BOI is not orgasmic over a movie beating 3I’s collections and becoming the highest grosser ever. May be they are not being paid by the SRK camp 🙂

200 Cr is still a extraordinary achievement today since it is the first movie to cross that since 3I. ETT and YJHD failed to cross 200 cr.

And the verdict should be ATBB because it is the highest grosser ever. If CE is not a ATBB then I don’t understand how DDLJ (9cr less), RH (21 Cr less) and KKHH (24Cr less after 5 years) which all did less than HAHK can be ATBBs. How can Gadar which does only 6 Cr more than HAHK after 7 years be ATBB? How can Dabangg be a ATBB after doing 60 Cr less than 3I a year after that? How can Ghajini be a ATBB if its record was bettered by 85 Cr within a year?

        • Baba 11 years ago

“ETT and YJHD failed to cross 200 cr.”

ett came very close and it was an year ago.yjhd was never expected to make even 150 cr, let alone close to 200. it performed well above expectations.and the verdicts for both are BB as well.

“And the verdict should be ATBB because it is the highest grosser ever”
this is never the criteria to give verdicts. else both dhoom 2 and oso wud hv had atbb verdicts.i dont agree on ghajini and dabang being atbb as well

          • Author
            sputnik 11 years ago

ETT was 186 I think according to BOI and so that’s 14 Cr less than 200. YJHD was also in 180s but less than ETT I think. CE was not expected to cross 150 either but it has done well to cross 200cr.

Anyways this is just a term BOI invented and their verdicts have been ATBB for movies which did less than other previously released movies. If its highest grosser then at least Dhoom 2 should be ATBB.

          • Baba 11 years ago
